RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
5/2009-Present Dissertation Research
“Implicit Stigma of Mental Illness: Attitudes in an Evidence-Based
Practice”
Chair: John H. McGrew, Ph.D.
The purpose of the study is to examine the explicit and implicit stigmatizing attitudes among assertive
community treatment staff, an evidence-based practice that may or may not facilitate recovery.
Secondarily, I will explore the extent to which explicit and implicit stigma predict organizational
outcomes (discriminatory processes and staff performance). I anticipate completing data collection by
March of 2009 and defending by July of 2009.
5/2007-present Research Assistant ACT Center of Indiana
Supervisor: Michelle P. Salyers, Ph.D.
My research examined evidence-based practices in individuals with severe mental illness with a
particular emphasis on implementation and outcomes. I was project manager for an NIMH-funded
pilot study (described below), assisted with two additional projects (described below), and performed
supportive tasks such as IRB submission and data analysis on additional projects. Additionally, I have

performed program fidelity assessments on Assertive Community Treatment and Illness Management
and Recovery.
IP-RISP Pilot #1: Recovery-Oriented Assertive Community Treatment (ACT). This project is the first
pilot study of an NIMH-funded interventions and practice and research infrastructure (IP-RISP) grant
awarded to the ACT Center of Indiana to examine recovery oriented ACT. As manager of this project,
I coordinated a total of 24 visits to four assertive community treatment teams in Indiana and assisted in
the collection of quantitative and qualitative data. I also supervised data entry personnel and coded,
cleaned, and analyzed data.
Randomized Controlled Trial of IMR in the VA. This project is funded by the Veteran’s
Administration to examine the effectiveness of the Illness Management and Recovery (IMR)
curriculum for persons with schizophrenia in a randomized controlled trial. As part of this project, I
have co-lead IMR groups in the VA and I have assisted with baseline Structured Clinical Interviews
for DSM-IV Disorders (SCID) to confirm diagnoses of schizophrenia. I have also helped develop and
apply a protocol for examining treatment adherence to the IMR curriculum.
A Comparison of Phone-Based and Onsite-Based Fidelity for Assertive Community Treatment. This
project is examining the association between phone administered and onsite administered fidelity
assessments. As manager of this project, I am coordinating phone calls with all 31 ACT teams in
Indiana. I am also conducting phone-based fidelity assessments using the Dartmouth Assertive
Community Treatment Scale (DACTS) and recording, cleaning, and analyzing data.
3/2007-4/2009 Masters Thesis Research
“Staff and Consumer Perspectives on Defining Treatment Success and
Failure in Assertive Community Treatment”
Chair: John H. McGrew, Ph.D.
This study was a qualitative examination of assertive community treatment staff and consumer
understandings of treatment success and failure and the processes that underlie them. The purpose was
to 1) understand how ACT consumers and staff define and describe the processes impacting treatment
success and failure and 2) examine whether definitions varied as a function of perspective (staff vs.
consumer), overall agency culture (high vs. low recovery-oriented teams), and individual differences
(optimism).
5/2007-9/2007 Research Assistant IUPUI Department of Psychology
Supervisor: John H. McGrew, Ph.D.
Indiana Integrated Dual Diagnosis Capability. Coded, cleaned, and analyzed data for an Indiana
Division of Mental Health and Addiction survey on the capability of Indiana addiction programs to
provide services to individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders.
8/2005-5/2006 Undergraduate Research Project
“Changing the Attitudes of College Students Regarding Mental Illness”
Anderson University, Department of Psychology
Supervisor: Curtis K. Leech, Ph.D.
Proposed, designed, conducted, and presented an original research project.
