MSAC Welcomes Americorps Member, Liz Dodd
Lisbeth Dodd is the newest addition to MSAC staff. As a
Neighbor to Neighbor Americorps member (a new joint effort
with Central Vermont Council on Aging), she will be working here
and in the community to serve seniors in a variety of ways.
Liz, as she prefers to be called, resides locally and has been
a Vermonter for many years. A fairly recent member of MSAC
herself, she will be assisting with Healthy Aging programming
and leading some activities. As a swimmer and dancer, Liz is
looking forward to furthering the movement opportunities at the
Center. Does anyone have a new or gently used ping pong table to
donate
Liz will also be focusing on volunteer recruitment and management,
and has already begun to reach out to our members to
draw on their special skills and interests. She has experience in
woodworking, and the Center may find itself in the coming
months with plant stands, restored storage cabinets, and card tables.
Stay tuned and speak up if interested!
Liz has Masters degrees in Social Work and History. She
worked for many years at UVM and later enjoyed a career as a
clinical social worker. Experiencing the impact of life challenges,
and the opportunities of aging of her family and friends, has contributed
to her awareness of area, state and national resources for
seniors.
Liz’s sunny office is located in the Resource Room (back
corner of MSAC) where she is looking forward to putting her experience
to work through expanding the library
of print and visual materials, as well as
hosting partnering organizations in presentations
and discussion groups on topics of interest
to Center members.
Liz enjoys a good conversation with
fellow members. (Please bring pictures of
your grandkids and pets to share!)
Special Announcement: Beginner’s Ukulele
Class: Open to all adults.
We have been approached by a significant number of people
under the age of 50 who would like to take Bob Riggens’
Beginner’s Ukulele class this Fall. I have decided to
consider this an “intergenerational” class opportunity, in
keeping with the growing buzz of passionate Ukulele playing
that has grown out of MSAC and spilled into the greater
community over the past two years. Interested people
50+ will need to become members in order to register, and
people under 50 will be charged $70 to register for the
class (the equivalent of what it would cost a new member).
Class starts Tuesday, October 2 nd , and goes 6-8 pm in
the Community Room.
Ongoing Ukulele group rehearsal happens Thursday nights,
6-8 pm, in the same place, and they are available for performances
(contact Bob Barrett).
Finally, on Sunday, November 18th, there will be a special
ukulele workshop and concert by Lil’ Rev, an accomplished
folk musician with whom some of our uke players
spent time last fall, so save the date! – Janna
Slide Show and Talk: A Second Bhutan Visit by Tina Muncy
Thursday, November 8, 2012- 7:00PM
Bhutan is a country where buying cigarettes is illegal, the rice is red
and chillies aren’t just a seasoning but the entire dish. It’s also a
deeply Buddhist land, where men wear a tunic to work and where
Gross National Happiness is deemed more important than Gross
National Product. Visitors famously have to pay a minimum of US
$200 per day, making it one of the world’s most expensive countries
to visit. Tina Muncy went back for a second visit to Bhutan
this spring at the invitation of the Ministry of Education to train
principals and teachers. Her faithful group of supporters has asked
if she would do a second show of pictures from this visit. So she
will combine some of the introduction to Bhutan from last time
with new pictures and stories. Please join us.
Come to the Computer Lab on Thursdays from 10
a.m. to noon to consult with volunteer technician Nathan
Vaughan with your computer questions! (Free!)

More Thanks!
Thank you to
Zdravko and Tanja
Vukoja of Your Solution,
Inc. Mr. “Z” and Tanja
are long-time custodians
for MSAC and have recently
been going above
and beyond the call of duty
and discounting their services
for us when doing
extra maintenance and
cleaning. We are especially
grateful for their recent
help cleaning all kitchen
inventory and existing
equipment that were filthy
from being in storage for
nearly three years after the
fire.
If any MSAC members are
looking to hire a cleaner in
your home, they can be
reached at 223-6403 or
YourSolutionTZV@gmail.com.
Thank you to Thierry Guerlain for his willingness to be
appointed as the new City Council representative to the
MSAC Advisory Board. Thierry and his wife recently
joined MSAC as members, and his perspective and experience
will be assets to MSAC. He has also generously
donated to our scholarship fund ($600) and has
volunteered to lead a Fall class at MSAC: “How to use
your iPhone.”
Thank you to Steve Ribolini of S&R Services for his
generous donation of storage space after the fire, which
we have finally emptied!
Thank you to George Gerundo, MSAC volunteer, for
his continuously happy willingness to do such tasks as
removing salvage metal and sanding down our kitchen
baker’s table for refinishing.
Thank you to Karen Matthews, retired librarian and
MSAC volunteer, for organizing the book collection on
our new bookshelves! All members are welcome to the
collection – donations are welcome—a few at a time.
Thank you to Irene Nightingale Nettler for her tireless
help and hospitality as the primary organizer of the
Tuesday meals at MSAC!
Thank you to Elaine Cohen for the use of her 3 rd floor
apartment kitchen, where a recent Tuesday lunch was
prepared in lieu of a working kitchen (yet) down in the
Senior Activity Center!
Thank you to Leane Garland for her generous donation
of an Apple computer setup (iMac 1.6GHz with
17”screen, power supply, 512 MB RAM and 160GB
Serial ATA drive)and MS Office MAC 2004 software)
and to Bob Troester for installing it in the computer
