the war hut also to continue as a<br />
beneficent inlluence in the post-war<br />
world. One of the moist sipnificant<br />
is the development of a new force<br />
in education—the bi-oad. versatile,<br />
and flexible training proprams lieinp<br />
conducted by American industry.<br />
Enpendered by the desperate<br />
need for skilled production jiersonnel,<br />
this hiphly constructive ofT-<br />
.'jprinp of the manpower problem is<br />
f.'isentially a complement and not a<br />
competitor of the more formal prc>prums<br />
of technical traininp and liberal<br />
education offered by this country's<br />
institutions of learninp.<br />
The 8coi)e of the traininp and education<br />
propram of the RCA Victor<br />
Division is exemiflified by activities<br />
at the Camden, N. J. plant where<br />
about 18,000 employees in the last<br />
three years have received specialized<br />
traininp throuph a variety of<br />
orpanized courses ranpinp from<br />
two to twenty weeks' duration.<br />
Althouph it was not until May.<br />
1941, that a definite need for orpanized<br />
job traininp became api)arent<br />
at RCA A'ictor, the company<br />
has maintained from its inception<br />
a limited traininp j)ropram consistent<br />
with its e.>^tablished policy of<br />
uppradinp of emjiloyees and promotion<br />
to fill vacancies from within.<br />
In 193(>. traininp for selected .student<br />
enpineers which had lonp been<br />
piven by the company, was formalized<br />
and outstandinp praduates received<br />
internships of up to two<br />
years, affordinp them an opportunity<br />
to learn every phase of the business.<br />
After-hour classes, held for<br />
."several years prior to 19<strong>36</strong> and at<br />
first desipned only for the student<br />
enpineers, were expanded to permit<br />
other qualified employees to enter.<br />
Later, when war became imminent,<br />
the size of the enpineering<br />
study proups was increased and the<br />
traininp made more specific. Its<br />
objective was the quickest possible<br />
I)reparation for maximum effective<br />
war production. Traininp on the<br />
job, under expert scientists and enpineers,<br />
was intensified.<br />
Plant-wide coordination of the<br />
entire traininp propram was<br />
achieved last April with the ap-<br />
[xiintment of Georpe A. Maitson to<br />
the new post of I)irector of Education<br />
and Traininp for the Camden<br />
plant. Before cominp to RCA. Mr.<br />
Mattson was enpaped for seventeen<br />
years in the field of education and<br />
traininp. servinp various institutions<br />
in the roles of instructor, supervisor,<br />
and administrator. From<br />
1940 until April, 1943, he was sujiervisor<br />
of the war production<br />
traininp propram of the Camden<br />
County Vocational School.<br />
RCA's propram now embraces<br />
eipht distinct types of traininp, includes<br />
courses in more than 60 subjects,<br />
mid utilizes the cooperative<br />
