OTHER NEWS
Further meetings have taken place with
England Hockey which will bring about
improved support for hockey in Higher
Education. Affiliation will be streamlined
such that BUSA will collect all affiliation
fees for English Universities and provide an
improved package of services to members.
Some additional funding will be retained
by BUSA from this to again improve the
services to hockey members. Discussions
are on-going about the role of HE sport in
England and GB Hockey’s performance
pathway and the potential exists for some
exciting and interesting developments in
this area.
CHAMPIONSHIP
18-19 March – University of
Wolverhampton Walsall Campus
The 2006 Championships saw an increase
in overall entries to 237 competitors.
Many of the competitors were returning
Champions looking to retain their titles.
Steven Rogan (Dan Grade, U60kg), Andy
Burns (Dan Grade, U90kg), Rhonda
Sturley (Dan Grade, Over78kg) and
Faye Wilkinson (Kyu Grade, U78kg) all
successfully retained their title and took
gold for a second year running. In the
Men’s Kyu Grade U66kg category a rivalry
is forming between Mark Comer of Bath
and Tariq Sasso of Brunel, for the second
year running these competitors met in the
Final. In a reversal of the result from 2005,
Mark Comer took the title this year and it
will be a category to watch next year in
anticipation of a third Championship title
fight between these two. Karen Harrison
(Bath) and Kate Rennie (Bath) both
dropped down a weight category and were
unable to defend their titles from 2005,
however both won in their new categories.
