PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE AND RESEARCH
1975 Rutgers University, I conducted a one year research thesis developing a
practical and efficient diagnostic method for the mass screening of lead
levels in children. The children's saliva was analyzed for lead content using
stimulated mixed salivary fluid. The values were determined using atomic
spectroscopy and then were compared to blood samples taken
simultaneously.
1977 Public Health Service, Externship
National Caries Program
National Institute of Health
Bethesda, Maryland
Participated in a research project at the National Caries Program with Dr.
Paul Keyes. A major objective of this program is to develop a vaccine
against dental caries.

Alan B. Rosenthal - Page 5
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE AND RESEARCH (continued)
We also developed a quantitatively reproducible radioactive assay for
determining the adherence and coherence under various conditions, using
Streptococcus Mutans.
1978 Public Health Services, Externship
Assignment: Alaska Native Medical Health Center
Anchorage, Alaska
Rotations were in various departments within the hospital: pedodontics,
periodontics, endodontics, prosthetics, oral surgery, ophthalmology,
hematology, ENT, orthopedics, anesthesiology, general surgery, emergency
room, radiology and obstetrics. I scrubbed and assisted in more than twenty
general surgery cases, including tympanoplasties and mastoidectomies,
hysterectomies, caesarian sections, burn victims, laminectomies,
amputations, debridement and bronchoscopy. Assisted and performed with
oral surgeons, osteotomies, open and closed reductions of trauma fractures,
sequestomy due to osteomyelitis and numerous extractions of impacted third
molars, and placed Erich cast bars in patients needing intermaxillary
fixation, all utilizing IV sedation.
