Victorian character and offers an award-winning
beach with safe bathing together with a wide
variety of all-weather leisure activities.
you lie on the golden sand or stroll
Victorian Charm
Swanage retains the feel of its
original incarnation as a Victorian
seaside resort. Much of the
architecture is from this era –
have a look along the High Street
at impressive buildings such as the
Town Hall and the Purbeck House
Hotel. As you wander around the
art galleries and boutique gift
shops, the pace of life slows to a
gentler rhythm in Swanage.
Entertainment for
Everyone
Swanage has a wide range of
events throughout the year which
will appeal to everyone. For music
lovers, the town has a fantastic
range of festivals which everyone
Purbeck towns and villages
Away from the beaches, one of our visitors’
favourite things to do is exploring the picturesque
towns and villages of Purbeck; here are just a few
to whet your appetite:
Bere Regis
The village features St John the
Baptist church which has a
history dating back 1000 years -
tours given by church members
are available between May and
September. Next to the Bere
Stream, Elder Road Open Space
can be found with its riverside
boardwalk and bridge. There are
plenty of footpaths nearby for
walks.
Corfe Castle
As well as the iconic Castle ruins,
the village is known for being one
of the prettiest in Dorset with most
of the houses built from the local
Purbeck stone. Visit the Corfe
Castle Model Village and Gardens
see what the village would have
looked like before Cromwell’s army
arrived.
Moreton
Known best for its links with TE
Lawrence who is buried in the
village cemetery, the village also
boasts tea rooms and the beautiful
etched glass windows of St
Nicholas’ Church. The Jubilee
Trail, Lawrence Trail and Lawrence
Cycle Ride all pass through
Moreton taking in the ford through
the River Frome.
Worth Matravers
Perfectly located if you are doing a
coastal walk, you can have a
breather either at the famous
Square and Compass pub, visiting
the fossil museum next door or
have a picnic near the delightful
village pond.
West Lulworth
The village of West Lulworth with
its thatched cottages is a traditional
coastal village; whose pub is one of
the oldest in Dorset. Lulworth
Cove, which is just south of the
village, was a smugglers haunt -
the coastguard cottages still remain
today.
Relax on
the river at
Wareham
Wareham
This attractive town lies on a low
ridge between the rivers Frome
and Piddle, and was formerly a
former major port where ships
arrived from all over the world.
Today the Quay remains lively
with pubs and restaurants around
the square. From here you can
take a boat trip or hire your own
or if you want to relax, simply sit
on the quayside, feeding the
ducks.
Both the River Frome and the
River Piddle can be enjoyed by
taking a waymarked circular
riverside walk; along the way,
don’t miss the tranquil Priory
Meadow which has been restored
into a conservation area where you
can enjoy the wildlife habitat.
The town has been a market town
for over 500 years and its market
has the accolade of two royal
charters; still today, regular
farmers and general markets are
held in the town on Thursday and
Saturday, maintaining its
reputation as a lively market
town.
Discover Wareham's history by
following the Walls Walk which
takes you round the town walls
originally built in Saxon times and
Purbeck has an exceptionally beautiful and
varied landscape. It is part of the Dorset Area of
A bird watcher ’s
dream
With its coast, countryside, and
Poole Harbour, Purbeck is home
to a diverse range of birds such
as peregrine falcon, lapwing,
nightjar, puffin and little egret.
Top bird watching spots include
the RSPB Nature Reserve at
Arne, Brownsea Island and
Wareham Forest. Durlston
Country Park, as well as being an
excellent birdwatching spot, also
organises events throughout the
year such as Spring Bird Week,
bird watching boat trips and
Dawn Chorus walks.
Flowers, bugs and
butterflies
The coastal cliffs, Purbeck Ridge,
Lulworth Ranges and Corfe
Common are all important
grassland sites. The Purbeck
grassland with views of Corfe
Castle and the Jurassic Coast,
and is home to Adonis blue
butterflies, bee orchids and
If bugs are more your thing, why
not go hunting for glow-worms
and other creatures of the night
at the RSPB Nature Reserve at
Above and below
the water
Boat trips, kayaking and coastal
walks give access to limestone
cliffs inhabited by breeding birds;
you might also be lucky enough
to see dolphins. Be sure to try
out the Kayak Wildlife Trail at
Studland.
If you prefer to be in the water,
why not try snorkelling at
Kimmeridge Bay’s rocky
limestone reefs – there is a
snorkelling trail here in the
summer. Swanage Pier is also a
hive of marine activity and you
may see fish such as the tompot
blenny.
Looking for
something
different
Brownsea Island, the largest
island in Poole Harbour, is home
to endangered red squirrels –
best seen in the autumn when
foraging for food. You might also
see sika deer and a variety of
wading birds including avocet and
oystercatcher.
Many of the heathlands in Purbeck
are home to Britain’s native
reptiles, including the colourful
sand lizard and illusive smooth
snake. They are usually very
difficult to find and are protected
by law, so the best way to see
them is to join an organised
event.
It ’s not
only birds you
will see at the
Reserve at Arne
History and Heritage
Purbeck has a rich heritage, from haunted
castles, to a deserted village and tales of great
adventurers, you’ll uncover the mysteries as you
delve deeper into Purbeck’s past.
Corfe Castle
The unmistakable silhouette of
Corfe Castle towers dramatically
above its picturesque village at
the very heart of Purbeck. The
castle was built in 1086 and was
one of the country’s great
strongholds until betrayal from
within led to its downfall.
