Although it reached global audiences
through the hugely popular Brit flick Notting
Hill, way before Hugh Grant and his floppy
fringe made Portobello Market famous, this
London institution was attracting visitors as
far back as the 19th century.
Originally a fresh produce market
on Portobello Road, it began to sell antiques
in the 1960s and now has a little bit of
everything. Antiques, crafts, fresh food,
clothes – you name it, and chances are
someone’s selling it on a rickety trestle
along this historic stretch of street.
Obwohl der Portobello Market erst wirklich
durch Hugh Grant und seine verstrubbelten
Haare in dem britischen Film Notting Hill
weltbekannt wurde, zog diese Londoner
Gegend bereits seit dem 19. Jahrhundert
Besucher an. Ursprünglich befand sich dort
ein Markt für Frischwaren, seit den 60er
Jahren wurden Antiquitäten verkauft.
Heute findet man von allem ein bisschen:
Antiquitäten, Kunsthandwerk, Frischwaren,
Kleidung – Sie brauchen es nur auszusprechen
und es bestehen gute Chancen, dass sich
entlang dieses historischen Straßenabschnitts
ein entsprechender Verkäufer hinter einem
klapprigen Holzstand findet.
