Men’s Hockey
The Men’s Hockey proved to be a thrilling
competition, with the title only being decided
in the dying minutes of the final games.
Having drawn with each other in an earlier
fixture, not only was a win a must for the
Northern Ireland and Scottish Universities in
order to claim the title, but goal difference
was also going to be an important factor.
Men’s Football Team
Having come back from a 2-0 deficit against
the Welsh, the Scottish Universities had a
spirited final 10 minutes scoring 3 goals.
With Northern Ireland only drawing with the
English Universities at the time, it looked
like the title had been won. However,
Northern Ireland refused to give up and,
having also come back from 2-0 down to
2-2, scored a goal in the last 2 minutes of
the game and thereby claiming the title on
goal difference. With the matches running
concurrently on adjacent pitches, it was an
atmospheric climax to the tournament.
Women’s Hockey
The title for the Women’s competition also
came down to the final day’s play, with
Scottish Universities needing a win against
the Welsh Universities to claim the title.
Not content with just a win, the Scottish
put on an impressive display scoring 8
goals on the final day.
NETBALL
The netball once again proved to be a
hotly contested competition with only a
few goals in it for a number of the fixtures.
It was Northern Ireland, however, that
were able to claim the title with solid
performances throughout the tournament.
Having entered into a unique partnership
with BUSA in 2005, Lucozade Sport
has been fuelling the success of BUSA’s
elite squad throughout 2006. Actively
addressing the contamination and
nutritional needs of BUSA athletes,
Lucozade Sport supplied the squad with
a range of contaminant tested nutritional
products specifically manufactured and
packaged to provide a complete solution
to their specific needs. John Houston
(Herriot Watt University), Captain of the
World University Rugby 7’s Championships
Team that won silver in Italy this year said
‘having access to Lucozade Sport, and the
additional nutritional support, was a great
help for the team in achieving our success
at the World University Championships
this year. It helped us recover more quickly
after the matches and also helped to give
us the edge.”
This nutritional support will continue
as part of Lucozade Sport and BUSA’s
ongoing partnership. With the global
nature of student competition, the
specialist products Lucozade Sport has
to offer via the Lucozade Sport Science
Academy (LSSA) will play an integral role
in BUSA training camps and competitions
throughout the world, helping to give
student athletes at all levels the edge.
BUSA’s elite coaches and medical staff
have direct access to Lucozade Sport
dietitians at the LSSA who provide relevant
sports nutrition and hydration advice that
can be easily translated into practical
solutions for their athletes. In addition,
all student athletes can benefit from the
This was the first time that BUSA in
conjunction with England Volleyball had
entered a team into the Beach Volleyball
Championships. The tournament itself was
of a good level with many of the athletes
having world tour experience.
Following close consultation with UK
Athletics a full Men’s and Women’s team
was selected to compete in Algeria. Kate
Reed made up for the disappointment of
narrowly missing out on a Medal at the
2004 Championships by taking the silver
Medal and she was followed closely
home by Eleanor Baker in the Bronze
Medal position and Hatti Dean in fourth
place. With Elizabeth Hall (9 th ) and Freya
Murray (19 th ) also finishing in the top 20
the Great Britain Women’s team took the
top honours in the team event.
The Men’s team finished 6 th overall, with
James Walsh in 28 th place.
TIME TRIAL
Peter Williams posted an excellent 3 rd
fastest time on the 1 st lap but he was unable
to maintain this pace and finally finished just
36 seconds away from a Medal position in
8 th place. Neil rode a consistent time trial
and was placed 10 th . With both GB riders
within the top 10 this was an excellent start
to the Championships.
