Carl Spitzweg 1808-1885
Franz Carl Spitzweg, is regarded as the painter of
the Biedermeier period, who embodied the spirit of
the ascending Germany of the 19th century at its
purest. But the son of a wealthy merchant family
Bavaria was not intended a career as a painter.
Although his artistic talent was recognized during
his school days, his father had other plans and
certain for him a career as a pharmacist. As a dutiful son, who
had already lost his mother early, he followed the wishes of his
father. He began an apprenticeship in 1825 at the Royal
Bavarian Court Pharmacy in Munich. Then he studied
pharmacy, botany and chemistry at the University of Munich
and graduated in 1832 with honors. He worked until 1833 as
pharmacists, but was not very happy.
After an illness and also the quite early death of his father, he
decided to try it as a painter.
In 1835 he was a member of the Munich art club. He never
attended an academy and has always been self-taught. He
always remained faithful to the principle Biedermeier style in his
work, but his later work also includes elements of
Impressionism.
He died at the age of 77 years at a stroke. He was found
leaning back in his chair in his Munich apartment. His grave can
be visited on the Old South Cemetery in Munich
Glockenbacharea.
