1878<br />

<strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cyprus</strong><br />

• Historically there is no evidence of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Education and <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cyprus</strong>,<br />

prior to its occupation by the British <strong>in</strong><br />

1878.<br />

• The immediate need for the provision of<br />

healthcare was identified and hospitals<br />

were built urgently <strong>in</strong> every district and<br />

nurses and doctors were recruited from<br />

England.<br />

1945<br />

The School of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

• In 1955, a planned curriculum for a course<br />

<strong>in</strong> General <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, which led to<br />

registration, was officially commenced.<br />

• The programme was organised with the<br />

assistance of the World Health<br />

Organization with the aim of establish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Education <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cyprus</strong> “on a high<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational level”.<br />

Education <strong>in</strong> Midwifery<br />

• Until 1981 Courses were also available for<br />

midwives of a two years duration.<br />

• From 1981 the School of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> offered a<br />

post basic education <strong>in</strong> midwifery of one<br />

academic year which later became 18<br />

months to comply with EU Directives.<br />

• The education of midwives is now offered<br />

by the <strong>Cyprus</strong> University of Technology.<br />

The School of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

• The School of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> played an<br />

important role <strong>in</strong> the protection and<br />

promotion of health of the citizens<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the years from 1945 until 2007.<br />

• In 2007 it accepted its last students<br />

who graduated, with a Diploma <strong>in</strong><br />

General <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, <strong>in</strong> 2010.<br />

2004<br />

• In 2004 <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Education<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed the newly established<br />

<strong>Cyprus</strong> University of<br />

Technology, which upgraded<br />

<strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> to degree level and<br />

offered new dimensions to the<br />

nurs<strong>in</strong>g profession.<br />

2007<br />

• In 2007 the first nurs<strong>in</strong>g students were<br />

admitted and the first students with a<br />

<strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Degree graduated <strong>in</strong> 2011.<br />

• Simultaneously from 2008, a two-year<br />

programme of upgrad<strong>in</strong>g the diplomas<br />

of the exist<strong>in</strong>g nurs<strong>in</strong>g staff to<br />

university degree run for about 2000<br />

nurses.<br />

<strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and Midwifery Law<br />

• The most important landmark of the<br />

development of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Cyprus</strong> was<br />

the amendment of <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and<br />

Midwifery Law <strong>in</strong> 1988.<br />

• For the first time, the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

profession was def<strong>in</strong>ed, s<strong>in</strong>ce the Law<br />

clarified who the nurse is and who is<br />

entitled to perform nurs<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
