The Tradition Continues...
Success On The Course
Two For The Price Of One
Michigan State became just the third school to
have both the men’s and women’s golf teams win
the Big Ten Championship in the same year when
both programs won the championship in 2007.
Only Ohio State, which did it six times, and Indiana,
in 1996, have accomplished the feat. While the
women’s team won the Big Ten title by 13 strokes,
the men’s squad tied for the title with Minnesota.
Below is a look at the school’s that have won
both the men’s and women’s golf championships
in the same season.
Success In Class
Nearly Perfect
Kristen Polanski received the Presidents Award
- which is given to the top graduating female athlete
at Michigan State - at the Student-Athlete
Support Services 10th Annual Awards Banquet on
April 9.
A finance major, Polanski posted a 3.97015
grade point average as a finance major. She also
capped off the year by earning her second Big Ten
Sportsmanship award after posting a 79.89 scoring
average in nine rounds. Polanski played 32
rounds in her collegiate career, finishing a careerhigh
sixth at the Mary Fossum Invitational in 2004.
Polanski was one of five Spartans to earn
Academic All-Big Ten honors, along with senior
Heather Rose, juniors Sara Brown and Jordyn
Wells and sophomore Holly Niederkohr. Only
seven Spartans were eligible for the award.
In the past two seasons, the Spartans have
earned 13 Academic All-Big Ten awards.
Rose Gets Third NGCA Scholar-Athlete Award
Senior Heather Rose became the fourth player
in school history to earn three NGCA Scholar-
Athlete awards, as she finished her career having
played a school-record 148 rounds and with a degree
in marketing.
Rose joined the trio of Ann Marie Kerstan (2002-
04), Ellen Bishop (1997-99) and Meggan Schumaker
(1997-99), as the only women’s golfers to earn
the national award in each of her eligible years at
Michigan State.
To be eligible for the NGCA award, an athlete
must have an overall grade point average of 3.50 or
higher (on a 4.00 scale) for the entirety of their collegiate
career, be of high moral character and have
played in 60% of the college’s regularly scheduled
competitive rounds during the year nominated.
During head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll’s 10
years at the helm of the Spartans, Michigan State
has earned 17 Scholar-Athlete Awards from the
NGCA and she has coached all four players who
have earned the award three times.
