Don’t Count on It! In the 13th century, Kublai Khan’s army was unstoppable, moving his empire westward into Eastern Europe and Asia Minor. Unfortunately, his navy was not so reliable. Twice he attempted to sail massive armies to conquer Japan only to be twice defeated, not by the Japanese Samurais, but by the Kamikaze (“divine winds”) at sea. His army could defeat anyone; he wasn’t counting on fighting the elements. King David’s plans for conquest also met devastation when he decided that he would be much better off relying on his massive population than the God who had been his Rock since childhood. In 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21, David wanted to see what all that his great leadership had done for him and took a census of his kingdom. So from Dan to Beersheba, he sent his census workers and counted 800,000 valiant men (2 Sam. 24:9). This brought a lot of security to David until his “heart condemned him” (2 Sam 21: 10). David fell into the same trap we all do, placing confidence in the blessings God gives us rather than the God who gave them. Paul puts it this way, “exchanging the truth of God for the lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). Blessings are to focus you on God, not the blessings. The outcome was devastating. God sent a plague on Israel. In three days, David lost 70,000 of his valiant men (2 Sam 24:15). Job noted that “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away.” For His own purposes, God may remove every blessing you have. Like Abraham, He may call you to give up your most cherished possession. Like Moses, He may leave you walking in circles for years, humbling you for a specific calling. Like John the Baptist, he may bring a successful ministry to a sudden end. Regardless, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps” (Prov. 16:9). We cannot take God out of the equation. Let’s not be like the rich fool who laid up wealth for himself and ignored God. If the greatest armies in the world can be destroyed by a single act of God, how can we resist His will Don’t be fooled by your own capabilities. The only census you should take is “am I one person obedient to God” Tides turn; we are too vulnerable to place our trust in anything or anyone less than God. Don’t count on anything else.
