The Office of the Minister of State: Sports Presents the 2012 National Sports Awards
The Management and Staff of the Office of the Minister of State Sports cordially invite you to participate in the
2012 National Sports Awards by submitting suitably qualified persons for nomination for one of the nine (9)
awards which will be presented on May 25, 2013.
The summary of each award is as follows:
A. Date: May 25, 2013
B. Period under consideration: January 1 – December 31, 2012
C. Age of the Athlete: 18 years of age or older during the period of consideration
D. Types of Sports to be considered for awards:
a) Physical Sports – competitive sports requiring physical activity
b) Mind Sports – competitive sports requiring little or no physical activity to include card games and
strategy board games,
E. Category:
1. Top Female Athlete of the Year- awarded to the female sportsperson who best demonstrates supreme
athletic performance and achievement in the physical sports category.
2. Top Male Athlete of the Year- awarded to the male sportsperson who best demonstrates supreme
athletic performance and achievement in the physical sports category.
3. Mind Sports Athlete of the Year - awarded to the sportsperson who best demonstrates supreme
performance and achievement in the mind sports category.
4. Top Sports Coach of the Year- awarded to the sports coach who best demonstrates the highest level of
technical and professional capability which results in the highest level of performance and achievement.
5. Top Sports Official of the Year- awarded to the sports official who best demonstrates the highest level
of technical and professional capability at the highest level of performance and achievement.
6. Community Sports Club of the Year Award - awarded to the entity which best demonstrates the use of
sports as a platform for bringing about positive social and/ or economic change at the community level.
7. Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports - awarded to the sportsperson who has made a major impact on
the world of sports during their lifetime. To be awarded only to persons who have given a minimum of
10 years of service in the area under consideration and is at least 50 years old.
8. Governor General’s Physically and Intellectually Challenged Sports Award for Courage – awarded to
the sportsperson who best demonstrates excellent athletic achievement and strong leadership qualities in
sports despite physical, mental or other challenges.
9. Honour Roll- awarded to persons who would have served in sporting disciplines over a certain period of
time.
