The Forum - Spring 2002
by Kirk McCarley
Being melodically inclined, but otherwise not musically gifted, I often tend into verse given a word prompt. Take for instance
our employee newsletter, “The Forum.”
Forum evokes images of the Broadway production, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The refrain,
“something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone…” hums in my head as it may well resonate with others of
you acquainted with the classic comedy.
With that I officially “open up the curtain” to your “new” Forum newsletter. My desire is that you find this publication to be
“something for everyone:” familiar, appealing, aesthetic, and yes, perhaps even at times peculiar. In pursuit of these desires
the Forum’s editor and “beat” writers are endeavoring to produce for you something that will:
1) Be fun to read
2) Recognize employees and celebrate contributions
3) Provide information
This first issue of the year is one of transition. As such it should be somewhat familiar. It will also, however, feature a new
layout which you will hopefully find to be aesthetically appealing. As to the “peculiar” that’s where everyone’s help and input
is needed.
Let the Forum know if someone in your midst has achieved something special. Share information that may be unique and of
interest to others. Tell about upcoming events and milestones in your work area.
The Forum is one more way for each of us at the County to communicate. Please use this opportunity to let us know what’s
on your mind. Carpe diem!
With his face glowing almost as vibrantly as the three-foot
torch he held above his head, Charlie Lorentz – a project engineer
with the county’s Department of Highways and Traffic
– trotted down Oakland Avenue on January 8 as part of the
Olympic torch relay. Lorentz was one of only 11,500 people
in the nation selected to participate in the 46-state torch relay,
which culminated February 8 in Salt Lake City, Utah. (On
In This Issue
Highways and Traffic’s Lorentz Helps Escort
Olympic Flame Through St. Louis
By David Wrone
that date, the torch was used to ignite the Olympic Cauldron
as part of the 2002 Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony.)
For Lorentz, his role in the torch relay was the stuff of lifelong
memories. “This is a very special time,” he said of his twotenths
of a mile jaunt down Oakland. “It was just a fabulous
experience. There wasn’t any one more excited than me.”
Ever wondered what County employees in other departments do In each issue, this regular column will feature
each department and highlight the services that department provides. The goal is to learn about employees in
as cancer survivor Don
Foster – surrounded by gumballlighted
escort vehicles – made his
way west down Oakland to the
street’s intersection with Oakview
and touched his flame-capped
torch to that held by Lorentz. With
family members, friends and
strangers all bellowing their support
and a blizzard of camera
flashes raging behind him, the 22-
year Highways veteran wheeled
west to complete his leg of the relay.
Torch relay runners were selected by the Salt Lake Organizing
Committee and torch relay commercial sponsors. In
short essays submitted by relatives, friends and co-workers,
more than 200,000 people from across the country were
nominated for the honor. A long-time Boy Scout leader and
youth soccer coach, Lorentz was nominated by his daughter
Jenny. “She’s my most beautiful daughter,” noted Lorentz,
whose other six children are sons. (Charlie and wife Sally
also have four grandchildren.)
AIHA, the American Industrial Hygiene Association grants
accreditation only to those laboratories that have successfully
completed a rigorous application process. This process
begins with an AIHA review of a written application from the
laboratory describing the lab’s staff, facilities and quality control
programs. Then an AIHA site auditor visits the lab in person
to perform a detailed inspection of the analytical technique,
standards, operating procedures, reporting formats
and quality assurance programs. Last year AIHA adopted
the highest International Standard of total quality management
for analytical laboratories, ISO 17025. The Saint Louis
County Health Department Environmental Health Laboratories
has met this standard of excellence. This year they have
been formally recognized as being technically competent to
perform the analysis for metals, asbestos, PCM, organic
solvents, lead in paint chips, lead in dust wipes, and lead in
soil. This achievement marks a milestone for the Environmental
Health Laboratories in having its first lab section
achieve this high standard. The accreditation did not come
easy and required all of those in the laboratory working together
as a team to accomplish their goals. Congratulations
to all for your efforts!
