DEFINITION:
RESERVE POLICE OFFICER -- LEVEL II
Under immediate supervision of a peace officer possessing a basic certificate issued by the
Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) , on a regular or assigned
shift, to perform general police work in the prevention and detection of crime and the
enforcement of law and order; to perform traffic enforcement and control; to carry out special
assignments in specialized phases of police work; and to perform related work as required.
The supervising peace officer must routinely be in the physical proximity of and available to
the reserve officer; however, allowance is permitted for necessary temporary separations.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The Reserve Police Officer Level II classification represents a training level part-time sworn
position in law enforcement work as described in Penal Code Section 832.6(a) (2). The
Reserve Police Officer Level II is engaged in a field training program approved by POST. The
authority of the person as a peace officer extends only for the duration of the person's specific
assignment. This is the entry classification for all Reserve Police Officer appointees,
regardless of whether or not they possess the POST training requirements for Reserve Police
Officer Level I.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
Incumbents must possess proof of satisfactory completion of Module A and Module B of a
POST certified Reserve Peace Officer Training Course or equivalent.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
On a regular or assigned shift in the immediate supervision of a peace officer, performs the
following: patrols assigned areas by car or foot; responds to calls for protection of life and
property; conducts initial and follow-up investigations; develops, enforces, controls, and
directs traffic when appropriate; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of the
law; warns drivers against illegal practices; makes arrests; testifies in court in connection with
the prosecution of offenders; serves warrants and subpoenas; administers first aid in
emergency cases; answers complaints on such problems as civil disturbances, obnoxious
animals, health code and local ordinance violations; investigates suspicious circumstances;
makes property security checks; takes custody of lost and found property; performs crowd
control, parade, or riot work; takes crime prevention measures and assists in controlling
problems of juvenile delinquency; books

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral
turpitude;
Must meet legal age requirements (minimum of 18 years of age);
Must provide verification of satisfactory completion of POST Reserve Officer Level
II training requirements;
Must periodically qualify to use firearms in accordance with City requirements;
Must qualify in a background and psychological examination;
Employees in this classification may be required to utilize respirators in the course
of their job duties or under emergency circumstance, and thus must be in
compliance with General Industry Safety Order 5144. Employees shall not wear
beards, mustaches, sideburns, facial hair or other conditions in such a manner
that may prevent or interfere with establishing and maintaining a proper seal of
the respirator face mask. This requirement is implemented in order to insure
the safety and health of the employee.
