Climate Confusion
How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to
Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and
Misguided Policies that Hurt the Poor
Roy Spencer
If you listen to the media, you would think that a man-made
environmental catastrophe was about to engulf the world
and imperial civilization. From Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth
to nightly jeremiads about CO2 emissions and “carbon footprints,”
we are bombarded around the clock with alarmist reports
that disastrous global warming is on the rise and that it
is all our fault.
The noted climatologist Roy Spencer shows that fears
about global warming are vastly exaggerated and are driven
by politics, not truth. He shows that a global superstorm has
already arrived—but it is a storm of hype and hysteria. Climate
Confusion is a ground-breaking book that combines impeccable
scientific authority with great wit and literary
panache to expose the hysteria surrounding the myths of
global warming and climate change. Spencer shows that the
earth is far more resilient than eco-pessimists pretend and
that increasing wealth and technological ingenuity, far from
being the enemies of the environment, are the only means
we possess to solve environmental problems as they arise.
Roy Spencer is a principal research scientist for University
of Alabama in Huntsville. In the past, he served as Senior Scientist
for Climate Studies at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight
Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Spencer is the recipient of
NASA’s Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement.
He is principally known for his satellite-based temperature
monitoring work, for which he was awarded the American
Meteorological Society’s Special Award.
Dukays, chronicles the oldest aristocratic family
in Hungary and their inexorable decline after WWI.
After centuries of rule disintegration and war force the
new generation to face a destiny they are unprepared
for, especially the daughters, Zia and Kristina, who are
caught between the old ways and their roles as powerful
women in the 20th century. Their decisions will
seal the family’s fate in this tumultuous family saga.
Willful Blindness
Memoir of the Jihad
Andrew C. McCarthy
In Willful Blindness, Andrew C. McCarthy takes readers back
to the real beginning of the war on terror—not the atrocities
of September 11, but the first bombing of the World
Trade Center in February 1993 when radical Islamists effectively
declared war on the United States.
From his perch as a government prosecutor of the blind
sheik and other jihadists responsible for the bombing, Andrew
McCarthy takes readers inside the twisted world of Islamic
terror. He traces the evolution of his own thinking
about how best to deal with terrorism, showing how the terrorists’
skill at using and abusing the U.S. legal system has led
to a culture of “lawfare,” redefining war as a normal criminal
issue susceptible to resolution in the courts. “Lawfare,” Mc-
Carthy notes, “has become the terrorists’ best friend” and
has come close to paralyzing our efforts at defending our national
security. This eye-opening book by one of our leading
legal journalists is sure to be widely noticed and debated.
Andrew C. McCarthy is a former federal prosecutor and
a Contributor at National Review Online. From 1993
through 1996, while an Assistant United States Attorney for
the Southern District of New York, he led the prosecution
against the jihad organization of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman,
in which a dozen Islamic militants were convicted of conducting
a war of urban terrorism against the United States
that included the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Following
the September 11 attacks, Mr. McCarthy supervised
the U.S. Attorney’s Anti-Terrorism Command Post in New
York City. From 1999 through 2003, he was the Chief Assistant
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District’s satellite office,
responsible for federal law enforcement in six counties north
of New York City.
Mr. McCarthy is the recipient of numerous awards, including
the Justice Department’s highest honors: the Attorney
General’s Exceptional Service Award (1996). He has
served as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense.
He writes extensively on legal, social and political issues for
More Great Stories from History For
Every Day of the Year
W.B. Marsh & Bruce Carrick
366 is the sequel to the bestselling 365—highly addictive,
bite-size chunks of history.
Every day of the year has a story to tell. Who was
assassinated, acceded to the throne, was born, began
an affair, died on what particular day It may seem
strange that even the biggest events of world history
happened on a particular day—your birthday, a rainy
day in May or sunny one in June.
Read about the first ever tanks going into combat
on the Somme, Jesse Owens humiliating the Nazis at
the Olympic Games, the bikini swimsuit making its
debut and the beginning of prohibition.
W.B. Marsh and Bruce Carrick present a leap year of
historical stories in turns amazing, horrifying, touching
and tearful. Spanning the history of man’s life on earth
and every corner of the inhabited world, they paint a
picture of infinite richness and enthralling detail.
