Revolutionary Nano Technology in Medicine and Nutrition
09 November 2012
M
issed the meeting on
Friday, and from what
I heard, while these
are not his exact
words, they reflect the message
he shared with the club.
There are no fixed rules when
buying art, but it may be wise to
consider some advice.
1. Selecting Art
This may sound obvious, but you
will not want to live with a piece of
art you do not like, but perhaps
bought because it was cheap,
because a friend persuaded you,
or for some other reason.
Though some people collect art
solely for investment purposes,
most experts agree the best way
to invest is to buy something you
love. That way, whether it appreciates
in value or not is immaterial;
the pleasure owning it will be
enough.
2. Choosing Artists
Emil Mirzakhanian
The Secret World of Art Dealers
Well-recognized and professional
artists normally fulfill three criteria:
(1) technically skilled, (2)
original (recognizable) style and
(3) innovative work.
Do not choose paintings only because
the artist is ‘famous’. Many
excellent artists are not well
known, but their work may be
highly inspiring, innovative or
beautiful.
An important 'stamp of approval'
is museum quality, i.e. work by
the artist are in museum collections
as they only focus on quality,
without considering the commercial
value.
3. Finding Paintings
Consider several factors, such as
execution, subject matter, form,
colors and composition. All artists
produce works of varying quality
– some may be masterpieces, but
many are often more ordinary.
Consult a trusted art professional
for advice. Pay attention to authenticity
and provenance as copies
and forgeries have become
commonplace.
4. Buying Investments
Seek professional
guidance
from
trusted
sources, such
as reputable
art galleries,
art consultants
or auction
houses.
5. Building Collections
If you buy more than a couple of
paintings, you are on the way to
become a collector. Some are
more serious than others and willing
to spend more money. It is
not necessary though, to be rich
to build a limited collection of
paintings.
Spend some time visiting museums,
galleries, auction houses
and dealers to get a feel for what
is available. Take note of what
catches your eye and why.
