WELCOME FROM PENNWELL CORPORATION
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to this preliminary guide to this year’s POWER-GEN Asia conference & exhibition. I hope it will whet your appetite to what is
in store when the region’s power industry meets 2-4 October in Bangkok.
Although it is unusual for POWER-GEN Asia to remain in one location for two consecutive years, there is no better country than
Thailand to do so, given its strong economy and the support the event enjoys from the local power industry. Once again, we can
promise you the most comprehensive and valuable conference, exhibition and networking event serving the electricity generation
industry. By co-locating with Renewable Energy World Asia, the event is easily the largest and most significant gathering of power
industry professionals in South East Asia.
POWER-GEN Asia 2013 enjoys the full support of key industry related organisations in Thailand, including the Ministry of Energy’s
Department of Alternative Energy and Efficiency, The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the Metropolitan Electricity
Authority, the Provincial Electricity Authority as well as Thailand’s Convention & Exhibition Bureau. These host organisations will help
ensure you have a truly worthwhile experience at POWER-GEN Asia 2013.
Economies across South East Asia continue to exhibit strong growth rates on the back of buoyant domestic demand. Malaysia’s GDP
grew last year by 6.4 per cent while Thailand reported growth of 6.1 per cent in 2012. Growing economies create increased demand
for electricity from both industry and domestic consumers with Thailand, for example, expecting to see investment of over $50 billion
in its electricity sector in the next few years. A recent study predicts Thai energy demand to double in the next 25 years.
Despite the investment drive, Thailand is likely to remain a net energy importer for quite a few more years and its access to fuel sources
remains a key issue, as does its policy of growing the alternative energy sector from 9.8 per cent of the energy mix to 25 per cent
by 2021. Elsewhere in the region new opportunities are emerging as more attractive policy frameworks are developed in countries
including Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines and the Advisory Board for POWER-GEN Asia has been keen to reflect this in the
content presented at this year’s event.
With a growing amount of investment being made in renewable energy technologies, the joint POWER-GEN Asia and Renewable
Energy World Asia event creates a joint forum addressing all the key issues across the entire spectrum of the power generation
industry.
POWER-GEN Asia is about taking time out to meet your industry face-to-face, to discuss the issues of the day, become acquainted with
new technologies and techniques and build the business networks that will open doors to new commercial and personal opportunities.
The three days of POWER-GEN Asia offers all this through its comprehensive strategic and technical conference sessions, its vast
exhibition floor and its various networking events.
This Pre-Show Guide contains the entire conference programme for POWER-GEN Asia plus the summary grid for the Renewable
Energy World Asia conference, with all sessions across the six tracks open to registered delegates from both events. Any additions or
modifications to the programme will be reflected on the respective websites:
www.powergenasia.com
www.renewableenergyworld-asia.com
You will also find details of the many other activities that form part of POWER-GEN Asia such as the technical tours and networking
events, plus a list of the exhibitors you can meet in Bangkok. Most importantly, you can find out all the ways to register to attend
POWER-GEN Asia on page 3 and how you can take advantage of the Early Bird discounts on offer.
The power industry across Asia is undergoing considerable change, occurring at the same time as an increase in demand that will
require new infrastructure to be built. Those individuals and organisations embracing the change, developing and adopting new
technologies and implementing visionary business strategies, will emerge as the winners. Make sure you are in the forefront of this
change by joining us in Bangkok 2-4 October and benefit from the best power networking opportunities in Asia.
Kind regards,
Nigel Blackaby
Conference Director, POWER-GEN Asia
Welcome to POWER-GEN Asia and Renewable Energy World Asia 2013. It is the great honour
for Thailand to be selected as the venue of POWER-GEN Asia for the two consecutive years. The
event is of great significance to many organizations and business enterprises in power industry
and energy management, including the equipment manufacturers and suppliers, energy service
providers, fuel suppliers as well as research and development institutes.
EGAT is a large organization which has played a vital role in power generation and transmission. For
the past 44 years, it has been our commitment to build power system stability and to encourage
the power grid interconnection with the neighbouring countries on the basis of environment,
society and community responsibility. We own and operate 39 power plants located at different
sites across the kingdom with the installed capacity of 15000 MW or 46% of the total installed
capacity. We also operate a high voltage transmission network and National Control Center under
the Enhanced Single Buyer (ESB) Model. Natural gas is major fuel in power generation, followed
by lignite, heavy oil and diesel respectively. Apart from these, renewable energy such as hydro,
solar and wind power is also used to reduce global warming.
EGAT is growing along with the country development under the vision to become a world class
organization in the electric power industry. Currently EGAT Group consists of 5 subsidiaries and
affiliates as followed:
1. Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL.-RATCH
Estimates suggest that the amount of water needed for global power production is expected to double over the next 40 years. The World Energy
Council predicts that by 2050, total power demand for water is expected to increase by 100 billion cubic meters.
Faced with a booming population and associated power requirements, Asia faces a large challenge when it comes to water supply for power
generation. China alone is expected to see its water demand increase by a further 15%. Cooling water, boiler feedwater and wastewater treatment all
require increasing expertise and technical solutions to meet regulatory demands.
In light of this demand, the addition of an Industrial Water Day will be added to the POWER-GEN Asia 2013 conference line-up to provide information on
this growing market.
The new conference sessions are designed to provide highlights of some of the leading Asian countries when it comes to water management. As well
Technical Tour 1: Srinagarind Dam
Owner/Operator: Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)
Date: Tuesday 1 October 2013
Meeting Point: POWER-GEN Asia Registration Area, IMPACT Exhibition & Convention Centre
Meeting Time: 08:30
Duration:
All day
Cost: $130
Srinagarind Dam, Kanchanaburi Province
Srinagarind Dam is operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and
plays a crucial role in hydropower generation and agricultural production.
Situated on the Khwae Yai River basin in Si Sawat district, Srinagarind Dam is the first and
largest multi-purpose dam under the Mae Klong River Basin Development Project. This rock-fill
dam is 140 metres high, 610 metres long, 15 metres wide at the crest, and 586 metres wide
at the dam base. The reservoir area covers 419 square km, with a water storage capacity of
17,745 million cubic metres.
Construction of the dam began in 1973 and was completed in 1980. Its hydropower plant
accommodates five generating units with a combined capacity of 720 MW. Total investment in
the project, comprising the dam, the power plant with five generating units, and a transmission
system, was 6,811 million baht ($232m).
This multi-purpose dam provides a water supply for agriculture all year round, generates 1,250
million kilowatts of electricity annually, serves as a fish breeding source for local residents to
earn more income, and prevents saline water from damaging the area at the mouth of the Mae
Klong River. Moreover, it helps ease the flooding situation along the Mae Klong River basin, as
it can store a large volume of water during the rainy season. Srinagarind Dam has also become
one of famous tourist attractions in Kanchanaburi, and it welcomes more than 100 000 visitors
each year.
Srinagarind Dam is about 200 km northwest of Bangkok and it takes about two and a half
hours by road. The dam site has been developed into a recreation area for the public, as well.
Bang Pakong Thermal Power Plant
The site of Bang Pakong power plant covers an area of 1,680,000 square metres. It is
located on the left side of Bang Pakong River, in Tha kam sub-district, Bang Pakong district,
Chachoengsao province.
Bang Pakong power plant is comprised of both thermal and combined cycle, with a total
generating capacity of 4,384.60 MW. It has 5 units. The first unit was commissioned in 1984
and the last in 2009. It is operated by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).
The plant also consists of a construction of civil works including power plant structures and