W.B. Marsh was born in New York but now lives in
London. On his birthday—26 October—the legendary
“Gunfight at the OK Corral” took place at Tombstone,
Arizona, in 1881. Bruce Carrick has worked in New
The Karmapa’s
Middle Way
Feast for the Fortunate
By the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje
Translated by Tyler Dewar
Marked by eloquent poetry, vigorous and extensive
analysis, and heart instructions on breaking
through the veils of confusion to independently experience
the true nature of things, The Karmapa’s Middle
Way contains the Ninth Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje’s
comprehensive commentary on the Indian master
Chandrakirti’s seminal text, the Entrance to the Middle
Way. This commentary, Feast for the Fortunate, is the
Ninth Karmapa’s abridgement of the Eighth Karmapa
Mikyö Dorje’s masterpiece, the Chariot of the Takpo
Kagyü Siddhas. In it readers will find previously unavailable
material on the Karmapa’s Middle Way view
and a rare window into a philosophically charged era
of Middle Way exposition in Tibetan Buddhism.
In this book, Chandrakirti and the Karmapa present
in precise detail the vital Buddhist concept of emptiness,
through which the Mahayana path of compassionate
altruism becomes complete.
The Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje (1556-
1603), was a prolific author on a wide range of sutra
and tantra topics and is most renowned in the Kagyü
tradition for his instructions on Mahamudra. Tyler
Dewar lives in Seattle, WA.
XXL Hollywood Stories
Inside the Minds of 22 Celebrities,
With One A–List Writer
Scott Raab
For 15 years, author Scott Raab has accessed Hollywood—for
Esquire and GQ magazines—as few
American writers have done before: honestly, journalistically
and sometimes shockingly.
From stars’ movie sets to bizarre locations, Raab has
pursued the art of the elusive, unlikely intimate profile,
from bouncing along Malibu waves as Sean Penn’s first
mate in Penn’s boat, to hanging backstage with Will
Ferrell, dressed as a Speedo-clad leprechaun. No matter
the setting, Raab draws evocative word pictures of
how the world’s most famous folk eat, think, hide and
(sometimes) confess.
In these Hollywood—and New York—stories, actors,
musicians and star athletes are expertly pulled
down from their pedestals, for all of us to inspect. Up
close, and much more personally.
Esquire writer-at-large and recent Court TV contributor
Scott Raab has written celebrity and other stories
for national magazines since earning an M.F.A. at the
Career Contentment
Don’t Settle for Anything Less!
J. Jeffrey Garton
Authored by widely experienced career coach, Jeff Garton,
Career Contentment—Don’t Settle for Anything Less! initiates
the campaign and effort to address the global problems
with job dissatisfaction that have plagued generations and
are still unresolved. This campaign shifts the focus away from
expecting employers to help make you satisfied, and instead
teaches you how to recognize career contentment; it also
eliminates confusion and expands your options.
Garton introduces innovative resources that teach you
how to reason and recognized career contentment, and how
to leverage it to attract and enjoy meaningful work. Career is
the pursuit of contentment derived from work made meaningful
by the use of your talents to fulfill your callings and
purpose It is not just the pursuit of satisfaction that keeps you
dependent on employers and are here today and gone tomorrow.
This new title shows you how a shift in your own attitude
can attract not just the right job for your background and/or
work history, but also attract work that will be meaningful to
you as well. The premise is deceptively simple: meaningful
work is available to anyone willing to adopt the right mindset
and attitude. Readers are guided along this path to enlightenment
by first understanding organizational factors
that lead to job satisfaction and second by making a conscious
choice to enjoy your work.
J. Jeffrey Garton is a global career-coach and executive
recruiter who lives with his family near Chicago, Illinois. He
formerly worked in Human Resources with the Philip Morris
Companies, where he led the global staffing functions for
Kraft Foods and the Miller Brewing Company. Jeff has devoted
his entire career to recruiting and coaching people
Street Legal
A Guide to Pre-trial Criminal Procedure
for Police, Prosecutors, and Defenders
Ken Wallentine
The Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution
requires that searches and seizures conducted under governmental
authority be “reasonable.” But the reality is not
always that straightforward.
