ANNUAL REVIEW 2005-6
Associate Sponsors
The Daily Telegraph has been an Associate
Sponsor of BUSA for a decade and has
been committed to promoting sporting
excellence, at all levels, during this time.
Discount vouchers for The Daily Telegraph
continued to be available from the BUSA
website, with newspapers available
from as little as 20p for BUSA members.
Leaflets advertising this discount were also
distributed at BUSA events in 2005-2006.
The Daily Telegraph is Britain's best-selling
quality daily newspaper; featuring worldclass
columnists include Alan Hansen,
Henry Winter, Mark Nicholas, Geoffrey
Boycott and Brian Moore in a separate
dedicated sport section every day.
The 2005-2006 academic year marks the
start of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ eighth
year of sponsorship of BUSA.
PwC, one of the world's largest
professional services firms and a
major graduate recruiter, values the
extracurricular activities and achievements
that BUSA and its membership promotes.
In recognition of this, in the years that PwC
have been an Associate Sponsor of BUSA,
the relationship has continued to grow and
develop.
We entertained over a hundred new
graduates in April at the 2006 BUSA
Rugby Union Finals in Twickenham. As
well as enjoying two fantastic Finals in the
Committee Box at Twickenham, our guests
enjoyed some fine dining in the Invincibles
restaurant before the match.
PwC once again organised the Annual
Softball competition between the BUSA
Office, representatives from the University
of London Union and PwC recruitment
staff. An enjoyable day was had by all,
with BUSA staff winning the event despite
some stiff competition.
In addition to being an Associate Sponsor
of BUSA, PwC also supported the BUSA
Equity Seminar which explored the
growing need for inclusivity in society and
what the Higher Education sector could do
to improve this.
Regular reports on BUSA Championship
Events are available on PwC's careers
website at www.pwc.com/uk/careers/
where you'll also find information about
the firm's undergraduate and graduate
programmes.
INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
4 March 2006, Exeter
With almost 400 entrants from 38
Universities, this was the biggest one day
indoor shoot of the year.
Every year, the standard of competition is
very high, and this year was no exception
as 4 records were changed and one
equalled.
In the Recurve division, Tim Mundon
(Edinburgh) won with a score of 588
- equalling the 10 year record set by
Matt Gray. With another gold as well as
silver for the Ladies, and gold in novice
Men’s, Edinburgh unsurprisingly took the
honours in the team event - breaking the
8 year record set by Loughborough. This
meant that, of the 6 possible records for
Compound and Recurve archers (both
Indoor and Outdoor), Tim Mundon became
the current holder of 5 (and previous holder
of the remaining) and took his tally of
medals to 16 (12 gold) over 11 years.
Alex Lyne (Loughborough) showed
breathtaking potential in his second year
of Archery - last year’s Novice Champion
- took Recurve bronze, while the new
SMG Student Rep, Matthew Johnson
(Cambridge), had a long and nerve-racking
wait from his first round lead to eventually
end with silver. The next three places
were all tied on score and it was only the
number of golds which separated them,
and with 17 archers all scoring above 550
it was a well fought competition.
Although not recognised for medals yet,
a growing number of archers were keen
to contest the Barebow and Longbow
categories with a record number of
Archers shooting in these categories
– 21 Barebow and 8 Longbow (and only a
quarter from Wales!).
The Compound Men’s competition was
incredibly tough, with the top 10 breaking
the 570 barrier and all three medal winners
scoring over 580. In the Women’s,
Rebecca Gridley (Edinburgh) made the
transition from Recurve to Compound look
easy being the outright winner with 559.
OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
17 June 2006, Lilleshall National Sports
Centre
Over 300 archers entered the individual
competition and nearly 60 teams entered
the Championship and Shield.
Tim Mundon (Edinburgh) and Jacqui Gould
(Greenwich) took gold in the Recurve
competition and Robert Gruar (Liverpool)
and Kirsty Sutton (Bradford) took the titles
in the Compound.
The Team events saw Cambridge retaining
the Championship title and Edinburgh
retaining the Shield title.
OTHER NEWS
This year saw Andrew Somers step down
from the SMG, whilst Michael Ward joined
at the beginning of the year, and Matthew
Johnson (Cambridge) volunteered his
services as Student Representative.
For full results, records, SMG meeting
minutes and surveys carried out, see the
BUSA website. A survey was carried out in
2005, and with 217 responses the results
are being used to develop university
Archery. The 2007 Outdoor Championships
will be a trial run of a FITA round (from the
current Albion for Men’s and Compound
Archers and Windsor for the rest of the
Women’s).
Championships please see the International
ATHLETICS
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
4 February 2006, University of Stirling
67 Universities made the trip to Scotland
for the Cross-Country Championships,
with over 700 athletes taking part. These
included the athletes warming up for
victory later in the month in the English
Cross Country Championships (see below).
Frank Tickner led the Birmingham Men’s
team to victory over St Mary’s and
Loughborough in the Men’s Long Race.
Andi Jones (Manchester Met) and Andy
Vernon (St Mary’s) took the minor places.
Eleanor Baker and Lizzie Hall won gold
and silver for Brunel in the Women’s Long
Race, with Laura Kenny (Loughborough)
third. Birmingham won another close
race in the team competition, beating
Loughborough Women’s by one point, with
Heriot Watt in third place.
Jon Blackledge (Oxford) edged Mark
Buckingham (Sheffield Hallam) on the
final hill, to win the Men’s Short Race,
with Tom Snow (Brunel) finishing third.
Eleanor Sherrard-Smith (Cardiff) saw off
Abby Westley and Laura Finucane (both
Loughborough) in the Women’s Short
Race.
Loughborough Men gained revenge over
St Mary’s in the Men’s B race, to win the
team title.
Special thanks goes to the staff at Stirling
University, Stirling Athletic Union and
Athletics Club for their tireless efforts in
organising the event. The Scottish Officials,
