END OF SEASON TRANSCRIPTS
(On if there is a position group that could remain untouched entering 2014 – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I feel like our secondary is a group,
three of the four starters were rookies, I expect them to all take a big jump next year. Alan Ball, I thought for a guy that’s in his first year as a starter
he came in and did a really nice job. Coach can talk more about that, but we look forward to D-Mac (Demetrius McCray), a seventh-round pick out
of Appalachian State, he came in and started against Seattle, the third game of the year and held his own. We got him some playing time the rest
of the year and he did a really nice job on special teams. He’s a guy that fits our mold of what we’re looking for in players. You’re going to see some
guys that can come up and grown and get better. With the stability of our coaching staff, another year with our coaching staff and another year in
the system, I think you’re going to see improvement just from familiarity.”
(On if the starting free safety is on the current roster or is that a priority – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I wouldn’t say it’s a high priority.”
(On the upcoming schedule for the personnel and coaching departments – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “At about 12:30 today, we’re going to go
home and be off until Monday. That’s our next week. But starting from there, I think our coaches need a break and I think it’s important for them to
get away. I think I was telling somebody, from the start of training camp to now, they may have had three days away from this building with the bye
week. I think they need time to reflect and they’re doing their end-of-season evaluations right now in our computer system and we’ll let those sit for
a couple weeks and when we come back, we’ll talk about those. I think it’s important to get their perspective two or three weeks after the season,
but I think right now, they’re still in the heat of the moment of our last game or our last loss and things that went wrong. Then, really evaluate our
roster over the course of the year. Then, from that time all the way through the offseason they’ll really dig-into scheme and a lot of different things.”
(On the process following the season – Head Coach Gus Bradley) “I’ve had an opportunity, and I’m not completely finished yet, but to sit down with
each one of our assistant coaches on a one-on-one. And it hasn’t been a 10-minute talk; some have gone on over an hour. Before all of that started
we met as a staff, and I agree with Dave. We need time off as coaches and as assistant coaches, I think that you have a different perspective if you
get away from it for a while and then to come back. My challenge was, ‘That’s all good, take a break, go enjoy yourself, now get back and we have to
get to work, man. We have to find a way.’ I’m not talking about getting better personnel, compete, find a way to get better, I challenged each one of
them to say, ‘How are you going to get better What do you know What do you know now that you didn’t know about yourself How are you going
to improve as a coach How are you going to be a better leader How are you going to challenge these guys What are we going to do about the
defense What are we going to do about the pass-rush Let’s look at yards per carry. How come this happened’ Just keep competing, that’s great for
the players, but we need to do it as well as coaches. I think our coaches are really looking forward to that. I know I am. I can’t wait to get in that
room and tear it apart, along with meeting with Dave and the scouting (department) to look at personnel.”
(On what he will personally do to make himself a better coach – Head Coach Gus Bradley) “I know that you do it somewhat during the season, I think
you talk to people. I know for me, a lot of it is watching opponents, watching the number-one third-down defense in the league, watch the best
offensive red-zone team in the league. Then, look at it and see what’s going on. I try to do that week-to-week and just take a look at it to make sure
we’re always ahead of the game, but I think that’s what you have to capture in the offseason. You have to do a tremendous amount of studies. ‘How
do we play stacks How do we play bunches What’s effective What’s not How come we failed here What do we need to do to improve How can
we get our terminology Is what Jedd Fisch saying in his position meeting the same as what Ron Middleton is saying the same as Terry Richardson’
They’re all saying the same things but using different language, ‘Well, let’s use the same language. Let’s tighten this up and allow us to be better
teachers.’ All those things that are going on.”
(On if the Jaguars are confirmed for the Senior Bowl – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “We are not officially confirmed.”
(On the benefits of coaching the Senior Bowl for a coaching staff – Head Coach Gus Bradley) “I think it’s awesome. I think it’s a great opportunity.
I did it one year and was part of it when we did it in Tampa and I think it’s great. I know our coaches, I told them to be prepared it could be a
possibility. They will have some time off and then we get back. It’s a great evaluation tool. It’s maybe better for us as coaches instead of sitting in
our rooms watching tape over and over again; we can evaluate all aspects of the game. I don’t want to make a habit of it but as long as we have this
opportunity we need to take advantage of it.”
(On Jaguars coaches in the East-West All-Star Game – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “We do have two coaches coaching the East-West game. Terry
Richardson and Ron Middleton were chosen by the league.”
(On if the Senior Bowl is something you’d like to do – Head Coach Gus Bradley) “If this is the situation we’re in and it presents this opportunity then
we’re going to make the most of it.”
(On the partnership between himself and Gus Bradley and how their relationship has progressed – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I don’t think there
were any major surprises. I think we each kind of found out what we like to do and what we don’t like to do and we kind of at one point in time made
an analogy of building a house in terms of, ‘I’m interested in the living room and the big screen TV and he’s interested in the garage. You take care of
the garage and I’ll take care of the TV and if you have any ideas or suggestions come and let me know.’ So I think no surprises. I think it’s exceeded
my expectations to be quite honest with you and I know our owner feels the same. Shad knows the importance of our relationship and us building
this together and having the same vision and beliefs. There has been nothing that’s come up that’s been a major surprise.”
(On the overall quarterback class in the 2014 draft – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I think there’s a lot, like I said, we’re not sure exactly who’s
going to be available in this class; there’s still a handful of unknowns. And then there’s a lot of evaluation that has to take place by Gus, our position
coaches, our scouts and our Pro department, so I would prefer to reserve judgment on that until a later date.”
(On Maurice Jones-Drew’s contract and where RB ranks among offseason priorities – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “The same thing with the quarterback;
I think we need to upgrade. We’re always looking to upgrade all positions. I think like Gus said step two is to raise that standard of acceptance
and we do have to address that. We always have to have a contingency plan in place for all positions.”
(On the priority of Maurice Jones-Drew’s contract – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I think we have to sit down with the coaches in a couple of
weeks and see where they’re at with that too.”
(On upgrading the roster, looking at your own free agents first – General Manager Dave Caldwell) “I think it’s important to look at not only to look
at the guys on our roster but what’s available and make sure that we don’t get worse. I think it’s important to say what can we really address in the
draft, what can we really address in free agency and then it’s not a good market out there for position X let’s make sure we get Clay Harbor back for
instance, or Sam Young or someone like that because we may not be able to get that in the draft.”