What does “reasonable suspicion” mean
What constitutes a “seizure”
What constitutes a waiver of Miranda rights
What constitutes a “search” under the Fourth
Amendment
Are police service dogs equal to “deadly force”
Noted author and Chief of Law Enforcement for the Utah
Attorney General, Ken Wallentine, has written a new book
intended to answer these questions, and act as a guide for
police, prosecutors, and defenders.
This book provides specific guidance on pre-trial criminal
procedure of all sorts, and explains in understandable terms
“what you can do and what you can’t do” under 4th Amendment
search and seizure law. From traffic checkpoints and
forceful felony arrest, from Miranda warnings to inmate and
cell searches, it’s all covered in this concise reference. Search
warrants, electronic surveillance, and use of canine search
and seizure are also covered in great detail. In addition, citations
are included in the book so that readers may find and
read the entire case for more information.
Ken Wallentine is the Chief of Law Enforcement for the
Utah Attorney General. Active in civic affairs, Ken Wallentine
is Chair of the Utah Law Enforcement Legislative Committee.
He is a featured writer in numerous law enforcement journals.
Chief Wallentine has been a speaker for the National Center
on Counterterrorism and Cybercrime, the Oregon District
Attorneys Association, the United States Department of Justice,
the United States Department of Transportation and
numerous other college, civic and law enforcement groups.
Deep Thought on Life
Mark Vernon
Mark Vernon takes his inspiration from 42 of the
funniest, wisest, and quirkiest quotations about
the big questions in life, and uses these as starting
points for his brilliant observations. In each chapter he
explains what the greatest thinkers of all time have
had to say on subjects such as eternal life, work, love
and sex, and the nature of happiness; he draws his
own conclusions, and will provoke you to think deeply
about these things for yourself. 42 is the humorous answer
to the question “What is the Meaning of Life” as
given by the super-computer Deep Thought in Douglas
Adams’ bestseller The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the
Galaxy.
Questions include: Is ignorance bliss Are freedom
and slavery mental states Is love blind Is there any
reason to believe a politician who tells you things can
only get better 42 assumes no prior knowledge of
philosophy; it’s easy and fun to read, but serious and
challenging at the same time.
Mark Vernon is a broadcaster and journalist and
author of numerous books, including The Philosophy of
Friendship. He has a PhD in philosophy, as well as degrees
in theology and physics, and he is an Honorary
Research Fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London,
Failure of Intelligence
The Decline and Fall of the CIA
Melvin A. Goodman
This is a time for serious soul-searching regarding the role
of the Central Intelligence Agency and the intelligence
community in general. The recent intelligence failures regarding
the unanticipated collapse of the Soviet Union, the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the run-up to
the Iraq war demonstrate a CIA and a $45 billion intelligence
enterprise that has utterly failed to provide strategic warning
to policymakers. Even worse is its efforts to boldly falsify intelligence
to suit political purposes. It will not be possible to
reform the enterprise until we understand and debate the
link between intelligence and policy, the important role of intelligence,
and the need for an intelligence agency that is not
beholden to political interests. Failure of Intelligence will inform
such a debate and suggest a reform agenda.
The author has interviewed several former directors of
central intelligence to get a better understanding of their reform
ideas in the wake of their stewardship over the intelligence
community. The book challenges the conventional
wisdom on clandestine collection, arguing that there needs
to be fewer clandestine agents, not more; that the best spies
are rarely recruited, but are more typically walk-ins; that the
failure to have diplomatic relations has led to the inability to
collect intelligence in such central threat areas as Cuba, Iran,
Iraq, and North Korea. This book is as timely as it is provocative.
Melvin Goodman is a senior fellow at the Center for International
Policy and an adjunct professor of government at
Johns Hopkins University. He has more than 40 years of experience
in the CIA, the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence
and Research, and the Department of Defense. He
lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
Over 14 million American workers receive employee
stock options—similar to the number that
belongs to labor unions, making it likely that the issue
will arise in an upcoming divorce case. This handy,
practice-focused guide provides comprehensive guidance
on the valuation, taxation, and distribution of
stock options in divorce. Making a complex subject
clear and approachable, the book discusses when
options are considered marital property, tax liability
resulting from the exercise of stock options, and use of
stock options as income for alimony and child support
cases. It includes sample provisions for property settlement
The First Women
in Love
D. H. Lawrence
Seen by Lawrence as his most successful book, but
subject to the initial prudery and incomprehension
that met most of his fiction, Women in Love charts the
regenerative and destructive aspects of human passion
as Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen—who first appeared
in The Rainbow—conduct relationships with Gerald
Crich and Rupert Birkin. Set against a backdrop of a
world consuming itself in war, the novel creates an instructive
vision of humanity’s poignant dance with life
and death.
