<strong>ROAD</strong> <strong>MAINTENANCE</strong> <strong>WORKER</strong><br />
FUNCTION<br />
This is journey level work involved in the operation of medium equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of<br />
county-maintained roads and property.<br />
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<br />
This is the journey level class in the Road Maintenance Worker series. Appointment to this level requires that the incumbent be<br />
performing the full range of duties and meet the qualification standards for the class with the operation of medium equipment.<br />
Incumbents may receive additional training in the operation of heavy equipment. And as incumbents attain and demonstrate<br />
qualifications, the incumbents may be periodically required to operate heavy equipment.<br />
SUPERVISION RECEIVED<br />
Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level of authority.<br />

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS<br />
1. Performs a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair tasks by performing various manual labor assignments,<br />
such as, but not limited to: operating jackhammer, drilling holes in rocks, shoveling of cake, raking chips, chip sealing,<br />
patching, oiling, sweeping, trimming trees, weeding, mowing, removing debris, installing cattle guards, placing of barricades<br />
and cones, and flagging of traffic.<br />
2. Utilizes various hand and power tools and equipment such as: jackhammer/compressors, drills, chain saw, mower, shovel,<br />
rake, and weed eater.<br />
3. Operates and services medium equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and to haul<br />
materials and equipment. Utilizes equipment such as: tandem axle truck; all front end loaders; all rollers; all sweepers;<br />
rough dozer, blade, and scraper; push cat; and other related medium equipment.<br />
4. As required, operates and services light equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads. Utilizes<br />
equipment such as: single axle truck; tractor/mower; sweeper; rubber tire roller; jack hammer; hand tools; and other related<br />
light equipment.<br />
5. May receive additional training on operating and servicing of heavy equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair<br />
of roads. May be periodically assigned to operate and service heavy equipment upon attaining and demonstrating ability to<br />
perform assignment. May receive training on any or all of the following: backhoe; screening plant; finish scraper, dozer,<br />
and blade; chip spreader; tractor/trailer; remote blades; water truck; bituminous distributor; laydown machine; or any other<br />
related heavy equipment.<br />
6. As required, utilizes equipment to perform work assignments as required, such as, but not limited to: sweeping road/street,<br />
watering road, cleaning and installing culverts, rolling asphalt, loading trucks, hauling heavy equipment and materials.<br />
7. Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments.<br />
8. Cleans, maintains and services required equipment and tools used during performance of work assignments.<br />
9. Performs related work as required.<br />
WORK CONTACTS<br />
Regular contact with associate personnel and infrequent contact with general public to answer inquiries.<br />
CONDITIONS OF WORK<br />
Work is subject to varying post or job site assignments and may be subject to call-back, on-call status and overtime and irregular<br />
schedules including completion of work assignments on weekends and holidays. Work is also subject to traveling and<br />
performing work assignments in outlying or remote areas of the County involving exposure to varying weather conditions which<br />
includes safe operation of vehicles/equipment, hand and power tools and performance of moderate to strenuous manual labor in<br />
extreme hot and cold temperatures with exposure to exhaust and chemical fumes, oil, grease and hazardous materials.<br />
Involves occasional - frequent moderate lifting of 25 - 50 lbs.<br />
All employees of Mohave County are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security<br />
occurs. All employees are considered to be available for these types of events and will immediately respond, in accordance with<br />
Road Maintenance Worker.doc Page 1
County Emergency Operations Plan, when directed by the Chairman of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, County<br />
Manager, the Homeland Security/Emergency Management Coordinator, or when directed by their department director/elected<br />
official and/or immediate supervisor. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities assigned to their regular job<br />
responsibilities and incorporate other non job related duties as necessary and required of an employee to respond to the<br />
emergent matter at hand. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over a<br />
possibility of an extended period of time with infrequent breaks or rest periods. An employee who is working with an<br />
accommodation must meet with their supervisor and department director/elected official to discuss their requirement for<br />
response.<br />

of equipment.<br />
--use and care of equipment, tools, and materials used in road construction, maintenance and repair activities.<br />
--safe and effective operation and servicing of light and medium equipment: Medium equipment shall be considered as<br />
tandem axle truck; all front end loaders; all rollers; all sweepers; rough dozer, blade and scraper; push cat; and other<br />
related medium equipment; and light equipment shall be considered as single axle truck; tractor/mower; sweeper;<br />
rubber tire roller; jack hammer; hand tools; and other related light equipment.<br />
--effectively service, maintain and operate equipment in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures.<br />
--fulfill physical requirements of work assignments to include occasional - frequent moderate lifting of 25 - 50 pounds<br />
and operating equipment and performing manual labor in extreme hot or cold temperatures.<br />
--establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel.<br />
--understand and follow, quickly and accurately, oral and written instructions.<br />
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING<br />
One (1) year actual operating experience of medium equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads as<br />
a Road Maintenance Helper, or when filled from outside, one (1) year of actual operating experience as a Road Maintenance<br />
Worker or related field involving the operation of medium equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of<br />
roads, streets and property. OR an equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the desired<br />
knowledge, skills and abilities.<br />
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT<br />
Must possess the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with Tanker endorsement within six months of<br />
appointment to the position. Must provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.<br />
