CITY OF LOMPOC<br />

DEFINITION:<br />

<strong>RESERVE</strong> <strong>POLICE</strong> <strong>OFFICER</strong> -- <strong>LEVEL</strong> <strong>II</strong><br />

Under immediate supervision <strong>of</strong> a peace <strong>of</strong>ficer possessing a basic certificate issued by <strong>the</strong><br />

Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) , on a regular or assigned<br />

shift, to perform general police work in <strong>the</strong> prevention and detection <strong>of</strong> crime and <strong>the</strong><br />

enforcement <strong>of</strong> law and order; to perform traffic enforcement and control; to carry out special<br />

assignments in specialized phases <strong>of</strong> police work; and to perform related work as required.<br />

The supervising peace <strong>of</strong>ficer must routinely be in <strong>the</strong> physical proximity <strong>of</strong> and available to<br />

<strong>the</strong> reserve <strong>of</strong>ficer; however, allowance is permitted for necessary temporary separations.<br />

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:<br />

The Reserve Police Officer Level <strong>II</strong> classification represents a training level part-time sworn<br />

position in law enforcement work as described in Penal Code Section 832.6(a) (2). The<br />

Reserve Police Officer Level <strong>II</strong> is engaged in a field training program approved by POST. The<br />

authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person as a peace <strong>of</strong>ficer extends only for <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person's specific<br />

assignment. This is <strong>the</strong> entry classification for all Reserve Police Officer appointees,<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>y possess <strong>the</strong> POST training requirements for Reserve Police<br />

Officer Level I.<br />

LICENSE REQUIRED:<br />

Possession <strong>of</strong> a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.<br />

Incumbents must possess pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> Module A and Module B <strong>of</strong> a<br />

POST certified Reserve Peace Officer Training Course or equivalent.<br />

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:<br />

On a regular or assigned shift in <strong>the</strong> immediate supervision <strong>of</strong> a peace <strong>of</strong>ficer, performs <strong>the</strong><br />

following: patrols assigned areas by car or foot; responds to calls for protection <strong>of</strong> life and<br />

property; conducts initial and follow-up investigations; develops, enforces, controls, and<br />

directs traffic when appropriate; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

law; warns drivers against illegal practices; makes arrests; testifies in court in connection with<br />

<strong>the</strong> prosecution <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fenders; serves warrants and subpoenas; administers first aid in<br />

emergency cases; answers complaints on such problems as civil disturbances, obnoxious<br />

animals, health code and local ordinance violations; investigates suspicious circumstances;<br />

makes property security checks; takes custody <strong>of</strong> lost and found property; performs crowd<br />

control, parade, or riot work; takes crime prevention measures and assists in controlling<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> juvenile delinquency; books

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:<br />

Must have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral<br />

turpitude;<br />

Must meet legal age requirements (minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 years <strong>of</strong> age);<br />

Must provide verification <strong>of</strong> satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> POST Reserve Officer Level<br />

<strong>II</strong> training requirements;<br />

Must periodically qualify to use firearms in accordance with <strong>City</strong> requirements;<br />

Must qualify in a background and psychological examination;<br />

Employees in this classification may be required to utilize respirators in <strong>the</strong> course<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir job duties or under emergency circumstance, and thus must be in<br />

compliance with General Industry Safety Order 5144. Employees shall not wear<br />

beards, mustaches, sideburns, facial hair or o<strong>the</strong>r conditions in such a manner<br />

that may prevent or interfere with establishing and maintaining a proper seal <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> respirator face mask. This requirement is implemented in order to insure<br />

<strong>the</strong> safety and health <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> employee.<br />