Lulworth Estate
Lulworth Castle sits within its
own grounds in the Lulworth
Estate. Built in the early 17th
Century as a hunting lodge, the
exterior of the Castle has changed
little over the years. There are
displays of memorabilia and
artefacts in the basement vaults.
Wartime past
Purbeck can be proud of its active
involvement in the country’s
wartime periods. You can also
follow the Dorset Military Trail
including the Tank Museum at
Bovington.
Tyneham
Evacuated for military training
during the second world war, the
village has been deserted ever
since, but many of the buildings
survive and the Church and
School now house excellent
exhibitions about the village and
villagers. A good starting point for
walks on the coast path. Please
walks on page 23.
Swanage and Purbeck lies on the south-eastern
coast of Dorset, a quintessentially English county.
After visiting the wide open spaces of Dorset, you
will return home refreshed and reinvigorated!
Dorset
Dorset
The county boasts coastal resorts
with safe, sandy beaches, a
uniquely unpoiled coastline,
breath-taking country landscapes,
traditional market towns and
thatched cottages. The mild
climate also serves gardens well
and many of the manor homes,
for which Dorset is famed, have
magnificent gardens. Panoramic
views of the Dorset landscapes
are best enjoyed from atop one of
the many ancient pre-historic
hillforts and barrows.
To the east of the county are
Christchurch with its Priory
church, believed to be the longest
in England, and Wimborne
Minster, home to one of the
country’s very few ancient
chained libraries where some of
the earliest books can be seen.
Blandford Forum’s elegant
Georgian character contrasts with
the hill top town of Shaftesbury,
best known for Gold Hill, a steep
cobbled street lined by thatched
cottages.
On the west, the Jurassic Coast’s
rich bounty of fossils can be
easily explored at Lyme Regis and
Charmouth and if you are a
Thomas Hardy fan, heading for
the County Museum in
Dorchester is a must. Further
north, lies Sherborne with its
famous Abbey known as the
cathedral of Dorset.
Olympic Sailing
www.visit-dorset.com
2012 promises to be an exciting
year for Dorset as the county will
be hosting the sailing
competitions during the London
2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games. The sailing will take place
at the Weymouth & Portland
National Sailing Academy, which
was developed to take advantage
of what are recognised as some
of the best small boat sailing
waters world-wide.
Even before the athletes arrive,
the Olympic Torch Relay will be
coming through Dorset in July on
its way to London. Full details of
16
the route will be announced in the
autumn of 2011 but there will be
celebrations and events along the
route to mark this momentous
occasion.
The venue in Dorset will be the
2nd largest Olympic and
Paralympic Games venue after
London and the ambition is to
deliver the most memorable
sailing experience in the history
of the Games. Plans for the
Games include a free Live Screen
on Weymouth Beach, so even if
you don’t have tickets for the
official spectator area, you will
still be able to follow the sailing
on the screen. There will also be
a Festival Village and Stage
featuring entertainment for all
ages. Travelling to Weymouth
will be easiest by public transport
– as well as direct train services,
there will be a number of park
Dorset Approved Visitor
Accommodation & NQAS
To give you reassurance about your
choice of accommodation, all properties
advertised in this Guide have been
inspected and meet designated criteria.
All properties meet the standards
set by the Dorset Approved
Visitor Accommodation Scheme.
This scheme ensures that the
property meets all legal
requirements regarding health
and safety and that good
customer service practices
are being implemented.
Properties are inspected
annually by independent
assessors. The scheme is
accredited by VisitEngland
using criteria implemented
nationally.
Many of the properties have
also undertaken a more
complete assessment as part
of the National Quality
Assurance Scheme (NQAS), a
harmonized scheme operated
by VisitEngland and the Automobile
Association. As well as the elements of
the Dorset Approved Visitor
Accommodation Scheme, the NAQAS
inspectors assess the quality of the
guest experience. The accommodation
standards, facilities, cleanliness,
ambience, hospitality, service and food
of the properties are graded from one
to five stars or pennants, with five being
the highest achievable rating.
Properties are assessed on the basis of
criteria for the following categories:
Guest Accommodation
This category includes guest houses,
bed and breakfasts, farmhouses and
inns. Properties tend to be personally
run by the owners and are likely to offer
limited services other than bed and
breakfast.
Hotels
Properties have a minimum of 6
bedrooms and may offer additional
services such as room service and
evening meals.
Additional Awards
VisitEngland Gold
and Silver Awards
Look out for Gold and Silver
awards which recognise an
exceptional level of comfort,
hospitality and service over and above
that expected of their grading level.
AA Rosettes
AA Rosettes show achievement in
offering exceptional quality of food.
David Bellamy
Conservation Award
Awards are made each year to
holiday parks which can
demonstrate policies showing
an active concern for the environment.
The scheme looks at virtually every
aspect of park management, from the
protection of plant and animal habitats
to the efficient use of energy and
recycling. Helping visitors to understand
conservation is also considered an
important quality feature. Three levels can
be achieved: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
VisitEngland Welcome Awards
Walkers and Cyclists. If
you’re a walker or cyclist, you
know how helpful it is to stay
somewhere that offers
facilities such as a room to
dry wet clothes. Look out for
these logos for
accommodation which does
this and much more.
Families. Look out for this
logo to book accommodation
focused on catering for your
family’s needs.
Green Tourism
in the UK. Businesses opting to join are
criteria covering a range of areas such
as energy and water efficiency, waste
