Twenty-one students joined<br />

Charlie, Barbara, Emily, and<br />

Sarah at the national conference<br />

<strong>of</strong> the National Collegiate <strong>Honors</strong><br />

Council held in Salt Lake City for fi ve<br />

days starting just before Halloween.<br />

Seventeen <strong>of</strong> the twenty-one students<br />

were involved in at least one presentation,<br />

some <strong>of</strong> them more.<br />

(Biological Sciences), Richard A.<br />

Becker (History and Geological Sciences),<br />

Isaac Record (Electrical Engineering),<br />

and Charlie Slavin , Director,<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Honors</strong> <strong>College</strong> presented Honor<br />

Codes and <strong>Honors</strong> <strong>College</strong>s: Tautology,<br />

Contradiction, or ... ? at the National<br />

Collegiate <strong>Honors</strong> Council annual conference<br />

in Salt Lake City, 30 October<br />

– 3 November. Slavin also was part<br />

<strong>of</strong> a panel on Taking <strong>Honors</strong> to the Next<br />

Level: From Program to <strong>College</strong> (with<br />

Patricia MacCorquodale, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Arizona, and Steve Wainscott, Clemson<br />

<strong>University</strong>) as part <strong>of</strong> 'Developing<br />

in <strong>Honors</strong>" where he described the history<br />

and process at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Maine</strong>. Also at the conference, <strong>Honors</strong><br />

student Robin Arnold (Geological<br />

Sciences), presented The <strong>Honors</strong><br />

Experience as a Non-Traditional Student.<br />

Moira Reilly (Psychology) participated<br />

in a student fi shbowl discussion on<br />

Teaching and Learning in <strong>Honors</strong> .<br />

Student bookshelf roundtables were<br />

led by Elizabeth Burnett (English) on<br />

Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge and<br />

by Nicholas Robertson (Philosophy)<br />

on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Philosophical<br />

Investigations. At the Idea<br />

Exchange, Amaranta Ruiz-Nelson<br />

(New Media and Business) and Jonathan<br />

Beever (Philosophy) presented<br />

an Online <strong>Honors</strong> Program Theses<br />

Archive and Jonathan Dunn (Electrical<br />

Engineering) and Jennifer Merchant<br />

(Communication) presented Climbing<br />

a Mountain: <strong>Honors</strong> Reading. Anthony<br />

Antonition (Business) and Amy Van<br />

R O M H O N O R S<br />

Der Wende (Political Science) presented<br />

as part <strong>of</strong> How to Learn Science at an<br />

<strong>Honors</strong> Conference organized by Martin<br />

Brock <strong>of</strong> Eastern Kentucky <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>Honors</strong> students presenting at the<br />

poster session included Heidi Crosby<br />

(Biochemistry): And You Thought Lima<br />

Beans Were Bad: Surviving on a Carbon<br />

Monoxide Diet; Matthew Jura (Mathematics):<br />

Unprovable Truth: A Study <strong>of</strong><br />

In addition to attending numerous<br />

conference sessions, the students also<br />

took advantage <strong>of</strong> the opportunities<br />

that Salt Lake City has to <strong>of</strong>fer and<br />

were treated to a wonderful dinner at<br />

the Merchants’ home -- Jenna’s family!<br />
