Auguste Renoir 1841-1919
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges on
25/02/1841.1845 the family moved to Paris.From
1854, Renoir makes an apprenticeship as a
porcelain painter. 1862-64 he attended the Ecole
des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Charles Gleyre,
where he met Frédéric Bazille, Claude Monet,
Alfred Sisley. In 1864 he exhibits at the Salon.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir turns in the 1860s under the influence of
Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon painters of plein air painting.
He is influenced by Gustave Courbet and Eugène Delacroix.
Around 1870 he developed together with Claude Monet and
other painters the new impressionist style of painting and is
considered one of the main exponents of this art. Pierre-
Auguste Renoir took part in the first three group exhibitions of
the Impressionists. Then he returned back to the conventional
salon because of his financial situation.However, the
continuous art purchases by the art dealer Durand-Ruel
improve his situation.
1881-82 Pierre-Auguste Renoir traveled on three major trips to
Algeria and Italy. His painting style changed in the early 1880s,
from Impressionism towards a form of consolidation with more
pronounced contours and plastic modeling of the physical.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s work included, above all, figure
paintings, primarily women, with soft characteristic, sweet
shapes and colors, a lot in his formal language is reminiscent of
the Rococo painting.

1885 Renoir married Aline Charigot and devoted himself
especially after the birth of his sons in numerous works
depicting the family, including paintings, pastels and drawings,
and later sculptures. Around 1890 the artist was widely
accepted and successful.
In 1898, Renoir began to suffer from gout, which made it
difficult for him to work. He lived from 1899 often in hot and dry
south of France, since 1905 he lived permanently in Cagnes. In
1904 his first retrospective exhibition was organized in Paris
Autumn Salon. From 1907 Pierre-Auguste Renoir developed
his sculptural work, which he made through the mediation of
Ambroise Vollard using the help of the Maillol pupil Richard
Guino.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir died on December 3, 1919 in Cagnessur-Mer.
