A clean solution.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. The combustion of
natural gas emits nearly half the carbon dioxide than the combustion of
coal, and approximately a third of the carbon dioxide of oil. Natural gas
also has fewer impurities than both coal and oil. As our nation continues
to transition to renewable sources, natural gas will play a critical role in
making the current energy mix cleaner, helping to significantly reduce the
harmful environmental impact of fossil-fuel energy generation.

Natural gas is one of our nation’s most plentiful resources—most estimates
suggest that we have sufficient natural gas deposits to provide energy for
another 100 years, further reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
Safe and reliable energy.
Natural gas is part of an existing infrastructure that makes the fuel available
virtually everywhere, anytime it’s needed. With miles of underground
distribution lines (2.4 million miles!) and efficient delivery, natural gas
reaches millions of customers as usable, reliable energy every day.

The development and demand for energy from clean and renewable sources in America has
increased dramatically over the past several years. Just by taking a look at Viridian’s energy
newsfeed (http://energynews.viridian.com/) you can see daily evidence of the advancement in
regulation, research, funding, innovation, and development in renewable energy. Sources like
wind, solar, hydro, and biomass are significant and growing factors in our nation’s energy mix.
It’s an exciting reality, as we see the social, environmental and economic impact of this growth.
Ultimately, this transition to a sustainable future will build a stronger economy and a healthier
environment. In the meantime, as America generates over 90% of its energy from nonrenewable
sources, natural gas offers a promising bridge to the ultimate solution. As continued
research, innovation and development lead us to the most environmentally and economically

Every form of energy generation has some degree of undesirable environmental impact. Although natural
gas is a cleaner-burning resource, that’s not the whole picture. As a supplier or customer hoping to support
a responsible and credible solution, today’s options are limited. Without clear research to define what is and
what is not harmful, without innovation to perfect an extraction process, without transparency and regulation
that makes sense for all stakeholders, the future of natural gas is unclear. Viridian is committed to taking
an industry lead in driving demand, education and solution-focused discussion to increase transparency and
responsibility in natural gas production.

Viridian’s vision for a more sustainable future has always been predicated on
the idea that each positive individual choice, no matter how small, can add up
to an incredible impact. When you choose Viridian for your natural gas service,
not only do you receive affordable, reliable natural gas supply, but you are also
adding your voice to a discussion demanding transparency and responsible
production and extraction of this valuable resource. With each person who
enrolls for Viridian’s service, we have the ability to make our message stronger,
more informed, and more influential.
Viridian’s customers and Associates can create a groundswell of support for a market-based certification
program for responsible extraction of natural gas. In electricity generation, a market-based incentive program through
Renewable Energy Certificates drives demand to support increased generation from clean sources.
In other industries, programs exist to support higher industry standards. For example, the Forest Stewardship Council
promotes more transparent and responsible production of paper products and Green-e Energy creates higher standards for
the renewable energy industry. Unfortunately, no such system or program exists for the natural gas industry. We believe that
the creation of a program like this for the natural gas industry is a critical step to improving the methods for production and
extraction of natural gas.
It begins with demand. Every customer who enrolls in our natural gas service represents one more customer expressing a
desire to purchase and use more responsibly sourced natural gas. Simply by enrolling for
Viridian’s natural gas service, each customer will become part of the critical mass we need to be a credible leader in the
industry. The more customers we reach, the larger voice we can have in driving demand for
responsible solutions.
