A proverb is a short<br />
statement of a general truth,<br />
one that contains some common wisdom<br />
or advice. It is often a shared wisdom<br />
that crosses boundaries of language and<br />
culture. As defined by novelist and author<br />
of Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes,<br />
"A proverb is a short sentence based on<br />
long experience." Some label proverbs<br />
simply as old folk wisdom. Many proverbs<br />
rely on anti<strong>the</strong>sis: "Out of sight, out of<br />
mind," "Penny wise, pound foolish,"<br />
"A bird in <strong>the</strong> hand is worth two in <strong>the</strong><br />
bush,” or in Slovenian: Narava nas uči<br />
govoriti, pamet molčati. (Nature teaches<br />
us to talk; wisdom to be silent); Noč svetuje,<br />
dan oblikuje. (The night advises, <strong>the</strong> day shapes<br />
meaning: The night is <strong>for</strong> thinking, <strong>the</strong> day is <strong>for</strong> acting).<br />
