The Forum - Spring 2002
It’s that time again! We asked County employees for their best tips to take the work out of spring cleaning. We expected to
find more advice from women than men, but we found it’s a part of almost everyone’s routines. Here’s their advice:
I make sure my husband and I take vacation
time together in the spring so he
can help me with the cleaning. He helps
me by moving the furniture and putting
things together that have been broken
or new articles that I have bought - Terise
Farrell (JS), Office Specialist
Do a little bit each week when you clean
- you will never have spring cleaning
because it is done all year round – Laura
Berry (Admin), Administrative Assistant
I move all my furniture around. I flip my
mattresses and vacuum them. I also
shampoo all my rugs and carpeting -
Janice Laycob (JS) , Social Worker
I rotate my furniture, clean out each room
and throw things out that I haven’t used.
I also have a garage sale with all my
unwanted items - Will Hampton (JS),
Practicum Student
Use a leaf blower to clean leaves and
other materials from roof gutters – Frank
Berra (Admin), Director, Purchasing
My tip is don’t do it till fall, then call it fall
cleaning, then repeat the process in the
fall – Bob Cradick (Admin), General
Services Supervisor
The Ups and Downs of Ladders
Here are some tips to keep you safe while spring cleaning: # Avoid positioning a ladder in front of a door. If you
# Make sure your ladder is fully open with
have to, make sure the door is locked or blocked.
the spreaders locked.
# Allow only one person on a ladder at a time.
# Always unfold a stepladder rather than
# Wear sensible, nonskid shoes when using a ladder.
leaning it against a wall like a straight
# Keep your waist between the ladder rails. Instead of
#
ladder.
reaching far out to he side, step down to the floor and
Use a firm, level surface free of clutter on
move the ladder.
which to place a ladder.
