President’s Message
September 2010
Karen Black
CCTC President
Hello Everyone,
I hope you have all had a nice
summer and were able to
spend lots of time outdoors
enjoying the sunshine with
your Cotons. Certainly in
Ontario the weather was far
nicer than it was the previous
summer, though the summer
did seem to come to an abrupt
end with Labour Day!
Just as a couple of reminders,
the specialty show is in
October in Nova Scotia, and
the annual general meeting will
be held on Saturday,
November 19 th , in conjunction
with the UKC shows in
Brampton, Ontario. This is an
election year. Further
information will follow in an
email.
As many of you know, a DNA
test for Banderas recently
became available. While
initially it was being offered as
a swab test, in the end the
results garnered from the
swabs were unreliable and the
University of Missouri is able to
run the tests only from blood
samples. I have tested all of
my dogs and am happy to
know that all of my dogs have
tested normal with no carriers.
If anyone requires further
information about the test or its
procedures, please feel free to
contact me at
karen@cotonwind.com.
I hope to see many of you at
the AGM. In the meantime,
have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Meet Our New Member
Monica Madjarow & Her Coton, Annie
The Coton Malgache Volume 10 Issue 3
Annie came to me from Polana Kennel on May 2, 2010. We
had kind of picked each other as when she was 4 weeks
old she decided to suckle on my nose and then barked when
we put her back down with the other puppies. I don't know
whether she remembered me but when I went back for the
final decision between the two females she started kissing
me and wagging her tail. So that was that!
She is the friendliest, most fearless little Coton. She has not
met a dog, person, child, or noisy item that she does not like
or is curious about. They call her "The Walmart Greeter"
down on the waterfront where we regularly go to walk. She
knows "stay"and "come"and "sit" and can easily be let off
leash to play and play and play with the other dogs. Annie
has become somewhat of a little legend down there.
I was worried about her not being very affectionate the first
few months but now when I say "kisses and cuddles" she
takes a running leap for my lap and gives me kisses although
she rarely stays up for long.
I love my little “Annie Bannanie” and am grateful to Marie-France, Dream and Mia for producing such a welladjusted
puppy girl! A special thanks as well to Ed, Bev and Sarah Anne Wood for their wisdom and advice
and especially Snowball whose looks and disposition first inspired me to get a Coton.
I live in Bedford, Nova Scotia a short walk down to the waterfront park. I am 61 years old and work part-time
as a Medical Market Researcher (I interview Doctors on new drugs in development to see how they may or
may not use them.). So I work from home and Annie is hardly ever alone.
I have had 2 Malteses over the years. When Mollie Two died I was dog-free for a few years but during this
time my mother who still lived in Toronto started to decline in health, eventually had a stroke and ended up in
a nursing home with vascular dementia. (I am what they call down here a CFAW- a come from awayer.) I was
commuting back and forth to Toronto to help look after my mother with my sister who still lives there.
Between the two of us we practically lived in the nursing home with her so she wouldn't be alone. She died last
December at 86 years of age.
In March I decided to get another dog. Over the last 2 years, I had been talking to a neighbour who had what I
thought was a big Maltese. But no, he said Snowball was a Coton de Tulear. I had never heard of them. I had
been thinking of getting another Maltese but breeders seem to be producing these little teacup sizes and I
wanted a Maltese the size I had before. I had talked to Marie-France when I first met the neighbour's Coton
and I called her again and sent her a deposit and waited for Annie. Her name is Anna de Domaine Polana as
my mom's middle name was Anna. (I couldn't name her Irmgard which was her first name!) and Marie-
France let me take her home on May 2nd which is my mother's birthday and now May 2nd will always be a
day of sadness but happiness too - a bittersweet day.

LIFE AT ‘WHITE PEARL COTONS’ ...
By Lorna Christie, White Rock, British Columbia
The Spring 2010 issue of Coton Malgache published my
article ‘From One Pearl to Another’ … and now in the Fall
issue I follow-up by bringing to you what life at our home has
been like since then … the home of ‘WHITE PEARL
COTONS.’
They say that Spring is a time when things come back to life
again … a time of new beginnings in many ways … well, this
surely happened in our home in quite a surprising new way.
It was the middle of March and we were in the aftermath of
the 2010 Olympics which had brought with it lots of
excitement and business to our bed and breakfast. We operate Kent Manor Guest House, an internationally
patronized bed and breakfast. In the midst of all this Olympic aftermath I sensed that something else was
happening around our home and very soon it was unveiled. I had a birthday surprise from my husband. I was
flying to Belgium to receive my birthday gift: a beautiful female Coton. This all happened within a few days,
totally opposite to what I had really wanted or planned, but then, isn’t that how a lot of things happen

