The heroines of Women’s Liberation are<br />

not widely recognised. The contributions<br />

of the Pankhursts and Germaine Greer<br />

made little difference. Olympe de Gouges<br />

and Mary Wollstonecraft broke the ice. A<br />

man, John Stuart Mill, provided the theory,<br />

Annie Besant and Marie Stopes, the<br />

means.<br />

FROM THE 1920s<br />

Bix Beiderbecke died at 28 in New York in<br />

1931. His accomplishments are preserved<br />

on some 200 recordings as jazz cornettist<br />

or pianist as well as the scores of a<br />

small number of transcribed piano pieces.<br />

Beiderbecke is a cult figure to jazz aficionados.<br />
