Nanotechnology and Air Pollution • Researchers at PNNL have also developed new materials that inexpensively capture carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) efficiently and selectively. • They’ve used materials based on metalorganic frameworks (MOF) to make tiny “cages” capable of capturing the CO 2 . • These MOFs have 2-3 times the CO 2 capacity compared to conventional sorbents. • Releasing the CO 2 from the MOF requires just the pull of a vacuum, while other technologies require heating up to release the gas. • The CO 2 can then be pumped deep into the Earth where it becomes stable in the form of carbonate minerals.
