Father Vincent F. Costello
Father Vince Costello joined Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in 1994 and
was installed as pastor on October 16 of that year. He had served briefly as
an Associate Pastor under Father Martin Barnum.
Vince Costello is a Chicago guy through and through. He grew up on the
City’s West Side, near La Follette Park and attended St. Peter Canisius
Elementary School on North Avenue, just west of Cicero Avenue. He was
a Cub Scout and played football at St. Peter. He grew up in a “Sox”
household but likes to see both of Chicago’s teams win, and the Bears too.
He is the son of the late Vincent J. and Mary Ellen Costello. His mother
and his younger siblings, Cathy, Anne and Philip, remain in the Chicago
area.
His aspirations to the priesthood were evident early and he entered the
Archdiocese of Chicago’s minor seminary, Quigley North, for his high
school education and continued the path to ordination at Niles College and
to the major seminary in Mundelein. He was ordained in 1976.
He also has earned an M.A. degree in history from Loyola University in
Chicago and a second M.A. degree in applied spirituality from the
University of San Francisco.
As a deacon in the year prior to ordination, he served at St. Dorothy Parish
on Chicago’s South Side and was assigned associate pastor at St. Francis
Borgia on the Northwest Side, where he served from 1976 to 1981. The
next assignment was St. Christopher Parish in South Suburban Midlothian
from 1981 to 1984.
Then it was back to Niles College, this time on the faculty from 1984 to
1993 and he also served on the Priests’ Council and served an elected term
on the Priest Placement Board and helped as a field advocate for the
Marriage Tribunal and worked in the Pre-Cana program.
Following Niles College, he joined us in Arlington Heights. He will begin
his task as a Vicar for Priests on July 25, 2005.
