Thank you. PADV exceeds its goal!
Hearts with Hope raises $700,000
John Rice, vice chair of GE and HWH co-chair; Cathy Willis
Spraetz, president and CEO of PADV; Cammie Rice, HWH
co-chair; Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Mayor Shirley Franklin.
The Rices decided to serve as co-chairs of HWH after learning how
great the problem of domestic violence is in metro Atlanta.
Genevieve Bos, Pink Magazine; Andre DeWinter, DeWinter Inc.;
Bobbi DeWinter, Palm Inc. and Jacqueline Welch, Rock-Tenn
Company. All four served on the HWH Host Committee.
Verizon Wireless, GE, Avon, UPS and others joined
Partnership Against Domestic Violence for its 20th
annual Hearts with Hope and raised $700,000 to benefit
battered women and their children in metro Atlanta.
PADV surpassed its $500,000 goal by $200,000 at the
black-tie affair that featured dinner, live entertainment, and
silent and live auctions. HWH is the signature fundraiser
and stewardship event for PADV, raising approximately
half of PADV’s general operating budget. With these funds,
PADV provides shelter, clothing, food and a variety of
support services to battered women and their children.
Alge Crumpler, former tight end for the Atlanta Falcons, and John
Rice, HWH co-chair. Crumpler was honored with the Hope Award
for his efforts to raise awareness about domestic violence.
“This year’s gala raised more money
than any other Hearts with Hope
because of the extraordinary leadership
of the Rices, the tireless efforts
of the host committee and PADV’s
board of directors.”
John and Cammie Rice co-chaired the gala, held February
23, 2008, at the InterContinental Hotel Buckhead. This
year’s gala raised more money than any other Hearts with
Hope because of the extraordinary leadership of the Rices,
the tireless efforts of the
host committee and PADV’s
board of directors. The
gala sold out five weeks in
advance and was attended by
a record-breaking 700 guests.
Program reduces homelessness
one woman at a time
PADV supportive housing initiative is a success
Recognizing the link between domestic violence and
homelessness, PADV provides supportive housing and
assistance to help bridge the gap between shelter and
independent living. Since 2007, PADV has operated 14
apartment units in Fulton and Gwinnett Counties for
domestic violence survivors and their children.
While enrolled in the program, survivors are provided
with up to two years of affordable housing and activities
that strengthen their financial self-sufficiency, such as debt
reduction, credit counseling and savings planning. PADV
also helps with emergency health and dental needs,
subsidized childcare, educational advancement and
job training.
Reminder: Need to purchase
high res image
Women who experience recent or ongoing domestic violence are far
more likely to face eviction than other women.
• Forty-six percent of homeless women reported
that they stayed in abusive relationships because
they had nowhere to go.
• PADV operates the only supportive housing
program for domestic violence survivors in
metro Atlanta.
Economic barriers make it difficult or impossible for
many domestic violence survivors to find permanent,
safe alternative housing. Unfortunately, with limited
options, many survivors return to their batterers to avoid
homelessness. In 2005, 50 percent of U.S. cities surveyed
reported that domestic violence is a primary cause
of homelessness. A little closer to home in metro
Atlanta, 39 percent of the homeless population are
women and children.
Natasha,* a self-determined mother of three, is a recent
program graduate. Moving to Atlanta three years ago with
an entrepreneurial spirit, Natasha hoped to start her own
business with her husband. That was until her husband
tried to kill her, shooting at her seven times. She escaped
and found refuge in PADV’s emergency Fulton shelter.
Making the situation even more difficult, Natasha was five
months pregnant.
With scarce financial resources and about to deliver
her baby, Natasha’s options were limited. Avoiding
homelessness, Natasha moved into PADV’s Supportive
Housing program and received affordable housing,
financial assistance and support.
While enrolled in PADV’s program, Natasha delivered
a healthy baby girl, bought a new car (her first car was
stolen while she was in shelter), and obtained a job as a
receptionist. She was quickly promoted to office manager.
Two years later, Natasha is safe, employed, financially
self-sufficient and ready to move on. Continuing with her
employer as a consultant, she has returned to her home
state to be near her family. Her estranged husband is
awaiting trial on aggravated assault charges.
PADV trains employers to avert workplace tragedies
Vincent J. Bove, CPP, was the keynote speaker at PADV’s sixth
annual “When Domestic Violence Goes to Work,” conference. Bove
urged attendees to recognize the warning signs of domestic violence
in the workplace and create a caring work environment. This
year’s conference attendance increased by 40 percent. Conference
evaluations indicated 100 percent of attendees thought the training
was a positive learning experience.
Cathy Willis Spraetz, CEO of PADV, and Dora Ward, domestic violence
survivor and guest speaker. Ward recounted to an audience of
145 how her employer did all of the right things to support her while
providing a safe work environment for her and her co-workers.
In her own words…
My past speaks volumes about my current life. I am
the product of three generations of domestic violence: my
grandmother, my mother and myself.
I met my abuser in high school. When I was 21, my partner
changed and became a controlling and abusive man. One
awful day, he took his belt and beat me with it, hitting me in
the face and shattering my teeth. I thought my love for him
would validate my love for myself. So I stayed – beaten,
bruised but still in love.
At times, I felt like the walking dead because my life was
not my own. When I thought things couldn’t get any worse,
God sent me a gift, the birth of my beautiful son.
My son’s eyes were the windows to my troubled heart. I
wish I could have stopped the violence that plagued and
destroyed our home and our new family, but I could not.
The pain and misery lasted three and a half years.
Billie Walker and her son. Walker, an outspoken advocate for PADV,
helps raise awareness about domestic violence.
“My life changed when I found PADV.
The organization helped me and my son
start our life over with new memories,
friends and accomplishments.”
My life changed when I found PADV. The organization
helped me and my son start our life over with new
memories, friends and accomplishments. While in a PADV
shelter, I received the emotional, financial and educational
support to jump-start my life. My son also received caring
support to help him process and understand his experiences
living in a violent home.
I now have a full-time job. I am a full-time college student
and I am a proud first-time homeowner. My son and I will
never forget our past, but we are optimistic about our future.
We recognize that had it not been for PADV, we would not
be free.
PADV’s Volunteers of the Year
Congratulations to Laura Heinlein & Kelly Castle
Laura Heinlein cofacilitates
the children’s
support group in the
Fulton shelter. Always
dependable, Heinlein
plans creative and fun
activities for the children.
Kelly Castle is the
quintessential “behind
the scenes” volunteer in
Gwinnett. Extraordinarily
reliable, Castle has been
known to defrost the freezer,
organize sheds and closets,
and even wrangle with a
fickle copy machine.
