The Coton Malgache
September 2011
Welcome to the beautiful fall days, my favourite time of the year. I hope that your summer
went well, and that you are enjoying your Cotons as much as we are.
Our specialty has come and gone, attended by spectators from as far away as British
Columbia. Please find an article written by Marie France Prayal on the details. I did miss the
specialty, I was on vacation in Italy with my sisters. Strolling around the streets of Rome I
was thankfull to see little white Cotons, and even managed to pet a couple of them and
communicate in broken Italian that I have Cotons and that I was from Canada.
Unfortunately the one picture I manage to capture of a happy Coton owner and I did not turn
out well.
We will be setting the date shortly for our annual
genneral meeting, and I will email everyone on the
details. I would also like to thank Paul Cote for his
short tenure as our secretary, and if anyone can help out
we would be pleased to have you onboard. We will be
uploading a new web site shortly for our club, and we
would welcome your comments, we will let you know
when it is up and ready to be viewed.
Happy raking, Barbara Canduro and the crazy Cotons
from
CCTC “Summer Fun” Photo Contest
And the Winner is...
The winner of our “Summer Fun” photo contest is Diane Benaroch of British Columbia. Congratulations to
Diane who wins a free membership to the Canadian Coton de Tulear Club for 2012. The photographs were
judged by five friends and family members of mine. The photographs were identified by numbers only. The
judges were asked to rank their first 3 choices giving consideration to overall photo quality and relevance to
the contest theme of “summer fun.”
Points were given for the rankings. Diane’s photo above was a clear winner ranked first by three judges and
second by another judge. One judge described it as an “obvious first choice” given the theme of summer fun;
another said, “Who could not find joy in their unbridled enthusiasm?” Another judge commented on the
beautiful composition, “the arc of the dogs running across the photo, the single chair to balance; freedom and
happiness personified.” Diane’s title for the photo? What else, but “Having fun.”
After our first place photo, the voting was very close for the runners-up. We had a total of 16 photographs
entered. Thank you to all of our contestants for a wonderful variety of pictures. Enjoy some of the entries on
the next pages.
I would like to say a special “thank you’ to our judges… Malvene Lemerick, Arvena Tokarek, and Gail
Gleason (all of Vancouver), Pat Wasylishyn of Elliot Lake, Ontario, and Janice Crossman of Ottawa.

Domaine de Polana Coton Party
Submitted by the Domaine de Polana Cotons
A great Domaine de Polana “Summer Coton
Party!”
From a Coton’s perspective……
Once again, we held another great picnic last
month at the Domaine de Polana! Everything went
so smoothly and without a hitch. We Cotons ( 24
Cotons of us from Nova Scotia) were quite proud of
our efforts to keep our “owners”( around 50 of
them) busy and congratulated ourselves on how
well they behaved!
The seminar given by Barb about our grooming was
a great success. Hopefully, our lovely owners understood how to take care of our hair without putting up with
too many mats…
Even the downpour, which started as soon as we all found a nice spot under the trees, didn’t stop us as we
quickly found shelter on the veranda.
Thanks to all for letting us taste all that wonderful food, some of which occasionally hit the ground. It was
delicious!
Looking very much forward to another get together in the near future!
WORLD DOG SHOW – PARIS – JULY 2011
Submitted by Marie-France Prayal
Marie France, Dream, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Let me introduce you to DREAM, my 2 year old Coton de
Tuléar from the Domaine de Polana. He has been a constant
performer in the ring and do we ever make a great team!
The moment he enters the ring, he goes into SHOW MODE
and knows exactly what to do, and me, well I just follow
him. Our show experience has been limited to regional
shows organized by CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) and CCF
(Canadian Canine Federation).
Last year, I picked up on an ad for the World Dog Show
being held in July 2011. And because of his very good show
results, I said to myself, why not register Dream for this
Show! This opportunity would give me the chance to meet
other breeders from around the world and have Dream
judged at an international level.
By November 2010, he was registered in the Open Category,
airfare and in‐cabin reservation paid and hotel booked.
There was also the opportunity to register him for the
French championship; so why not! Let the adventure begin!
On top of that, Lorna Christie wanted to go and suggested
we go together and share the experience. It always seems a
little bit risky to take on something to far into the future and
we were almost caught ...
By March, for some reason, Dream’s coat had changed and I
was so disappointed that I found I didn’t have the courage
to show him. In spite of it, I continued to take him to the
CKC shows where he did very well. I was thinking that it was
perhaps me who was being too critical. Or perhaps I was
looking for an excuse not to go? I did finally decide to go but
only as a spectator!
Perhaps Dream felt all this turmoil and said to himself that he really wanted to go with me. A couple of weeks before the
departure date, his coat came back to normal and so I decided to take him with me after all!
We headed out on July 5th to meet up with Lorna in Montreal. Everything went off without a hitch. The Hotel was only 4km
from the Paris airport. Shuttle buses regularly ran between the airport and the hotel. As we discovered we weren’t the only
ones to pick this spot. There were dogs everywhere: little ones, big ones, everyone attempting to communicate with varying
levels of success. But with the help of the ever present canine camaraderie, we all managed to understand each other and get
along.
Thursday, Lorna and I decided to go and explore the dog show site. What a great idea! More than 80 show rings in two different
buildings, with more than 37,000 registered dogs in the World Competition! Finding all the information we needed, we left for
the Hotel after visiting a few of the more interesting vendor kiosks.
Saturday we were finally ready for the France National Championship. Accompanied by Bev Kohler, an American breeder and
her friend Carole, we head for the exhibition site to find a place ring‐side. There is a tidal wave of Cotons! More than 100 were
to be shown. Dream, in his usual manner, presented very well and qualified as Excellent. I was very happy with this result.