Page 5
The Coton Malgache Volume10
Again, as how Kintana du Domaine de Polana came into our lives the previous year, this too was divinely
ordained. My dear husband, Richard, had liaised with Helene at the Swift Coton in Belgium and found out
that she had a litter of puppies ready to go to their new homes by the end of March and “yes!” she did have a
couple of show/breed potential females. The tickets were there, the email with the pictures of the puppies was
there for me to decide which female I felt met the Coton ‘standards’ (at that young an age!) and I had to
decide. So, I made my choice and to confirm my choice I sent Marie-France of Polana Kennels an email with
the pictures, asking her what she thought. Her response to me was: “Well, which one do you pick” (a typical
response from her – she wants YOU to do the thinking and learning), so I told her which one and she said,
“You are correct!”. Great! Decision made. The alphabetical letter given by the Belgium Canine Registry was
‘J’! We named her JEWELA of the Swift Coton. Helene was very happy and in a day’s time I was off and
away to Belgium.
I had emailed the Swift Coton asking for updated pictures of JEWELA before I left, however, nothing came. I
realized upon arrival in Belgium why they had not. There, waiting for me at the Belgium Airport was Helene
with our darling JEWELA! I had told Helene I was wearing black and red. JEWELA was there to meet me
with a red ribbon and bow around her neck, her pearly white hair and beautiful black nose and Helene with a
big sign saying: ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LORNA!” You see, I arrived in Belgium on March 25 th – my
birthday! What a gift! Another ‘pearl’ to add to the pearl we already had! I hope you can appreciate how
embarrassed I was at the Airport: all those disembarking and those waiting to greet the arrivals joined Helene
in singing ‘Happy Birthday Lorna!’ … to those who know me, they
do know that I too blush, in spite of my tan complexion … you see,
I blush in my eyes! I am a people-person and outgoing, however, I
do get VERY shy when the limelight is on me … believe me, I do.
The trip to the Swift Coton residence was a lovely one … I was
hugging JEWELA and bonding with her, feeling like I was in a
make-believe world, and then chatting with Helene and her family
friendGroomer Gerard, and taking in the sights of Belgium enroute
to Ghent. What a lovely home and … all those Cotons. I got to
meet JEWELA’s brother, ‘Jackpot’, her mother, father and the rest
of the Coton family and had a tour of their residence/kennel and lots
of Coton birthday hugs and kisses! Wow! This was real – not a
dream.
The day ended with a birthday celebration: I was taken out to a
lovely restaurant and we had a delicious Belgian meal followed with
a birthday cake and, yes, another Happy Birthday song and blowing
out the candles! What a beautiful surprise and treat … what had I
done to deserve this!
The next day came yet another birthday surprise … I was to
accompany Helene and Girard to a big dog show in Luxembourg
that coming weekend – unfortunately Christien, Helene’s husband
could not join us as he was busy painting their daughter’s new
home. (I was staying in Belgium for 6 days and this was part of the
reason.).
What a beautiful drive we had in their R.V., staying overnight.
What an awesome experience at the Luxembourg Dog Show… so

The Coton Malgache Volume10 Issue3
Page 6
many Cotons, 30 in all, from various parts of Europe and from different renowned breeders. I was able to
meet some of these breeders too. And to experience the comraderie of the breeders, in spite of and despite
which Coton won … you see, this was all about having fun with their Cotons in the ring and fun and joy in
celebrating the Cotons and each other … Yes! this is what I would love to see in Canada too was what rang
through my heart. I was literally weeping
Lorna (above) and Helene (right) celebrating at the
Luxemborg show
opportunity. Thank you, Richard, too!
with joy and thanks to God for this wonderful gift and
And then, after 6 days, JEWELA and I were enroute to Canada I met a friend from Chicago with her husband
at the airport in Belgium and both of us could not believe what a blessing that was … so it was nice to catch-up
on things and move on. Another blessing!
To welcome JEWELA and I at the Vancouver International Airport were Richard and KINTANA. Now, what
we saw and experienced was so beautiful that only our hearts could capture and hold onto the picture and
experience. JEWELA, who was so quiet the entire trip to her new home looked at KINTANA and gave a soft
growl (which we have now have learned is her way of saying: What’s this)… and then, KINTANA just
leaned forwards and gave her a kiss on her nose – it was ‘love at first sight’ … and then they romanced that
first week at our home … it was like we did not exist, they were in their own little world – just so beautiful.
Yes! we had made the right decision – KINTANA now had a companion and friend.
After a week, KINTANA felt the time had come to let JEWELA know that he was #1 in the home … #1
meaning that he had been there before her. He wanted to be the one who was right up against our bodies, be it
if we were sitting, lying down, walking or whatever. However, JEWELA knew that she could snuggle up to us
too as when KINTANA wanted to go to his crate at night and jumped off the bed, she became #1 and snuggled
up to us … she is one who would sleep in your bed all night and day if you allowed her to – totally opposite to
KINTANA – he loves his space.
Now JEWELA is 8 months old and KINTANA is 18 months old and she will be making her debut in the dog
show ring the weekend of October 9/10 in Truro, Nova Scotia …where KINTANA hails from, and then
joining him for the Coton National Specialty the following weekend in Windsor N.S. where the CFC All-breed
Dog Show is also being held – this is where KINTANA made his debut last year, too! There are no coincidences
… only divinely orchestrated God-incidences!
So, off to Nova Scotia we all go – leaving Vancouver on the ‘red-eye’ flight on October 6 th , returning October
20 th and then a week later we will be at Canada’s largest Dog Show: the ‘Travel the World Dog Show’ at the
Tradex Centre in Abbotsford, B.C. We are eager to see what happens there … last year KINTANA had the

