ArtWalk Ventura Street Fair
New public art to be dedicated on Ventura Avenue July 11
Join Ventura Mayor Mike Tracy for the unveiling of our city’s newest public art work,
“Wall Play,” (pictured at left) installed at the Ventura Avenue Adult Center (VAAC), 550
N. Ventura Ave., on Thursday, July 11, at 3 pm. Local artist Helle Scharling-Todd also
recently completed two new mosaic murals, “Seashells” and “Seaweed” on the
Beachfront Promenade (pictured right). The artist
worked with the Westside Community Council,
Ventura County Arts Council and City's Public Art
Commission to generate support and funding to realize her proposal to enhance the
VAAC. For two decades she has created beautiful mosaics that grace several city
facilities including the Barranca Vista Center, Olivas Adobe, and 420 East Santa Clara
Street (Urban Encore, formerly a city senior center), in addition to her public art
commission Westside Stories on Ventura and Stanley Avenues.
The City of Ventura has had a long history working with community artists and as the founder
Ventura ArtWalk in 1992 is excited to see how the event is continuing to evolve under the
leadership of the all-volunteer ArtWalk committee now leading the helm. On July 20 and 21
city’s Westside, bringing artists, residents and tourists together to experience Ventura’s unique art scene. This year’s event
Provider and owner Steve Yapp. Muralist MB Hanrahan in partnership with the City of Ventura, Bell Arts Factory and Vita
Art Center worked with community youth and volunteers to create a work of art out of one of the PODS® container focused
on honeybees, pollination, interdependence of Ventura Co. agriculture, foliculture and bees, and the underlying threat of
hive collapse. Hanrahan says, “I see the direct connection between art studios and beehives, art studios as a hive of
creativity, a place for the pollination of ideas". The completed PODS® container will be on display in east Ventura along the
Victoria corridor June 20 th -July 18 th and then relocated to the intersection of Main and California Streets for ArtWalk
weekend. Since 1991, the City of Ventura has sponsored both temporary and permanent public art installations throughout
the community and showcasing the works of Ventura County artists in the Municipal Art Collection on display at City Hall.
The gallery will be open for tours of the collection Saturday, July 20 th between 12-4 PM. The Municipal Art Collection
City Hall’s Centenary Sculpture by Matthew Furmanski is unveiled July 25 at 4 pm
The unveiling of a new commemorative public art sculpture by Matthew Furmanski at Ventura
City Hall caps a month-long centennial celebration of this historic building on Thursday, July 25,
2013 at 4 pm – outdoors on the front patio of the City Hall Atrium at 501 Poli Street. The formal
dedication marks the one hundred year anniversary of the official opening of the former
courthouse. Early in 2013 the City of Ventura Public Art Commission looked to commemorate
centenary of landmark building that is now San Buenaventura City Hall by commissioning a
new public sculpture as a permanent work in the Municipal Art Collection displayed at City Hall.
The commissioners requested the new artwork have an historic twist and use original marble
slab or white glazed terra cotta – salvaged during the building’s 1974 restoration and
conversion from courthouse to city hall – to celebrate a majestic building rich in detail and
materials both inside and out. The Commission selected from several proposals one by
Matthew Furmanski, a professor of art and sculpture at California State University at Channel
Islands (CSUCI). The artist with a Masters of Fine Art, Sculpture from Claremont Graduate University (CA) is internationally
known for his conceptual sculpture. His works combine “physicality” with “the intensity of an idea to create a catalyst” for
“imaginative leaps in the minds of those who encounter them.” For his winning concept called Spolia the artist proposed a
13

five-foot assembled sculpture he calls “a contemporary representation of a pillar, or a column, made partially from (3)
recycled terracotta tiles” and “a sculptural framework, like a setting for a gemstone, and the terracotta being like the gems
set in it.” Spolia is a modern art historical term. Spolia (Latin, “spoils”) is the re-use of earlier building material or decorative
