The first stage of
our 2007 application
process for
new apprentices
was completed
February 17, 2007.
We took applications
from 222 applicants
for the aptitude
exam. The
applicants will be
tested March 17,
2007.
The apprentices
would like to
thank all the journeyman
that supported
their fundraising
efforts at
the union elections
and union meetings
in December.
The winner of the
Turkey Bowl lottery
raffle was
Buddy Tuite with
apprentice Alan
Tuite selling the
winning ticket.
The weldshop is
open every day
from 7:00 AM
through 3:30 PM.
We have weld
booths available in
the evenings,
Monday through
Thursday from
6:00 PM – 9:00
PM.
1517 WOODRUFF STREET
PITTSBURGH, PA 15220
You can practice any weld process at those times. Our instructors will
be limited in the amount of help in the evening times because they are
instructing apprentices in their welding classes, but we feel this would
be a big help for our members if we offered the booth space for brushing
up your skills for future job demand. Please call if interested in
booth time. (J.A.T.C. cont. page 11)
Christmas Party:
The Annual Christmas Party was held at the Teutonia Manner Club on Monday
December 4, 2006. Seventy-two members and guests gathered to celebrate
the Christmas season. They were treated to a delicious American buffet and open
bar. Afterwards, they listened and danced to the music provided by the Rhythm
Kings.
Membership Meeting:
The nomination and election of officers: President, Vice President, Secretary
and Treasurer will take place at the March 20, 2007 membership meeting
promptly at 11:00 am and will be held at the Steamfitters Complex, 1517 Woodruff
St., Pgh., PA. In accordance with the by-laws of the club, only members in
good standing may be nominated. It’s important that members step forward to
serve as officers to insure that the club continues to develop and flourish. After
the meeting a buffet lunch and beverages will be available for $10.00.
On behalf of all the members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ed
Hunter for the eight years he has served as an officer. He served as Vice President
and President and expanded the social activities of the club.
The officers and committee are presently formulating the 2007 social calendar.
Suggestions and ideas are all welcome.
UA Weld Test – UA-60 Series Exams
A change to ASME Code Section IX has allowed the use of a 2 1 / 2 " NPS pipe coupon to
qualify welders for pipe diameters 1" O.D. and above. Utilizing this allowance the UA has developed
the UA-60 Series Test Standards that specifies the use of a 2.750 O.D. (0.625" wall)
test coupon. Making use of this size of pipe not only allows us to qualify our welders for work
on small diameter pipe, but provides for the qualification of unlimited deposited weld thickness
for the SMAW process. This is a significant improvement in increasing the ranges welders can
qualify for in the welding of a single test coupon. The UA-60 Series Test Standards are available
at the Steamfitters Technology Center.
All suggestions for topics to be covered in the newsletter are heartily welcomed.
DECEMBER 1, 2006 UNION MEETING
T’was more than three weeks before Christmas, when all through the hall,
The lights were not working, in fact, nothing at all.
On December’s first Friday a meeting should fall,
But with the conditions presented, the chances were small.
The rain was still coming and the wind really fierce,
“Hey, if the meeting is cancelled nobody should care!”
The Naysayer’s were claiming that no meeting be held,
But the response was “No we’ll have it, and it will go very well.”
Harry came early to help set the scene,
Dale brought some lanterns and Joey the keys.
The officers’ reports were kept rather short;
Few questions, few answers, kind of boring of sort.
The members they came, about fifty- eight,
And those that made it thought that the meeting went great.
Fitters have a knack for turning bad situations to good.
And most that were there did the best that they could.
Chicken wings, pizzas and kegs full of beer,
Brought greetings and friendships and a room full of cheer.
All that were there had the Union at heart
And none of them gave much thought about doing their part.
The Christmas holiday seems to bring with it brotherly love,
Most likely orchestrated from the Lord up above.
With the clock still ticking and the darkness still growing,
It was about time that the people got going.
The members pulled out with their cars and their trucks,
Said their goodbye’s and gave wishes for luck.
Then I heard the Manager exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
GOLF GOLF GOLF
Although winter started out very mild, it made up for it with a very cold second
half of January and a cold, snowy and icy February. It is now time to think about
spring. Taking down the Christmas lights, cleaning gutters, yard work and outside
house repairs. WRONG! As spring approaches its time to get out the golf bag
and clean up the clubs.
The golf outing will again be held at Cedarbrook Golf Course on Saturday
June 9, 2007 with an 8 AM shotgun start. Last year’s outing was a huge success
with 160 golfers including guests. The outing will be limited to the first 144
golfers that respond. No exceptions!! They will not take carts from their other
course to allow for more golfers. Please get your money in early so you are not
shut out. All golfers must be members of Local 449 - This year’s price $70.00
We will be playing on the “Gold” course. Last year we played on the “Red”
course. We alternate between both great courses every year. We also will have the
“real time” standings of the top 10 teams on the golf cart computer screen. This
was new last year and was a big hit.
THE ENTRY FORM WILL BE MAILED OUT SHORTLY, please remember
that when mailing your money in, you specify whom else you wish to golf with.
Take a moment now to mark your calendar for Saturday June 9, 2007.
The Fraternal Committee has recommended appropriations for social
events that are sponsored by the Unions Fraternal Fund. These appropriations
were approved by a special order of business at the membership
meeting on February 2, 2007.
9, 2006 due to the resignation of Former Financial Secretary -Treasurer
XV11, Section 2, paragraph 2, which states, “If a salaried officer resigns, dies or
is recalled from office, there shall be a special election the following December.
All other offices filled through appointment shall be up for the special election.”
There were seven positions or offices that were required to participate in this Special
Election. The successful officers will complete the one year term of the previously
elected officers until the next General Election is held, and the successful
candidates take office on January 1, 2008.
The following officers were sworn in by Business Manager and Former
CHRISTMAS PARTY 2006
The Annual Christmas Party was held on
Saturday December 16, 2006 at the Union Hall.
One Saturday afternoon in December the Union
Hall becomes a temporary home for Santa Claus.
Santa has become so familiar with our Christmas Party his reindeer use
“autopilot” to drop Santa off for the party.
Our not so secret Santa, Rich Campbell Sr. sat with children four
hours. During this time, Rich learned what all the "hot" toys were for
Christmas 2006. Rich has become so popular as Santa that next year
the Fraternal Committee is exploring the possibility of two lines – one
for the little ones and the other for adults.
After their visit with Santa, the children received a gift certificate
from “Toys R Us” and a treat bag of candy. Remo’s Catering provided
lunch for all that attended.
The children and their families had a great time. The Christmas
Party is a place to visit with friends during the holiday season. The Fraternal
Committee looks forward to the Christmas Party, as always next
years party 2007 is in the planning stages.
