YMCA Alumni Kevin Guevara, Then and Now...
In 2007 and 2008, Kevin Guevara was enrolled in the YMCA Youth Achievers after
school program for 7th and 8th grade students from Costa Mesa Middle School, hosted
next door at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant Costa Mesa. Kevin always showed
promise as a charismatic, caring young man, yet circumstances in his life challenged his
bright future. Fortunately, we have had the opportunity to get in touch with Kevin, five
years later, and below is his update.
“I want to say how grateful and blessed I am to have had you and the Y in my life to guide
me through my ups and down during my ridiculous “rebellious stage” that I had put you guys
through. Without the YMCA’S counseling and guidance, I believe I would have been a failure
in life, but instead you guys and the rest of the YMCA family made me feel like I was a part of
something. I won’t lie, I recall I used to dread “homework time” when some of the tutors would
assist us with our assignments for the day. But now that I look back, I see how important and
crucial it was, because those little aspects of “homework time” is what has helped me become
more of a scholar today.
I am currently a second year student at Santa
Barbara City College (S.B.C.C) and am majoring in
Medical Biology. I frequently take 15-18 units
per semester (4-5 classes). My future goals for
my education are to transfer to The University
of California Santa Barbara and graduate with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. Next my
main target is to get admitted to The University of
California Los Angeles (UCLA) for Medical School. I
have always dreamed of becoming a doctor either in
dentistry or the medical field. I have always wanted

to show my altruistic concern for the welfare of
others. I want to be able to create a family who I may support and care for. I believe what
I would cherish the most is that I did something with my life with the help from others. For
instance like the Family of The YMCA. That is why I am grateful today for all of the help that the
YMCA has given me.”

Dear YMCA Supporters,
2012 was a great year for the YMCA largely because of caring people like you. The YMCA of
Orange County is able to serve the community through programs that nurture the potential
of every child and teen, improve the nation’s health and well-being and give back by providing
support to our neighbors. Programs partnered with giving, compassionate and loving people
prove to be a successful formula every time.
Below highlights a few of the achievements our organization was able to accomplish thanks
to dedicated volunteers, staff and community support. Our hope and prayer is as the pages
ahead unfold you will celebrate a great year of impact and also be challenged to make a greater
difference in 2013.
In 2012, the YMCA of Orange County is proud to share a few key accomplishments
1. Strong fiscal stewardship to ensure the YMCA of Orange County will be here to serve the
community for many years to come
2. Enhanced program quality resulted in solid program growth serving more than 66,504 of our
neighbors
3. Provided $900,000 in financial assistance to over 2,000 local families in need of life
enriching programs
4. Committed focus on growth to serve more individuals, children and families in Orange County
resulted in a new health and wellness center in Huntington Beach
5. Proudly celebrated 125 years of changing lives in Orange County
It is with excitement that 2013 has begun with our Board of Directors committing resources to
hire a full time chaplain that will focus on our strong Christian roots and our efforts to continue
as an organization that cares for our members, staff and local community. We know that when we
work as one, we move people and communities forward.

Youth Development
We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. At the Y, children and teens
learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize
their potential.

Youth Sports - 4,420 served
Participation in organized sports provides
children with many opportunities to develop
motor skills, build self-esteem, and express
themselves – all vital building blocks for life!
CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE...
Youth Swim - 4,500 served
The Y has been teaching people to swim for
more than a century. We offer a variety of swim
programs for all ages that challenge and develop
participants in spirit, mind, and body.
Afterschool Care - 5,659 served
In a time when schools and families are cutting
back to basics, children, more than ever, need
the Y! Sports, homework support, exposure to
the arts, technology and time to have fun with
friends are just a few highlights!
Education & Leadership - 277 served
From preschool to college preparation, and
from art to civic engagement - we make sure
that every child and teen has an opportunity to
envision a positive future, and to take an active
role in strengthening the community.
Camp - 3,781 (Day Camp) &
469 (Resident Camp)
Through a variety of engaging activities and
the use of natural surroundings, YMCA camps
encourage participants to explore and develop
their interests and abilities in a safe and
nurturing environment.

