Youcan’t say that about all nonprofits. You’re going to see good things fromPADV for many years to come.”Susan Carini is a writer/editor with an insatiablelove of storytelling. She purports to be incurably shy, aworkaholic, a keen observer, a family woman, and an aviddog lover. She began supporting PADV by donating her writingand editorial skills and answering the crisis line. In 2007,she became a PADV board member. Today she activelyparticipates on the board and continues as a volunteer, anannual donor, capital campaign supporter and, last year, aplanned gift donor.Susan Carini and Sable, her one-year-old Siberian husky. Susan isthe executive director of Emory’s Creative Group and former chairof Emory’s Commission on the Status of Women.Susan’s involvement with PADV is an enduring passion. She said, “If you get involved with a cause, why wouldyou ever not be involved with it?” She believes thatlifelong supporters make a strong nonprofit. This sentiment compelled Susan to make a major giftto PADV in her will. Though, she said, there is a sort of“unreality” about planning to do something at the time ofyour death, “The editor in me believes in planning.” Sheasked herself, “What is the best thing, the most productivething I can do with my assets?” Her answer was, “Give toan organization like PADV.” When asked why she chosePADV, Susan reflected and said: “You can see the decadesof hard work. There is a proven track record. You can’t saythat about all nonprofits. You’re going to see good thingsfrom PADV for many years to come.”Susan helped PADV launch its Planned Giving Campaign bypurchasing ad space in Emory Magazine. This ad was unveiled inconjunction with a new planned giving page on PADV’s Web site.To learn how a planned gift can benefit you and PADV,visit www.padv.org, and click on Donate and PlannedGiving. Gift planning has tax benefits and is usuallytransmitted through a will, trust, bequest or life insurancepolicy. Saint Mark hits the markfor supportive collaborationCommunity partnerships help stretch PADV’slimited resourcesIn the current economicclimate, communitypartnerships are vital forPADV to continue providinglifesaving programs and services to battered womenand their children. One exemplary community partneris Saint Mark United Methodist Church in Midtown. TheOutreach Ministry at Saint Mark is as varied and diverseas the people who enter its doors each Sunday morning.“Saint Mark has a long and vibrant history of socialjustice and advocacy, often on the cutting edge of socialchange,” said Rev. Phillip Thomason, minister of outreach& pastoral care. “It is important to the people of SaintMark to support PADV because it is our responsibility asa faith community to be involved in the lives of peoplewho are hurting or suffering. It is through our rich andvaried resources that we are able to be a part of breakingthe cycle of abuse.”For more than two years, Saint Mark has helped PADVwith housing relocation, space for trainings and meetings, financial and in-kind donations and supportive housing.“It is important to the people ofSaint Mark to support PADVbecause it is our responsibility as afaith community to be involved inthe lives of people who are hurtingor suffering.”Saint Mark also helped form the first taskforce to supportlesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) domesticviolence survivors in Georgia.Aisha * is one of many PADV clients to whom SaintMark has helped provide a fresh start. After escaping aphysically violent relationship, Aisha lived in a PADVshelter for an extended period. As an immigrant awaitingher work permit, she could not secure employment orhousing. Her pending status made her ineligible for alltransitional housing programs.* Pseudonymcontinued on page 3PADV improves accessto its legal services• The number of legal clients served in Fulton Countyincreased by 400 percent in a two-month period.