Italy is the world’s eleventh largest industrial economy;; GDP is $2.1 tr. The Italian economy has changed<br />

dramatically since the end of World War II;; from an agriculturally based economy it has developed into an<br />

industrial state. The country has few natural resources, and most raw materials needed for manufacturing<br />

and more than 80% of the country’s energy are imported.<br />

Italy’s economic strength is in the processing and manufacturing of goods, primarily in small and medium<br />

<br />

industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less-developed, welfare-dependent, agricultural<br />

south, with high unemployment. Italy’s economic growth averaged only 0.8% in the period 2001-2008;; in<br />

2008 GDP decreased 1.0%, largely due to the global economic crisis and its impact on exports and domestic<br />

demand. 2010 saw a return to growth, with the economy expanding by just over 1%.<br />

<br />

2010 reached close to the record high of 8.6%, with this considerably higher in the agricultural south than<br />

the more prosperous industrial north of the country. While falling in 2011, it remains above 8% making it<br />

among the highest in the OECD. The Italian economy is affected by a large underground economy - worth<br />

some 15% of Italy’s GDP. This production is not subject, of course, to taxation and thus remains a source of<br />

lost revenue to the local and central government.<br />

The Italian government is seeking to rein in government spending, but faces a severe economic constraint:<br />

<br />

2010 due to the costs of servicing Italy’s debt. As a result, ratings agencies Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s<br />

lowered their outlook on Italy mid-way through 2011.<br />

Tax rises are driving the wealthy population out of the country, such that in 2008 their overall numbers<br />

declined. However, one of the largest tax amnesties in Europe was conducted by Italy, which attracted<br />

or more, however this is an underestimate as many avoid declaring their true income to avoid tax. The tax<br />

The amount of capital repatriated or regularised by banks contributed to the creation of a critical mass necessary<br />

for the development of a true wealth management industry in Italy. Italy’s high wages and costs put its<br />

manufacturers at risk of losing <strong>market</strong> share to competitors in poorer nations.<br />

Italian craftsmen argue that their quality and fashion sense offer a competitive edge. 50% of Italian HNWIs<br />

are small-medium entrepreneurs and/or an independent professionals, whilst the other 50% is made up of<br />

celebrities and heirs. As a result of the credit crunch, Italian HNWIs pulled back from investing in local stocks<br />

more than other developed nations, and remained quite bearish on foreign equities. They remain amongst the<br />

most cautious investors.<br />

Much of Italy’s hidden wealth has been created by successful family business in Italy’s more entrepreneurial<br />

areas, mostly in Northern regions. This is pushing the foreign companies to try to extend their networks deeper<br />