Happy Birthday,
Lorna!

Meet the Toy Breeds
Submitted by Joanne Mouryas
A fun time was had by all two and four legged
friends at Meet the Toy Breeds held on August 14th and 15th at
Pawsway in beautiful downtown Toronto. Representing the Coton De Tulear were members of
Payzac Kennel. Papa Bronson was present along with his older daughter Princess and three four
month old pups named Henry, Matilda and Gertrude. Many people came by to meet and pet the
dogs/pups and were surprised as to how calm everyone was including the younger ones. Every two
hours each breeder along with the dogs was called to the center of the room and was given the
opportunity to tell the audience a little about their breed. Questions were asked and answered and
the dogs/pups were paraded around the room. Many people that came to the show had never
heard of a Coton before and others were familiar with the
breed but had never met one in person. There were
many "oohs" and "aahs" and "how cute are they", etc. A
short history on the Coton along with the breed standard
was available for those people that wanted to learn more
about the breed. Everyone was very tired by the end of
the show, but overall it was a very enjoyable weekend.

Coco & Reeses
Submitted by Joanne Mouryas
The Coton Malgache Volume10 Issue3
Our girl is in love……... 3 months ago, my son rescued from the shelter a 2 year old rotweiller lab mix. The guy is
huge. He weighs 120 lbs and he is very handsome. ...Ya, I know what you are thinking We had the same reaction
also, but what can you do Kids will be kids! Anyway, she bonded immediately with the bum and she cannot get
enough of him. Every time we tell her we are going to visit Reeses (that’s his name) she gets all excited and can’t wait
to get there. They play together for hours. She follows him everywhere. They kiss all the time and it is just amazing to
see them together. She has lost interest in all other dogs and will barely acknowledge them when we take her out for a
walk. The one good thing that came from this strange relationship is that our girl who was very finnicky when it came
to food and could hold off eating for days if she did not get her way, now that she has seen that “piglet” eat and drink,
she will eat just about anything…..go figure We will soon send you some pictures of this strange combination.
Coco understands absolutely everything we tell her and can anticipate in advance what we will do next. For example,
when we need to go out and she has to stay behind, she will gather up her stuff around the house and take it with her
to her pen. When it’s time to clean her eyes, she will go in the washroom and lay on the carpet all by herself until Lucie
comes and takes care of her. We have a little box with her grooming stuff in the living room and when it’s grooming
time and we take the box out, she will jump on her little ottoman and lie down for us, turn on her back and just stay
there until we are done. She will not touch any of our stuff. If we drop something on the floor, she will sit beside it and
growl until we pick it up. Another good thing is that when we go out, she pees and poops on command and she will
not do it until we tell her where and when to go. She is also responding very well to hand signals and you should see
the reaction of people when we take the elevator in the building and she will sit or lay down immediately just with a
little signal of the hand. She does a full house inspection every morning when we get up and will come back to us only
after she is done inspecting every single corner of every room in the house. She will track down and catch any fly that
dares enter the house. She has many toys and will fetch them by name, the monkey, the ball, the squid, the lobster,
the puppy, the bee etc….
You know we did a lot of
research before we decided
to adopt to make sure we
found the right breed that
would make a good fit with
us and when we “discovered”
the Coton, we never
imagined that such a small
“bundle” could make such a
big difference in our lives, to
give so much satisfaction,
help us through the hard
times, make us laugh so hard
and bring so much joy. She is
very “Precious” to us and I
don’t know how you pick the
names to start with, but you
were so right with this one….
Pierre and Lucie