This text is the famous ‘first Women In Love,
Lawrence’s preferred and unexpurgated version,
which was rejected by every publisher who saw it because
of the banning of The Rainbow in 1915. More
positive in tone than the revised version published
later, with different central relationships and a radically
different ending, it is now viewed by many as his
greatest work.
After Miscarriage
Medical Facts and Emotional Support
for Pregnancy Loss
Krissi Danielsson
Of every five women who learn they are pregnant, one
will lose her baby before she is halfway to term. Knowing
that miscarriage is commonplace makes it no less devastating
to many women, especially those who experience it
repeatedly. As they grieve, they often embark on a search for
answers. Why did this happen How can I keep it from happening
again How can I deal with so much sadness Can I
stand to face another pregnancy Their partners and
spouses, too, seek answers and guidance as they endeavor to
provide support through this difficult experience.
Danielsson balances the emotional and the technical as
she answers these questions. She explains the known and
possible causes of miscarriage, considers when treatment is
appropriate, and describes the many current treatment options,
assessing their effectiveness. She provides ample tips
for coping with one’s own sorrow and others’ occasional insensitivity.
The text is liberally sprinkled with quotes both
from women who have miscarried and reproductive specialists,
and from time to time Danielsson also shares stories of
her own miscarriages. A chapter just for dads, written by the
author’s husband and full of concrete tips and suggestions,
concludes the text. For readers seeking details on medical
conditions related to miscarriage, Danielsson includes a comprehensive
list of references and a list of helpful websites.
“[This] book is informative, comprehensive, and sensitive.
... With compassion, and support, Ms. Danielsson provides
essential information for those who have suffered the heartbreaking
loss of a miscarriage.” —Madeline Licker Feingold,
How Much Money Does
an Economy Need
Solving the Central Economic Puzzle of
Money, Prices, and Jobs
Hunter Lewis
Why should unemployment exist Why should people
willing and eager to work not be able to find good,
fairly paid jobs Why should families, including children, suffer
as a result And why should even successful economies
experience boom/bust cycles, with frantic hiring succeeded
by even more desperate lay-offs and unemployment
Unemployment and boom/bust cycles together are perhaps
the greatest unsolved problem of economics. Most
economists agree that the problem is connected to money,
the way that money comes into being and flows through the
economy. Prices also seem to play a large role. Most economists
think that stable prices help to keep an economy stable,
but not everyone agrees. Some believe that inflation
helps create jobs; others that the whole point of the market
system is to bring prices down so that goods and services are
more affordable.
How Much Money Does an Economy Need takes a subject
that most people find difficult to decipher and makes it easy
to understand. Not only easy, but fascinating, with startling
insights in every chapter. This book is especially recommended
for informed readers and public policy makers who
want to get to the bottom of economics so that they can
make better choices.
If you have read Lewis’s earlier book, Are the Rich Necessary
(Axios Press, September 2007) along with How Much
Money Does an Economy Need, you have become economically
literate and will be able to understand and evaluate the
key economic issues of your time.
Hunter Lewis is the author of The Real World War (Putnam),
A Question of Values (HarperCollins), and The Beguiling
Serpent (Axios Press), all books about the related fields of
economics and values, along with numerous magazine and
My Wedding Calendar
A 16-Month Daily Planner
Elizabeth and Alex Lluch
Every year, more than 5 million Americans go
about.