sculpture on new monuments. “I find the metaphor of a pillar or column invigorating for what institutions represent in our
society. Pillars and columns have long been a symbol of strength and longevity,” said the artist. “Think of my pillar/column
as an exploded drawing (DaVinci-esque), with each of the important elements of the column – capital, finial, main post,
trunk and base – standing as a metaphor. This is, after all, a work of art meant to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of
the building, and institution. I would like Spolia to function as both a work of art and a commemorative object.” For more
“Convergence” of Dance, Music & Art During July 19 ArtWalk
“Convergence” Photo by Donna Granata
Ventura County Ballet Company’s (VCBC) DAnce ART, a traveling dance ensemble composed of
the company’s finest ballet dancers, and Focus on the Masters (FOTM), a non-profit art appreciation
program that documents, preserves and presents the works and lives of accomplished
contemporary artists, will combine its talents to introduce a unique, awe-inspiring, one-time event
called “Convergence” that will kick-off the annual ArtWalk Ventura on Friday, July 19. A first-of-itskind
concept masterminded by nationally recognized photographer and FOTM Founder Donna
Granata, “Convergence” will be a live, multimedia benefit performance event featuring dance, music and fine art at its best,
celebrating the spirit of collaboration and a shared passion for the arts. Downtown Ventura’s location at 20 N. Oak St., made
available by owner Robert Gurfield, will set the stage for the event that will combine the skills of accomplished ballet
dancers, renowned visual artists, an expert choreographer and world-renowned classical musicians. The audience will be
captivated by a beautifully choreographed dance piece from Brett Weidlich and performed by VCBC’s DAnce ART as
projections of paintings by ArtWalk Artist of Distinction and FOTM-documented painter Gerd Koch bathe the dancers in
expressionistic color and texture. Providing the music for the performance will be two-time Grammy-nominated international
composer and pianist Miguel del Aguila, who will premiere “Silence,” his newest composition for piano and violin which he
will perform with celebrated violinist Yue Deng. Attendees will also enjoy an art exhibition featuring artists’ works that have
been documented in the FOTM program that will be showcased throughout the weekend, as well as a live auction featuring
Granata’s exquisite photographs of the dancers and other unique items. All proceeds from the event will benefit FOTM’s
educational outreach programs. “This unique performance embodies everything the ArtWalk represents – world-class
artistry at its finest,” Granata said. “We’re so proud to showcase this unique alliance of extraordinary artists with the
unmatched talents of our international musicians. ‘Convergence’ will be an affair to remember.”
BiJian Fan was born in Beijing, China where he learned paper art
from his grandmother. Fan now resides in Camarillo where he
creates cutting-edge sculpture in metal, polymer and other
materials. He explores aesthetic and physical properties of various
materials, transforming 2D static material into 3D kinetic sculptures
(his “Year of the Snake” pictured at right). Peggy Pownall (her
“Predestination” pictured at left) received her Bachelor of Arts from Pepperdine University, and
16

continued her studies at the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy. She became an Artist-In-Residence at Studio
Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo in 2008, and has taught art in Thousand Oaks for many years. Pownall’s work
incorporates mixed media, often stitching and layering old sewing patterns from bygone eras, revealing old brand names
and drawings from the packages. Her current body of work references the traditional feminine world and the concept of
creating order out of life’s chaos.
taking it to new heights, with the addition of PODS® Containers transformed into mini art
galleries. These decked-out containers will be strategically placed and highlighted among
ArtWalk’s self-guided tour of dozens of galleries, studios throughout Downtown and Westside,
thanks to the generous donation of Steve Yapp and PODS Moving & Storage.
