feature letter from belgium
I arrived at the show absolutely wiped out
as the day before was the local school’s annual
BBQ at our farm. The first day that we arrived
in Belgium the local policeman paid us a visit
to check our papers. He came back a couple
of hours later and managed to make himself
understood. ‘Which school were we going to
send the children to’ I managed to get across
to him that we had no idea and were going
to start looking round. At this he pointed to
his police car and gestured that we should
all get in. Now this is very exciting for a two
and a four year old but a bit worrying for their
mother. However he was smiling and I didn’t
get the feeling that we were
French then English the 3rd and from then on
all in French unless they hadn’t understood. It
was painless language learning. For this and
the warm safe family feeling of that school
I will always be grateful. As a thank you we
invited them for a BBQ and even though the
children have both left it has continued every
year since. They walk up to us through the
village in a two by two crocodile, They stop at
Mr. Jambon (the pig) who gets the leftovers
from their dinner the day before, they are
introduced to whatever we happen to have in
the way of chicks, ducklings etc. and this year
bottle fed lambs and goat kids. They walk
Mr Jambon!
being arrested. He drove us into the village,
parked outside the school there which I
didn’t know existed and took us inside.
There he introduced us to Madam Cochineal
(ladybird) the teacher. He talked to her in
incomprehensible French and then she talked
to us – in English. She had spent three years in
the USA. She explained that our policeman had
realized that we spoke limited French – that’s
putting it mildly - and he had decided that
this was the best school for the children. He
even took all the forms back to the station and
filled them in so that the children could start
the next day. This they did and we didn’t have
a single tear.
Everything was explained in English for the
first week, English and French the second,
down the fields to see the alpacas and my
neighbour’s cows, come back up for their
hotdog BBQ and then if they have been very
good (they always are) they all have a ride
round on a horse and play football. This takes
about four hours and is exhausting but oh such
good fun. We don’t do it for any commercial
reason but you never know what might
come of it. This year there was a new teacher
with the children. I still don’t know what
her background is but she asked very good
questions about fibre production, how many
animals per hectare and their values. She has
since been back with a friend to have a look at
them again. I don’t know if anything will come
of it but you never know. At the very least it is
someone else out there singing the praises
of alpacas. l