My Wedding Calendar helps the bride keep track of
every aspect of planning her wedding, such as sending
invitations, making reservations, and meeting with
vendors. The book includes checklists, lists of do’s and
don’ts, an address book for invitees, and contact organizers
Since just about everyone learned to
knit with worsted weight yarn, it is
undeniably the favorite yarn choice
with knitters. Worsted yarns feel more
comfortable and allow for more stressfree
knitting than heavier or finer
yarns. One of the best things about
this book is that we show a second
yarn choice. This will give knitters the
two yarn choices and create their own
Fishing Soft Baits
in Saltwater
Pete Barrett
The past decade has seen a revolution in how saltwater
fishermen pursue fish: using soft-plastic imitations
that out-fish traditional lures and baits. Fishing
this new style of lure takes knowledge and skill to do it
right, which Pete Barrett provides in abundance in
Fishing Soft Baits in Saltwater. Learn the secrets of
trolling, jigging, drifting and casting soft baits for all
types of fish, plus rigging techniques, adding colors,
skirts, eyes and hooks, rigging plastic bucktails, tube
rigs, shrimp, Slug-Go’s, shads, offshore techniques,
and much more. Chapters on tackle and tips and tricks
for the soft-bait angler round out this excellent, practical
guide.
book is all about.
My Wedding Scrapbook & Keepsake allows the user
aspect of the Muslim world is covered, from poets to scholars, religious leaders to scientists, politicians to
But Didn’t We
Have Fun
An Informal History of Baseball’s Pioneer
Era, 1843–1870
Peter Morris
Do you think you know the story of baseball’s origins If
so, But Didn’t We Have Fun will make you rethink everything
you thought you knew. By weaving together a tableau
of long-forgotten primary documents, Peter Morris retrieves
a lost era and a lost way of life. Mr. Morris, the indefatigable
researcher and brilliant chronicler of baseball, here takes a
fresh look at the early amateur years of the game. His story
begins with a generation of mid-nineteenth-century Americans
who moved from the countryside to the cities and
brought a cherished but delightfully informal game with
them. Through the prism of firsthand accounts, the reader is
privileged to watch as these pioneers adapt a simple rural
game to their new surroundings. The members of groundbreaking
clubs like the Knickerbockers of New York and the
Red Stockings of Cincinnati are rescued from the dusty pages
of history books and emerge as real men with genuine joys
and sorrows. We share their exultant pride as baseball
spreads and earns its status as the national pastime—and we
appreciate their deep dismay as their game is transformed by
professionalism and other growing pains. But Didn’t We Have
Fun offers a challenging new perspective on baseball’s earliest
years and conveys the sense of joy that once pervaded its
players. Despite the competitiveness and professionalism
that took over the game, the spirit of these pioneers triumphed
in a most unexpected way. Mr. Morris supplants the
long-discredited Abner Doubleday myth and other misconceptions
with a story just as marvelous—but one that really
happened. With 23 rare photographs.
Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe’s first novel Robinson Crusoe, published
in 1719, is considered by many to be the first
novel in English, and its success was so enormous that
by the end of the 19th century it had spawned more
translations and versions than any other English book.
Its central importance to the canon lies not just in
being first, but in being one of the best, and in Crusoe
the author created an everyman character that has become
part of our cultural heritage. Defoe’s castaway—
shipwrecked, imperiled, and facing a host of elemental
challenges—lives an archetypal life of survival, adventure
and personal development.
Born in London in 1661, the son of a butcher and
tallow chandler, Daniel Defoe is widely considered
the first English novelist. He died in 1731.
Crisis of Abundance
Rethinking How We Pay for Health Care
Arnold Kling
America’s health care troubles stem largely from a
great success: Modern medicine can do much
more today than in the past. The problem is how to
pay for it. In easy-to-understand prose, MIT-trained
economist Arnold Kling demonstrates how a greater
reliance on private savings and market innovation can
eliminate waste, contain costs, and improve the quality
of care. A must-read for health care reformers.
“His book is clear, concise, and eminently readable.
I warmly recommend his book to general readers who
want to understand what economics has to say about
health care.” —Arnold S. Relman, M.D., Harvard Medical
School, writing in the New England Journal of Medicine
“This is one of the most important books written on
health care.” —Tyler Cowen, New York Times columnist
Great Growing
At Home
The Essential Guide to Gardening Basics
Allan A. Swenson
In this book readers will discover how to grow the tastiest
vegetables and most glorious flowers, improve their landscape
to boost their property values, and have gardens that
are the envy of their neighbors. The book is an easy-to-follow
compilation of gardening know-how by a nationally-recognized
and acclaimed garden writer. Top arborists, horticulturalists,
plant breeders and other experts shared their
knowledge and advice, which Swenson has assembled in this
fact-filled book.
