Pub Scratchings continued that this is due to the high costs of running the pub. It has been withdrawn from the 2012 GBG. New licensees are being sought. LEWES As part of Lewes OctoberFeast there was a beer festival at the Snowdrop Inn from 7-9 October. Mark Tranter, Head Brewer at Dark Star was invited to curate the interesting and eclectic mix of the beers that have inspired him (his Desert Island Beer List all under canvas in the garden). There were also tastings with beer-writers Pete Brown and Melissa Cole, a pro-am Scotch Egg Tournament and a BBQ with live jazz. The Black Horse is now stocking three well-kept Dark Star beers after Greene King relaxed the tie. Good, cheap food too. LITTLEHAMPTON The Cob and Pen has reverted to its original name of the White Hart. To complement the Anchor Springs ales more local beers are now available at the Crown; Hepworth and Hammerpot ales have been included in the line-up. A September visit found Hepworth English Summer Ale, Hammerpot Martlet and Madgwick Gold plus Anchor Springs LA Gold, Mild and Riptide. LOWER BEEDING The Crabtree reopened on 8 Sept after considerable refurbishment by Hall & Woodhouse. PETT The Royal Oak continues to attract real ale drinkers; with a varied menu from sandwiches to gourmet meals this is fast establishing itself as a pub not to be missed. The very busy Two Sawyers, further up the village, remains excellent for real ales and its very popular restaurant. PETWORTH Some updates from a town that hasn’t featured for some time on these pages. A pleasant atmosphere at the Fuller’s house, the Star, with Gale’s Seafarers and HSB plus Fuller’s London Pride, and the seasonal Red Fox. The Stonemasons offered Langham Best Bitter plus changing guests, such as Hook Norton Old Hooky, Andwell Gold Muddler and Skinner’s Betty Stogs, plus a beer festival from 14-16 October with around a dozen beers. On the southern outskirts, the stone-built Grove Inn, now more of a country restaurant, has the one real ale, King Horsham Best Bitter. After a few years of closure, the Grade II listed former coaching inn, the Angel, re-opened after a tasteful refurbishment that has left the front entrance area unchanged. The rear has been opened up and extended with a central bar servery with three hand pumps, as has the side bar but there is also cooled stillage for six casks waiting final commissioning. A large suntrap patio garden has also been refurbished. Initial visits found excellent Langham Best (£3.20) plus Hammerpot HPA and Arundel Castle, with Langham Sundowner to follow. An up-market menu had some reasonably priced starters and light bites but the sandwiches proved to be excellent value, with superb crusty bread and very well filled. SALEHURST The continued sunshine has enabled the extremely popular Wednesday ‘pizzas from the outside oven’ to continue at the Halt. Beers from Thornbridge, Dark Star, Harveys and the local Old Dairy Brewery are ever-changing. SCAYNES HILL The Farmers is now apparently trading as the Inn on the Green. ST LEONARDS-ON-SEA Following a short closure of the Silverhill Tavern, when the previous owner failed to find the right formula for this real ale pub, Wayne and Nickki have refurbished it and, with four beers on, real ale drinkers are tempted again. Comfortable chairs and a pool table have also been introduced. The Dripping Spring remains open! After many weeks of uncertainty it can be reported that the pub continues to offer a wide range of beers. Similarly the North Star now has five ever-changing real ales. 8 Sussex Drinker: Winter 2011
TICEHURST The historic Bell Inn is due to reopen in mid-November. WINCHELSEA BEACH The Ship is recently reopened and fully refurbished together with ample seating outside, especially in the spectacular themed rear garden. Whilst trade develops two beers are on. Skinner’s Betty Stogs was very good on a recent visit. WESTFIELD The August Bank Holiday beer festival at the Old Courthouse was a huge success and well attended. Beer of the Festival was won by Acorn Gorlovka. The pub remains very good with an ever-changing beer range. WORTHING During the summer the Charles Dickens was reported as selling a good pint of Harveys Best plus Exmoor Stallion, Sharp’s Doom Bar and a BrewDog beer, all at reasonable prices. The Swan has discontinued Greene King Abbot Ale, which was just not selling, and is using the spare pump to dispense cider - currently Westons Old Rosie. Regular beers are now Harveys Best, Sharp’s Doom Bar and Shepherd Neame Spitfire, with Harveys Old Ale (excellent as ever) as current guest. Alan’s policy of continually-changing Sussex beers has been so successful at The Farmhouse, Durrington, that a third pump has been added; when he took over only one pump was needed. Kissingate, Hammerpot and Arundel beers have been the most popular with Dark Star and Edge appearing recently. Parsonage Bar & Restaurant, 6-10 High Street, Tarring, is a recent refurbishment of what was the reception area in a Grade IIlisted former museum, into a stylish and contemporary bar serviced from a cooled cellar room commissioned from Harveys. It is already gaining a reputation for the consistent excellence of the Harveys Best Bitter (£2.80) and the range of Tapas snacks. A second beer, Young’s Bitter is now available.
