■ Congratulations to Krista Doering (‟04) and Andrew Giefer (‟04) who were married August 15, 2009 at Mt. Olive Lutheran
Church in Delano, MN. Krista and Andy live in Brooklyn Park, MN.

■ The Lord blessed Nick and Crystal (Farstad „97) Schweim with a baby boy on December 31, 2009. His name is Tate Nicolas
Schweim.
■ Dave and Stephanie (Kanduth ‟87) Schindeldecker announced the birth of their second son, Chase David, on February 20,
2010. He weighed 6 pounds 5 ounces and was 19.25” long. He joins brother Brady in Lakeville, MN.
■ Justin Wilth (‟06) is currently serving as a Naval Gunners Mate on the USS Bataan which is providing support in Haiti as a
floating pier. The USS Bataan is moving supplies to the island since the piers at Port au Prince were destroyed in the earthquake.
For this assignment, Justin has been transferred to the Supply Department on the ship since this is one of the busiest
departments at this time.
■ Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, MN announced that West graduate Matthew Behmer (‟08) has been elected as the 2010
-11 Student Body President. Congratulations, Matt!
■ Ryan Soukup (‟08), a sophomore at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, MN was named to the Dean‟s List for the Fall
Quarter 2009.
■ Nicholas K. Trebesch (‟06), a senior at Martin Luther College, New Ulm, MN was named to the Honors List in recognition of
academic achievement for the first semester. Students must achieve at least a 3.60 grade point average to qualify.
■ Corey R. Trebesch (‟08) was named to Dunwoody College of Technology Dean‟s List for winter quarter 2009. Students
named to the Dean‟s List are recognized for outstanding academic achievement by earning a 3.5 grade point average or
higher in 12 or more credits for the quarter.
Anne Schroeder Accepts Call
Miss Anne Schroeder has accepted a call to teach at Divine Saviors
Lutheran Academy in Doral, FL. Miss Schroeder will teach and coach
middle and high school students at
DSLA. The school has recently expanded
to include Grade 10 for the
2010-11 school year. Miss Schroeder
has faithfully served West Lutheran
for the past 11 years as an
instructor, coach, and mentor to the
female students at West. She has
been an outstanding asset to the
school and will be missed. At the
same time, we wish Miss Schroeder
(Schro) God‟s richest blessings in
her new and exciting calling in
Florida.
New Teacher Assignment
Replacing Miss Schroeder will be Miss Rachel Kionka (Key-on-ka).
Rachel was assigned to West at this year‟s call service at Martin Luther
College. Miss Kionka served a year in Malawi,
Africa, before being assigned to Luther Preparatory
School in Watertown, WI as a tutor for
the past two years. As a tutor, Miss Kionka
was responsible for teaching physical science,
supervising the girls‟ dorm, and coaching tennis.
As a dorm supervisor she counseled,
mothered, encouraged, doctored, and disciplined.
Prep tutors also cover teacher‟s
classes, help with ministry days, recruitment,
pep rallies and intramurals. Miss Kionka is
excited about her new calling. We welcome
her to the West family.
WLHS Annual Garage
& Bake Sale
The weekend of April 30 – May 1, 2010 was
dedicated to West‟s Annual Garage & Bake
Sale. The sale took place in the WLHS
gymnasium, and over 400 shoppers came
through our doors during the 2-day sale. Many
West parents and Association members donated
new or gently-used clothing, household items,
sports equipment, furniture, toys, books and
homemade baked goods for this annual event.
Approximately 100 parent, student and
Association volunteers contributed over 500
hours of their time and talents to setting up
tables, sorting and pricing donations, bagging
purchases, helping shoppers, and cleaning up at
the end of the sale. After expenses and with the
addition of supplemental funds from Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans, over $5,500 was
donated to West‟s Tuition Assistance and
General Operating Funds. Thanks to the many
dedicated volunteers for their help in making this
year‟s Garage & Bake Sale a successful event!

Worship and Graduation exercises took place on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the school. Forty-two graduates received
their diplomas. Rev. Dennis Klatt (Holy Trinity Lutheran – New Hope) led the worship service and Rev. Jonathan Ladner (West Lutheran
High School) delivered the commencement address. Elliot Epple (2002 West graduate) was the organist, and Gregory
Baures (West Lutheran High School) directed the choir. The class speaker was Joseph Sawtelle (Crystal). The class colors were
blue and silver, and the flower was a white rose. The class hymn was “Speak O Lord”, and the class verse is 1Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t
let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in faith and in purity.”

The students of West‟s select choir, Western Accents, for participating in the Choral Fest at Arizona Lutheran Academy,
Phoenix, AZ on April 7-11, 2010. The 420 WELS high school students from around the U.S. who participated had the privilege
of singing the Star Spangled Banner for an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game.

West’s Spring Blood Drive
Life is a precious gift from God. On May 12, 2010, West Lutheran High School
students, faculty, staff and parents helped preserve that gift by participating in the
Spring Blood Drive in the WLHS gymnasium. The event was sponsored by the
WLHS Teens for Life group. The day
began with a ham and eggs breakfast
for anyone giving blood. There were
47 registered donors, six walk-ins, six
deferrals, 14 first-time donors, and one
ALYX donor. In all, 42 units (pints)
were collected and donated to Memorial
Blood Centers of Minneapolis.
Since the first Blood Drive at West in
March of 2007, the students, faculty,
staff and parents of West have given
239 pints of life-saving blood.
Thanks to those who donated food and
funds toward the breakfast and to
those parents who helped with preparation
and clean-up of the meal.
Thanks especially to Principal Merl
Meitner for his support and to the students,
faculty, staff and parents who
donated and helped preserve God‟s
precious gift of life in others.