Great Growing at Home will answer all your gardening
questions on such disparate subjects as container gardening
and field layering, pruning and raised beds, compost bins
and crop rotation, to name just a few. Written with a bias
toward organic gardening as a result of his studies at the
famous Rodale Farm in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Swenson presents
natural, organic gardening as a practical, productive
and wholesome approach to producing an abundant, nourishing,
and flavorful food supply. The book not only reflects
his 40+ years as a garden writer, but also the first time he has
been able to assemble his accumulated knowledge of gardening
in one convenient place, including the latest information
on new vegetable hybrids that resist disease and
repel insects. Whether it’s how to attract birds and butterflies
to your garden or planting on slopes, Great Growing at Home
will be your indispensable source of all you need to know
about gardening.
The Second Lady
Chatterley’s Lover
D. H. Lawrence
Originally published abroad in 1928, and unavailable
in Britain until 1960 when it was the subject
of an infamous obscenity trial, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is
now regarded as one of the pivotal novels of the twentieth
century. Lawrence’s determination to explore
every aspect—sexual, social, psychological—of Lady
Chatterley’s adulterous liaison with the gamekeeper
Oliver Mellors makes for a profound meditation on the
human condition, the forces of nature and the social
constraints that people struggle to overcome.
Lawrence’s final novel—here presented in the
more explicit 1927 version which he described as “so
improper that it’ll never be printed”—confirms his
standing as one of the most eminent fiction writers
that England has produced.
Vaclav Smil
Without oil, there would be no globalization, no
of the modern world, and humanity’s dependence
upon it looks set to continue for decades to come. In
this captivating book, the author of the acclaimed Energy:
A Beginner’s Guide, Vaclav Smil, explains all matters
related to the ‘black stuff’, from its discovery in the
Author Vaclav Smil is Distinguished Professor in the
Labor of the Heart
A Parent’s Guide to the Decisions and
Emotions in Adoption
Kathleen Whitten, Ph.D.
Adoptive parents often experience the double trial
of emotional responses to infertility and to the
process of adoption itself, called “excruciating labor
with no end in sight,” by one adoptive mother.
Would-be adoptive parents cycle through grief, anger,
fear, anxiety, frustration, and guilt—and back again. All
of these emotions cloud decision-making as adoptive
parents are making life-altering decisions: whether to
adopt at all, to adopt an older child or an infant, or to
parent a child with developmental delays.
New empirical research by Whitten and other experts
in the field contradicts many of the myths presented
to parents and written in widely-used adoption
guides. Adoptive parents do not need yet another
book promising a “fast track” to a child or explaining
how to collect documents. Instead, they need Labor of
the Heart to help them through the difficult emotions
and decisions about adoption.
Kathleen Whitten, Ph.D. is a developmental psychologist
and journalist. She taught psychology at the
University of Virginia, served as an evaluator of the
Q.I.C. for Adoption, and she and her husband were
one of the first couples to adopt a child from Vinh
Long in the Mekong Delta.
Vinegar into Honey
Seven Steps to Understanding and
Transforming Anger, Aggression,
and Violence
Ron Leifer
Our desires and our fears are woven into a tangled
web of conflicts. We want both to eat dessert and
to be thin. We want money but don’t want to work.
Anything that threatens our sense of self and its striving
for happiness is perceived as a threat to our very
lives—the response to which is defensiveness, anger,
aggression, and violence.
Vinegar into Honey proposes a new paradigm for
understanding the relationship between stress, anxiety,
anger, and depression. Leifer provides detailed instructions
for working with anger and other painful
emotions. The process of transforming suffering into
equanimity and compassion is central in Buddhist psychology
and practice. Each of the steps in Vinegar into
Honey reflects views and methods drawn from Buddhist
tradition. Leifer’s work holds promise for psychotherapists
and their patients, individuals seeking to
understand and work with their anger, and people interested
in the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy.
