1878
Nursing in Cyprus
• Historically there is no evidence of Nursing
Education and Nursing Practice in Cyprus,
prior to its occupation by the British in
1878.
• The immediate need for the provision of
healthcare was identified and hospitals
were built urgently in every district and
nurses and doctors were recruited from
England.

1945
The School of Nursing
• In 1955, a planned curriculum for a course
in General Nursing, which led to
registration, was officially commenced.
• The programme was organised with the
assistance of the World Health
Organization with the aim of establishing
Nursing Education in Cyprus “on a high
international level”.

1992
The School of Nursing
• Only one available educational
programme of 3 years duration.
• The nurses that had graduated
from the two years course were
given the opportunity to upgrade
their qualifications.

Education in Midwifery
• Until 1981 Courses were also available for
midwives of a two years duration.
• From 1981 the School of Nursing offered a
post basic education in midwifery of one
academic year which later became 18
months to comply with EU Directives.
• The education of midwives is now offered
by the Cyprus University of Technology.

courses of one academic year in:
• Community Nursing
• Intensive Care Nursing
• Peri-operative Nursing

The School of Nursing
• The School of Nursing played an
important role in the protection and
promotion of health of the citizens
during the years from 1945 until 2007.
• In 2007 it accepted its last students
who graduated, with a Diploma in
General Nursing, in 2010.

• In 1947 a School for Mental
Health Nursing was
established.
• This was a landmark for the
provision of mental health
care up until today.

1960
In 1960 Cyprus gained its
independence and Nursing
Education came under the
responsibility of the Ministry
of Health of the Republic of
Cyprus.

2004
• In 2004 Nursing Education
joined the newly established
Cyprus University of
Technology, which upgraded
Nursing to degree level and
offered new dimensions to the
nursing profession.

2007
• In 2007 the first nursing students were
admitted and the first students with a
Nursing Degree graduated in 2011.
• Simultaneously from 2008, a two-year
programme of upgrading the diplomas
of the existing nursing staff to
university degree run for about 2000
nurses.

Nursing and Midwifery Law
• The most important landmark of the
development of Nursing in Cyprus was
the amendment of Nursing and
Midwifery Law in 1988.
• For the first time, the nursing
profession was defined, since the Law
clarified who the nurse is and who is
entitled to perform nursing.

Establishment of the
Nursing Services
• One of the most significant
achievements, not only for the
development of the nursing profession but
for the delivery of healthcare to the whole
population of Cyprus.
• It has given nursing a voice, at Ministerial
level, in policy making in all matters
concerning health care in Cyprus.
