No (not yet at least). But a newtechnology that enables things(drugs, creams, nutritional aides andso on) to be manufactured in a waythat allows them to be targeted preciselyas never before possible.Dr Lothar Haegele gave RCBS afascinating insight into what cannow be achieved using technologydeveloped by his company, X-Lab.The trouble with his talk was not somuch what he said, but what he didn’tsay because of time restrictions.For example, any insulin-dependentdiabetic needs regular injectionsbecause insulin doesn’t survivepassing through the digestive systemin oral form. Dr. Lothar told usthat within six months the capabilitywill be with us, using his nanotechnology,to deliver insulin without injectionefficiently and effectively.What the technology enables, is forpreviously insoluble drugs and othersubstances to be made soluable byscaling down the size to nano-scaleddimensions.As an aside it is worth noting that thecapabilities now can reduce particlesize to 8 nanometres (5 atoms ofsilicon are about 1 nanometre) – soquite small then.Using the technology is perhapseven more interesting. Curcumin(which is found in the spice turmeric)has long been known as a naturallyoccurring beneficial health additivebut hard to get into the body. UsingDr Lothar’s technology, it can now bemade soluble and delivered in liquidform in a variety of drinks very easilygiving maximum effect.Who knows where this ends? Thecancer sufferer who has to takechemo-therapy drugs may soon beable to take a much lower dose, deliveredto exactly where it’s neededrather than overdosing on a poisonouschemical and suffering the sideeffects that usually accompany suchtreatments.The robots aren’t with us yet – butmaybe with Dr Lothar’s technology,they’ll never be needed!