• Last year PADV assisted 878 individuals in obtainingTemporary Protective Orders in Fulton andGwinnett Counties. From L to R: Chastity Rogers, Fulton legal advocate, and RobinTaylor, Fulton legal advocate volunteer, standing outside PADV’s newfacility at the Fulton County Courthouse. PADV has increased thenumber of clients served each month from 20 to 80 since acquiring thenew space in early March 2009.In March 2009, PADV and its Fulton County legalcommunity partner, Atlanta Volunteer LawyersFoundation (AVLF), moved into a new spacious officeprovided by and located within the Fulton CountyCourthouse. PADV honors its top volunteers“Our volunteers are more importantthan ever during this economicrecession. PADV volunteers helpus continue to meet the increasingdemand for our services.”how to survive since I was 16,” said Fay. “I understandwhat these women have been through. I know theirpain.” Fay’s past experiences help her bring empathy andauthenticity to the support group, showing the women thatthey can “make it on their own.”From L to R: Fay Josephs, Gwinnett volunteer of the year, andChristine Sisco, Fulton volunteer of the year. Fay and Christinewere recognized at PADV’s annual volunteer celebration, held at SixFeet Under.PADV celebrated National Volunteer AppreciationMonth by saluting two special individuals. Christine Siscoand Fay Josephs were honored with the Volunteer of theYear Award on April 20, 2009.“Both Christine and Fay have a track record of going theextra mile for PADV and the women and children weserve,” said Cathy Willis Spraetz, president and CEO.“Our volunteers are more important than ever during thiseconomic recession. PADV volunteers help us continue tomeet the increasing demand for our services.”Christine Sisco has volunteered for two and one-half yearsin the Fulton shelter Children’s Program. When asked whyshe loves volunteering, Christine said: “One of the biggestrewards for me is watching the progression that the childrenmake while in our program. For many of the new children,I see the trauma they’ve experienced. They are withdrawn, insecure and uncomfortable in their surroundings. Weekslater, they’ve learned to be kids again.”Fay Josephs has volunteered for four years. A support groupfacilitator, she is compassionate because she’s been downthe same road. Growing up in a violent home, “I had to learnAllene Pritchett, Gwinnett crisis line volunteer, andRobin Taylor, Fulton legal advocate volunteer, were alsorecognized in April for donating the most hours. Eventhough we only recognized four outstanding women, weappreciate the contributions and dedication of all of our249 volunteers. PADV conferenceprepared employersto tackle workplacedomestic violenceSpecial Report:PADV’s response tothe economic crisisWhile PADV is proud to report that we ended fiscal year2009 in the black, next year holds many uncertainties. Tocontinue to ensure sound management of your financialcontributions, we will execute the following strategies inFY2010:(1) Develop contingency plans to answer “what if”questions if revenue is reduced. From L to R: Ashley Palermo, attorney at law, Bryan Cave; JasmineWilliams Miller, director of programs, PADV; and April Ledom, assistant VP, employment manager, Federal Home Loan Bank ofAtlanta. These three served on a cross-disciplinary panel followingthe theatrical training. One hundred percent of attendees thought theconference was a positive learning experience.(2) Maintain strong reserves with approximately$1 million in unrestricted net assets.(3) Decrease spending for equipment, supplies, technology, communications and staff training.(4) Cut budgets, not programs. Maintain currentinitiatives to respond to the increase in need, but limitprogram growth and capital expansion.(5) Increase foundation and government grantsubmissions by 85 percent over CY2008.(6) Increase collaborative efforts with our partners forservices and funding.Nearly 100 corporate, government and nonprofit employees attendedPADV’s 2009 annual When Domestic Violence Goes to Work conference. One attendee summed it up by declaring, “It was an excellent program!Well researched, coordinated, facilitated and presented.”(7) Remain fiscally responsible and transparent aboutour economic standing and challenges. We are cuttingcosts, maintaining controls and keeping our moneysafe in amounts that are FDIC insured.(8) Diversify funding sources. Actively pursue economicstimulus funds and nongovernmental funders tomaintain services and balanced revenue.(9) Connect with our constituency at all levels. We arekeeping our direct mail and volunteer programs active, while working harder to personally engage ourmajor donors.(10) Stay optimistic. PADV will use the current crisis tosharply focus our efforts, recognize and involve ourbest donors and volunteers, and take new approachesthat are flexible and creative.Sketchworks, the cutting edge theatrical group, was also at the topof its game. By answering questions in character, the actors gave theaudience a unique perspective.4