JUSTICE SERVICES RECEIVES ACCREDITATION
By Trisha Rodgers
The Department of Justice Services was recently recommended for accreditation by the American Correctional Association
(ACA). Staff at all levels and in all areas of Justice Services prepared for four years for the ACA audit. On January 14, 2002
the ACA Visiting Committee arrived to begin the audit process. For three days, the members of the Committee conducted a
thorough inspection of the facility and all aspects of its operation. On January 16, the Visiting Committee held an exit meeting
to announce the audit results. Justice Services was found to be in compliance with 100% of the 38 mandatory national
standards and an exceptional 96.1% of the 383 applicable non-mandatory standards. The Committee was very favorably
impressed with the professionalism of the staff, the cleanliness and maintenance of the facility, and the care and custody of
inmates. Special mention was made of areas such as the Department’s Choices Program, the Corrections Medicine programs,
and the Justice Services in-service training program. The Department will receive their Accreditation Certificate in
May 2002 at the Correctional Accreditation Managers Association Conference. We at Justice Services are extremely proud
to be one of only 110 jails in the entire nation, and the only one in Missouri, to be granted accreditation by the ACA.
The Forum - Spring 2002
It’s that time again! We asked County employees for their best tips to take the work out of spring cleaning. We expected to
find more advice from women than men, but we found it’s a part of almost everyone’s routines. Here’s their advice:
I make sure my husband and I take vacation
time together in the spring so he
can help me with the cleaning. He helps
me by moving the furniture and putting
things together that have been broken
or new articles that I have bought - Terise
Farrell (JS), Office Specialist
Do a little bit each week when you clean
- you will never have spring cleaning
because it is done all year round – Laura
Berry (Admin), Administrative Assistant
I move all my furniture around. I flip my
mattresses and vacuum them. I also
shampoo all my rugs and carpeting -
Janice Laycob (JS) , Social Worker
I rotate my furniture, clean out each room
and throw things out that I haven’t used.
I also have a garage sale with all my
unwanted items - Will Hampton (JS),
Practicum Student
Use a leaf blower to clean leaves and
other materials from roof gutters – Frank
Berra (Admin), Director, Purchasing
My tip is don’t do it till fall, then call it fall
cleaning, then repeat the process in the
fall – Bob Cradick (Admin), General
Services Supervisor
The Ups and Downs of Ladders
Here are some tips to keep you safe while spring cleaning: # Avoid positioning a ladder in front of a door. If you
# Make sure your ladder is fully open with
have to, make sure the door is locked or blocked.
the spreaders locked.
# Allow only one person on a ladder at a time.
# Always unfold a stepladder rather than
# Wear sensible, nonskid shoes when using a ladder.
leaning it against a wall like a straight
# Keep your waist between the ladder rails. Instead of
#
ladder.
reaching far out to he side, step down to the floor and
Use a firm, level surface free of clutter on
move the ladder.
which to place a ladder.
New w Directions for the Training and
Development elopment Staff
by the T& OD Staff
Last fall when dramatic changes occurred in the Training and
Development staff, we saw it as an opportunity to step back
and look at what we were doing and why we were doing it.
After conducting 10 focus groups and evaluating 450 feedback
surveys, we’ve decided, as Sam Walton would say, to
“eliminate the dumb” (and fluff). Our two certificate programs
will be shorter and will concentrate on developing a strong
workforce – what all employers want their employees to have
in desired knowledge, skills and behaviors. The ESDP program
will consist of just seven courses and the ICMA program
will be six courses. In addition, we will provide offerings
to two previously neglected groups, the non-supervising professional
and mid-level managers. Look for the Training
Schedule to see which courses suit you! If you have questions
or comments, please contact us: Ruth Rollins, 615-
0147; Sarah Slaughter, 615-4490; or Mary Archer, 615-7629.
FREE Computer Training
New Horizons offers a FREE “Computers Made Easy”
class for County employees with little or no computer skills.
The next class is April 4, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
