<strong>Film</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> goes well with any AS/A Level subject.<br />
Many <strong>Film</strong> students study English, History or Social<br />
Sciences. <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> links particularly well with<br />
English Literature, Art History, Theatre <strong>Studies</strong> but<br />
students have also successfully combined it with Maths<br />
and Physics!<br />

interested in film and<br />
would like to learn more<br />
about it . You do not need<br />
to have studied <strong>Film</strong> or<br />

Media <strong>Studies</strong> and enjoyed<br />
the film component<br />
then AS <strong>Film</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> will<br />
give you the opportunity<br />

What Will I be Studying<br />
AS Level consists of two units<br />
EXPLORING FILM FORM: You will make a study<br />
of how films use editing, camerawork, sound and<br />
mise-en-scene. You will write a detailed step<br />
outline for your own film; you will write one<br />
analytical essay on a film extract of your choice.<br />
This is the coursework unit and is worth 40% of<br />
the AS course.<br />
BRITISH and AMERICAN FILM: This involves a<br />
comparative study of two Hollywood films linked<br />
by either theme or genre. You will also study the<br />
cinema business, both in America and the UK. You<br />
will make studies of film production, cinema<br />
going, stars, film finance, marketing and publicity.<br />
In addition, you will make a study of two linked<br />
British films to consider themes and genre. This is<br />
the examined unit and is worth 60% of the AS<br />
course.<br />

A2 consists of two units:<br />
FILM RESEARCH +<br />
CREATIVE PROJECTS:<br />
You will carry out research into a project of<br />
your choice. You will either write a film screenplay<br />
or a treatment for a documentary film<br />
based on your research project<br />
VARIETIES of FILM EXPERIENCE: You will<br />
study a range of issues and debates in film<br />
studies, including topics on film spectatorship<br />
and issues in world cinema. You will make a detailed<br />
study of one film bringing together all the<br />
approaches you have learnt<br />
