Lions Club Essay Contest
Earlier this year the Lions Club hosted an American Heritage essay
contest. The topic was “Who Is Your Favorite President” Two of our
students at Smithsburg Elementary School were chosen as winners. Riley
House, a fourth grade student, chose to write about John F.
Kennedy. Riley said, “I picked him because I have seen a lot of
movies and pictures of him and I wanted to learn more about him.
Then after a little research on him I decided he was my favorite!”
Samantha Diehl, a fifth grade student, wrote her essay on her feelings
about George Washington. Sam said, “I picked him because he was in the war
and he was really nice.” Both students attended an awards dinner in their
honor in January. We are very proud to have two very gifted writers from our
school community honored.
The Counselor Connection
Stacy Doak –Professional School Counselor
It is so hard to believe that summer is upon us and we are nearly at the end of the
school year! What a wonderful year it has been for me to have worked with all of
your children in some way throughout the year. Now that I have my first year
finished, I look forward to moving full speed ahead as we approach next school
year. Here are a few things still to come:
**Smithsburg Career Cafe started in February to get 5 th grade students thinking
about their future career path and the journey to achieve their dream as they met
with Max Krumpe, owner of Krumpe’s donuts as well as Dr. Doak, a large animal
veterinarian. Please let me know if you would like to come and speak at one of our
Career Café’s!
**Mark your calendar for the 5 th grade MIX IT UP MIXER on May 20 th from
5:30 -7:30 pm. All 5 th graders from elementary schools going to Smithsburg
Middle school are invited to attend. Invitations with more information will be
sent home soon. Please RSVP to Mrs. Doak!
**Please let me know if your child would benefit from small group intervention next
year. Topics for small groups include social skills, divorce, anger management,
making and keeping friends, academic support, and self-esteem.
Helpful Resources
Are you a grandparent or a relative who is raising a minor child If so, you are not
alone. There are currently 2,720 grandparents caring for children in Washington
County. There is support available to you! Grandparent/Relative Caregivers Support
Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 10:00 am -12:00 pm at the
Washington County Commission on Aging at 140 West Franklin St. in Hagerstown.
Please call Ruth Brown at 301-790-0275 ext. 205 for more information.
If you have a child with ADHD, ADDitude is a wonderful online magazine resource for
you. Go to their website http://www.additudemag.com/ for practical information
about raising children with ADHD, including behavior and discipline strategies, help
making and keeping friends, and organizing for success.
Green School Kids Thank You!
Thank you for taking the time to find old phone books and
send them in. We collected over 600 phone books. That’s 600
phone books that won’t end up in a land fill but will be
repurposed for other paper uses.
As you get new phone books or find more old ones
please remember we will be collecting again next year!