Ron Leifer, M.D., trained as a psychiatrist under
Thomas Szasz and became a Buddhist practitioner in
1980. He lives in Ithaca, New York.
Invention Analysis
and Claiming
A Patent Lawyer’s Guide
Ronald D. Slusky
Invention Analysis and Claiming: A Patent Lawyer’s
Guide is a book that every new patent attorney needs
when starting out. Supervising attorneys will find it an
invaluable adjunct to their own mentoring and the
book is an ideal component of a patent department’s
training materials.
Invention Analysis and Claiming teaches old school
principles of invention analysis, claiming, spec-writing
and amendment practice that, until now, have only
been passed down one-on-one. Readers learn how to
first identify the inventive concept using the problemsolution
paradigm and then to draft claims that
broadly define the identified invention and its fallback
features. Another emphasis is the importance of drafting
claims with the anticipated enforcement scenario
in mind—capturing the invention in all of its commercially
important settings and encompassing the activities
of individual (as opposed to co-acting) direct
infringers.
Ronald D. Slusky has been a patent professional for
thirty five years and is currently in private practice in
New York City. For thirteen of his thirty years at Bell
Labs, he was in patent management, supervising and
mentoring small and large groups of patent attorneys.
Jesus: The Son of Man
His Words and His Deeds as Told and
Recorded by Those Who Knew Him
Kahlil Gibran
Still one of Gibran’s most well-loved works over 70
years after its original publication, Jesus the Son of
Man is a striking fictional portrait of Christ as seen
through the eyes of his contemporaries. Depicting a
variety of famous figures, from Mary Magdalen to
Pontius Pilate, Gibran’s spellbinding collection of narratives
combine historical authority with the supreme
eloquence that his admirers hold so dear.
Fully conscious of the social, political, and religious
realities of Palestine and Rome at the time, and at
home with the local traditions and language, Gibran
effortlessly evokes the spellbinding power of Christ’s
presence upon his associates. Presented in an attractive
gift format and accompanied by Gibran’s original
artwork, this new edition allows Gibran’s inspirational
account of Christ to be heard once more.
Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) was one of the 20th
century’s most inspirational poets, authors, and artists.
He drew upon his personal faith to write such bestsellers
as The Prophet, the bestselling book of the 20th
century.
Chöd Practice in the
Bon Tradition
Alejandro Chaoul
Foreword by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
This book is the first to trace the history of Chöd
practice in Tibet’s indigenous Bön tradition. Chöd
(“cutting through”) is a meditative practice in which
the practitioner imagines offering his or her body in
sacrifice through elaborate contemplative visualization.
Although a meditative practice, Chöd is not done
sitting comfortably on a cushion in a shrine room, but
instead is often practiced in terrifying places like cemeteries
or charnal grounds. The feelings of fear that result
are used by the Chöd practitioner to “cut
through” his or her own ego. Chöd contains elements
of early shamanism, of sutric and tantric teachings also
found in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, and of the Tibetan
highest school of Dzogchen.
Alejandro Chaoul obtained his Ph.D. at Rice University
and has also completed the seven-year program
at the Ligmincha Institute for the study of the
Bön-Buddhist tradition of Tibet. He is currently a visiting
assistant professor at the John P. McGovern, M.D.,
Center for Health, Humanities, and the Human Spirit
at the University of Texas School of Medicine. He lives
in Houston, Texas.
The Political and Wartime Memoirs of
James Allason
James Allason
he decisive episodes in the history of the twen-
century found James at the centre of the
“Ttieth
action, as a soldier, military planner, and later as a
politician with a singular grasp of the issues that mattered
to ordinary people.“ —Margaret Thatcher
The military and political memoirs of former MP
James Allason, a man who knew knew seven prime
ministers.
James Allason started his career as a cavalry officer
in pre-War India, playing polo with Maharajahs, and
working for the Viceroy (to whom he counselled humility).
He led his mounted troops into World War II on
a charger, only reluctantly accepting mechanization
into tanks. After being wounded at close quarters with
the Japanese, Allason worked with Mountbatten’s military
planners—Peter Fleming and Dean Rusk—bringing
sanity to the wilder schemes of Wingate in Burma.
Recalled to London, Allason advised Churchill in the
Cabinet War Rooms. His advice to Attlee influenced
the creation of the state of Israel.
The consummate insider, James Allason sheds new
light on the Cuban Missile Crisis and reveals the true
story of the Profumo Affair and the role of the intelligence
services in this. He lives in London.
