Stowe Scholars named
Sizwe Mntambo, Rosie Gumede, Smanga Mthethwa, Khulile Khanyile, and Nonkululeko Thabethe
have been chosen as the 2012–2013 Stowe and Tufton Scholars. Mr. Colin Dudgeon, visiting
from Stowe School in the United Kingdom, announced the names at assembly. The Stowe Scholar
Exchange Programme began in 2008. Since the programme's inception, 25 grade 9 learners from
Dominican have had the opportunity to study for one year at Stowe School in the UK. Synergies
between the schools have led to gap students, teacher visits, and the 2012 choir and marimba tour.
Ongoing support for these initiatives is provided by benefactors from Stowe School.
Many soccer, netball, and volleyball matches in Term 2. Please be patient with school transport.
Language alive
Last month, learners celebrated a Language is Alive evening. We enjoyed
hearing poems, songs, short plays, and fables, and hearing about
healthy eating habits in Afrikaans, isiZulu, SeSotho, Portuguese and
English. Parents thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We thank all of the
language teachers for working hard and making us stars.
FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK
Potential Energy
Schools always have a nervous energy at the start of term—apprehension and
excitement mixed together at the thought of the work that has to be covered, while
remembering the many opportunities on offer. Term 2 will be full of such moments
of excitement and anticipation. It is how we use our time both in preparation for the
mid-year examinations and in getting involved in a diverse range of activities that
will determine whether the term is a successful one or not. The recent selection of
the fifth group of Stowe Scholars proves again that there is no limit to what you can
achieve at Dominican if you get involved and work hard—the choice is up to you, just
as the term is full of potential for all of us. Have a great weekend!