OC. The basketball program was a great
experience for my son and he really
enjoyed playing at the YMCA. He really
liked his coach. I personally enjoyed
watching my son have fun and was
pleased with his coach because he was
always in communication with us as

instruction of George Corsam at the Detroit YMCA.

Healthy Living
We offer a welcoming and supportive environment. People of all ages and abilities can jump start their fitness,
enhance their training, meet new friends and reconnect with their inner-athlete. Whether you are just getting
started on the path to health or you are a seasoned athlete, we have something for you!
“I was 30 years old and realized that I was unable to walk one block without getting out of breath. My family
and I joined the local YMCA and began utilizing some of the great programs. I was in such poor physical
condition with asthma and a painful hip that I knew I could not participate in a regular aerobics class. I began
attending a shallow water aqua class with one if my friends. I liked the YMCA because I felt comfortable there,
in a family atmosphere. I never imagined that 17 years later I would not only work at the YMCA but teach group
exercise classes like Aqua Boot Camp, Silver Sneakers, Senior Fit, Silver Dance and be a certified personal
trainer with a love for my job. I still participate in the various programs. The YMCA has changed the way I view
fitness…fitness can be fun!”

In addition to our fitness programs, group
exercise classes and facilities, the Y provides
educational programs to promote healthier
decisions, youth programs to keep children
active and engaged, and many opportunities to
get involved, give back, and get connected.
Adult Sports & Recreation -

The YMCA of Orange County provides adults
with a variety of sports and recreation programs
that offer fun ways to stay active, get fit, and
explore new hobbies.
Family Time
Adventure Guides - 7,107 served
This program encourages parents and children
to spend valuable, quality time together through
camp outs, community service projects, and
other special activities.

Foundation, the Y is able to better reach
all residents of our community and
provided them with quality programs
they can fully participate in. The Y
provides the Arthritis Foundation with a
place in which they can send their clients
to help elevate pain in their daily life.”

“We are two retirees who have changed
our lives through our experience at
the Laguna Niguel YMCA. We recently
returned to So. Cal from a couple of
years out of state. We started with
Debbie’s class in the circuit room. Her
smiles and support and very positive
attitude kept us coming back and soon
we developed the regular habit of
exercise. Now we come regularly on our
own and are staying faithful. We love
the “family atmosphere” and the staff
who always have a friendly greeting
from the minute we walk in the door
to the bantering with Mark while we
are on the treadmill. Thank you all for

Social Responsibility
We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. That’s why we are committed
to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults, and families to give, join in and
advocate in the name of stronger communities. In 2012, $900,000 in financial aid assistance was given to
families in need.

Having the Y’s Afterschool
program has been immensely
helpful in assisting us with both
their physical and emotional
needs. The help the Y leaders
gave us helped them become the
successful people they are today.
My youngest son has severe
emotional and cognitive issues and
yet he is able to be successful with
the other kids at the Y. Because of
the financial help we have gotten at
the Y over the years, we have been
able to blend this family together
as one.”

helped when needed. Clare
helped me out especially this
week. I have some unexpected
expenses that would have
prevented me from utilizing
the child care facilities. When
I shared this with Clare, she

a personal membership with
child care included. It allowed
me to continue to be a member
while also being able to take
care of some expenses I had
not anticipated. I feel proud to
belong to an organization that
places such high values on its
members and am exceedingly

Community Services - 333 served
YMCA Community Services provides essential
support for the most overlooked members of
our community, delivering unique programs and
services to youth and adults with developmental
disabilities and foster care youth and families.
Volunteerism & Giving -

It all starts with our community! Volunteers
and donors make it possible for the Y to change
lives. Our volunteers contribute by mentoring
kids, coaching sports, serving as camp
counselors and tutors, raising valuable funding,
and much more.

Sumner Dudley, a Y volunteer from New Jersey, took
a group of boys camping to Orange Lake Newburgh,
New York. He would later be called “father of YMCA
camping.”

Facilitators and the program have changed
my daughter’s life. I’m not lightly saying this
- my daughter has made actual friends, and
the Y support team. . .it has all been a great
