2012 -2013 High School Profile
School and Community Background
The American International School of Abuja (AISA) is a co-educational
international day school for English-speaking students in grades pre-school to 12.
Located in Nigeria’s capital city, AISA was founded in 1993. The school year runs
from August to June, with 180 student contact days. As of August 29, 2012, we have
478 students, PS-12, with 152 in the secondary division. AISA has a diverse International
population with students from approximately 34 different Countries.
AISA is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Schools and offers an American curriculum based on U.S. standards. Grade 12 was
added in the 2008-2009 school year, and we graduated our first senior class of four in
June 2009. In June of 2013, we expect to graduate 10 students. We are a college
preparatory institution with the goal of preparing our students for admission into the
best universities in the world. There are 20 faculty members in the secondary school
of which eight are trained to teach the Advanced Placement program
In August 2006, the school opened in a brand-new facility located in the
Durumi district. In addition to classrooms, the facility includes a science lab, two
computer labs, a library and media center, and an art and music building. The recreational
and athletic facilities include a multi-purpose hall, basketball court, swimming
pool, outdoor soccer field, and track.
Students excelling in academics are awarded three levels of recognition:
Honor’s Roll, Principal’s Honor Roll or Director’s Honor Roll, with the Director’s
Honor Roll being the highest. The school also hosts a chapter of the National Honor
Society (NHS), in which eligible students are inducted every year. NHS along with
AISA’s Student Council allow students to develop their leadership skills.
AISA offers to its students several activities, including athletics (volleyball,
basketball, soccer and swimming), a very active student council, and two community
service clubs. Students in athletics have the opportunity to compete in the West African
International Schools Activities League. Students interested in the visual and
performing arts are able to explore these through our academic offerings and extracurricular
annual musical production and art show. Activities and athletics are
staffed primarily by AISA teachers and are supervised by an Activities Coordinator
and an Athletics Director. Students in the high school are encouraged to balance their
academic responsibilities with these extra-curricular opportunities.
Grading System
The secondary school at AISA communicates student achievement using a criteriareferenced
reporting system. Grades are reported based on student achievement
against skill, knowledge, and performance standards.