After the competition, we were invited to share a lovely buffet and empty a few glasses of wine and bubbly. With light hearts,
we returned to the hotel for some well‐ deserved rest. We had been, since our arrival, dining at a very good dog friendly
restaurant located a few blocks from the hotel. What a treat it is to enjoy a meal with Dream contentedly snoozing in his cage
or under my chair! And he is not alone. This restaurant is often host to dogs of all breeds and sizes, all on their best behaviour!
Incredible!
And here comes Sunday, the Cotons’ World competition. Madame Jeanette Larive is our Judge, 120 Cotons are registered, of
which 20 are in the same class as Dream. Our class is called to the ring. Given the number of competitors, Mme Larive divides
the group in two. We are part of the second group. After examining the dogs one by one, she makes us come back to the ring
for the first selection of 10 dogs. And Dream is selected! My stomach is fluttering with excitement! Now it’s back into the ring
for the second selection. The group will be downsized to 6... And again, Dream is selected! My stomach no longer fluttering
but lurching with anticipation! When all is said and done, he places 4 th in his class! This is very satisfying results for a first
experience at an international level. Quality is there! To have been chosen amongst the best in his class, he must be a very
good representative of the breed!
We decide on an early departure in order to enjoy a quick visit to Paris. Dogs in tow, Bev, Lorna, Carole and I share a taxi to the
center of Paris. We take immense pleasure walking around this splendid city and to share with our dogs a delicious meal at a
very quaint bistro.
Alas, time to head home, though with a very positive experience to look back on! A very heartfelt and warm thanks go out to
Lorna for her help and support, as well to Bev, and Carole for the camaraderie. So long for now and till our next meeting
perhaps in a year’s time at another World event, this time in
Dream places 4th out of 20 Cotons in his class.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Lorna Christie, Marie-France, Bev Kohler, & Carol enjoy
dining at a dog friendly bistro in Paris.

In this issue we conclude our “Meet the 2011—2012 CCTC Board” series with Joanne Mouryas
My love affair with the Coton de Tulear began more than six and a half years ago when I met my sister's Coton
'Lola'. Prior to this time I had never heard of the breed let along met such a beautiful little fluff ball. I started
researching the breed and the more I read, the more enthralled I became. I decided that this would be the dog
for me. When I was younger and living in England my friend would bring her puppy Corgis for me to play
with. I had always wanted a little male Corgi until I met Lola.
I started researching
breeders as I wanted to buy
a puppy from a reputable
breeder so he could live a
long and healthy life. He
was going to be my little
spoiled pet. As fate would
have it, my little male turned
out to be a show prospect
puppy. I went all the way to
Spain to meet my little
fellow and bring him back
with me to his new
home. While in Spain, a
little female became
available and after meeting
her, it was love at first
sight. My little boy Caton
would now have a friend to
travel with him in his crate
and also to play with him
when we returned
home. My two Cotons gave
me so much love and joy
that I wanted to be able to
pass this to other
families. This is the reason
that I become a
breeder. Showing and
raising Cotons is very tiring,
but also very rewarding. I
hope that through DNA
testing and selective
breeding we are able to
continue this wonderful
breed.
