This preconference explores the essential functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> tribal archival organizations and covers some <strong>of</strong><br />

the elements <strong>of</strong> starting and organizing a repository,<br />

including acquiring administrative support,<br />

establishing priorities, and obtaining financial support.<br />

A panel <strong>of</strong> experts will address topics specific to<br />

starting and organizing tribal archives and share<br />

information on their specific archival organizations,<br />

as well as citing case studies and lessons learned.<br />

Journey to Successful Fundraising<br />

The Potlatch Fund is a Native-led community<br />

foundation which has a mission to increase<br />

philanthropy in Northwest Indian Country. In this<br />

pre-conference, presenters will examine philanthropy<br />

in Native communities, discuss the challenges to<br />

increasing philanthropy for tribal entities, explore<br />

the differences between Native American structures<br />

and their different accountability arrangements,<br />

share information on busting the myth that all tribes<br />

are wealthy and do not need support, and provide<br />

detailed information that will enable participants to<br />

seek funding from a variety <strong>of</strong> sources. Workbooks<br />

and CDs will be provided.<br />

This pre-conference is an intensive, condensed version<br />

<strong>of</strong> the two-day training session traditionally presented<br />

by PastPerfect S<strong>of</strong>tware. Brian Gomez, president <strong>of</strong><br />

Past Time S<strong>of</strong>tware, the developers <strong>of</strong> PastPerfect,<br />

will provide an overview <strong>of</strong> the s<strong>of</strong>tware and review<br />

some <strong>of</strong> its tools including managing collections,<br />

customizing reports, creating virtual exhibits, and<br />

managing membership and fundraising activities.<br />

Participants will travel by bus to the Sam Noble<br />

Oklahoma Museum <strong>of</strong> Natural History, the National<br />

Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the<br />

Oklahoma History Center where they will receive<br />

guided tours and demonstrations related to the care<br />

<strong>of</strong> American Indian objects. Attendees will receive<br />

the book Caring for American Indian Objects, edited<br />

by Sharilyn Ogden.<br />
