Bill and Becky Leight
have been faithfully
serving at Anchorage
years as Minister of Music.
them on Sunday, Nov. 18 and you will have an
opportunity to give them a special love offering.
You can make your check out to them personally
or if you desire a tax receipt, please make your
check out to ABT for them. Take this opportunity
to express your appreciation for their faithfulness to
our church for these
40 years of service.
Christ in Anchorage, Alaska, and the
rest of the world.
"The preaching
of Christ is the
whip that flogs
the devil. The
preaching of
Christ is the
thunderbolt, the
sound of which
makes all hell
shake."
Charles Spurgeon
Responsibility
Though many of us might
not have noticed this
event, but on September
3, 2012 Rosebud
Entertainment reintroduced a
well-remembered fad from the
70’s, the Pet Rock. For those
who are not familiar with this
dubious product, the Pet Rock was the brain child
of Gary Dahl who took a stone and packaged it in
a box with instructions of “how to feed and care
for your rock.” In actuality, the Pet Rock was
marketed as the perfect pet for those who wanted
a companion that required no commitment on
their part to maintain it. Some people see the
church that way.
When Jesus established the Church, He did so with
a commission, “Go therefore and make disciples
of all the nations” Matt 28:19. He did not lay out
a tactical map of exactly how that was to be done;
He simply gave His Spirit to enable the believers
to do it. The difference, however, between the
1st Century Church and today’s Church is not the
goals, the Spirit, or the mission, but rather the
structure of how the Church functions. As with ABT,
we don’t meet in houses, we meet in a building.
Though we sponsor various missionaries, we also
have outreach through media. We are an organism
within an organization; meaning, we are people
dedicated to the Great Commission, expressing it
in their treasures, talents, and time doing so within
the framework of the Anchorage Baptist Temple.
The Church is not a fad. It is not a place where you
can simply be a part of a group with no commitment
on your part to maintain it. God doesn’t call us into
an impersonal relationship with Himself or His
people, but rather enables, edifies, and establishes
us into His service through the Church. The Church
is not a Pet Rock for our convenience but rather
the foundational Rock where Jesus Christ is the
Chief Cornerstone and we are built upon that
foundation. (Eph. 2:20)
As we approach another Stewardship
campaign, it is vital that we examine the
importance of the ministry of ABT in regards
to our roles as Christians. Jesus has promised to
sustain His Church; He has promised to sustain
us. We need to proceed, by faith, on that promise
and be responsible stewards with
the sustenance He graciously
provides to each one of us.
Days of Prosperity and Years of Pleasure
Theme
God desires His children to have days of prosperity and years of pleasure. This wonderful
lifestyle is the reward promised to obedient believers who serve the Lord!
Scripture Reading
Job 36:5-12 “Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom. He preserveth
not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor. He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with
kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them forever, and they are exalted. And if they be bound in
fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they
have exceeded. He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity. If they
obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. But if they obey not,
they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.”
Relating to Scripture
The book of Job has to do with a man Job, who endured tremendous suffering and calamity. During the
course of his suffering, Job became guilty of blaming God for his trouble. In the midst of one such event, a
young man named Elihu began to speak on God’s behalf.
Job said that the cry of suffering was unheard by God, claiming God was unconcerned. Elihu responds by
saying that God is mighty, and strong in wisdom. He says that God does not favor the wicked but cares for the
righteous. He says if the righteous are afflicted, suffering can serve as instruction to bring them out. Elihu then
tells Job that if those who are afflicted obey and serve God, then days of prosperity and years of pleasures will
result. If the afflicted do not obey God, Elihu warns, they will perish and die.
The promise of God as spoken by Elihu, is just as true for you and me today as it was for Job. If we obey and
serve God, our lives will be filled with days of prosperity and years of pleasures. To the contrary, if we walk in
disobedience, we shall perish and die. The choice is ours. Disobedience brings death. Obedience, however,
brings days of prosperity and years of pleasure. Today may we give in obedience that we might reap the
promises of God.
Offering Admonition
We give our tithes and offerings today in obedience to God’s Word. Because of this faithfulness, we are assured of
days of prosperity and years of pleasure.