The National Gallery, London, is offering a major exhibition on one of the most startling and fascinating
artists of all-time, Johannes Vermeer, most popularly known as the painter of “The Girl with a Pearl
Earring.” Vermeer painted little more than 30 works that still exist, and the National Gallery has chosen
Vermeer's life and, in doing so, shows in detail many other of the artist's great works. The program will
suit the wide audience who adore Vermeer's work and who want both to see it in detail and to learn
Rubicon Theatre Company Summer Youth Theatre Programs offers a new class that explores
the famous “method” acting technique
Information: Jessica Savoy (805) 667-2912, ext. 230 outreach@rubicontheatre.org
Rubicon Theatre Company will offer a new acting class taught by professional actor Jonathan
Drahos. This program, entitled The Acting Intensive, will be the newest addition to Rubicon’s
extensive offering of summer educational workshops. Now celebrating their 11th year, these
programs have focused on developing skills and techniques such as: basic theatre terminology,
confidence building, stage presence, proper voice techniques, developing an awareness of body
language through character work, and other fundamental techniques through improvisation, scene
study and theatre games. Nearly 100 students each year have participated with nearly 60% of them
receiving some form of financial assistance. The Summer Acting Intensive will open students up to
discover creative, inspired acting choices, using the “method” techniques of Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner and Uta
Hagen. They will learn how to use movement, voice, and heightened “actions” to bring a scene to life. These unique
techniques give actors a “tool kit” to use when approaching a variety of texts from Neil Simon to William Shakespeare. With
a limited class size of 12, this course offers close interaction and individual attention. The workshop will culminate in a final
presentation of the students’ work for family and friends. The tuition for the class is $310 and is open for ages 17 and up.
The class will meet for eight 3-hour sessions from July 22 to August 14. Classes will be held at Rubicon Theatre Company
on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm. For more information and to register online, please visit the Education and
Outreach section of www.rubicontheatre.org. The registration deadline is July 17, 2013. JONATHAN DRAHOS has been
dedicated to professional acting and directing and to the theoretical, historical and performative study of classical and
contemporary theatre for the past twenty-five years. As an actor, he has worked in all media including Broadway, Off-
Broadway, television and feature films. As artistic director of the Uprising Theatre Company -- and as an independent
director -- he has extensive experience directing and vocal coaching a wide range of styles and periods, including
Shakespeare and Musical Theatre. Since joining the Rubicon staff last summer, Jonathan has directed the Theatre Camp
musical Captain Louie Jr. and served as the Dramaturge/Verse Coach for the Fearless Shakespeare production of As You
Like It, as well as the upcoming Romeo and Juliet. He is a Stanislavski-based acting and directing teacher and has broad
experience with the Alexander movement technique, stage combat, and Linklater-based voice and dialect techniques.
Jonathan holds a B.A. and M.F.A. in acting and directing, as well as a Ph.D. in Drama, Shakespearean and Marlovian
Narrative Verse Acting from the University of Birmingham, UK. He was recently published in the Shakespeare Institute
Review Journal and currently teaches courses in Acting/Voice/Movement in Theatre, Audition Technique, Theatre Ideology
and The American Musical Theatre at the University of Worcester, UK. Previously, Jonathan spent three years teaching
Shakespeare, Early Modern British Theatre History and 17th Century Literature at California State University, Northridge.
“Convergence” of Dance, Music & Art During July 19 ArtWalk
“Convergence” Photo by Donna Granata
Ventura County Ballet Company’s (VCBC) DAnce ART, a traveling dance
ensemble composed of the company’s finest ballet dancers, and Focus on the
Masters (FOTM), a non-profit art appreciation program that documents, preserves
and presents the works and lives of accomplished contemporary artists, will
combine its talents to introduce a unique, awe-inspiring, one-time event called
“Convergence” that will kick-off the annual ArtWalk Ventura on Friday, July 19. A
first-of-its-kind concept masterminded by nationally recognized photographer and
FOTM Founder Donna Granata, “Convergence” will be a live, multimedia benefit
performance event featuring dance, music and fine art at its best, celebrating the
spirit of collaboration and a shared passion for the arts. Downtown Ventura’s
location at 20 N. Oak St., made available by owner Robert Gurfield, will set the
stage for the event that will combine the skills of accomplished ballet dancers,
renowned visual artists, an expert choreographer and world-renowned classical
musicians. The audience will be captivated by a beautifully choreographed dance
piece from Brett Weidlich and performed by VCBC’s DAnce ART as projections of paintings by ArtWalk Artist of Distinction
and FOTM-documented painter Gerd Koch bathe the dancers in expressionistic color and texture. Providing the music for
the performance will be two-time Grammy-nominated international composer and pianist Miguel del Aguila, who will
premiere “Silence,” his newest composition for piano and violin which he will perform with celebrated violinist Yue Deng.
Attendees will also enjoy an art exhibition featuring artists’ works that have been documented in the FOTM program that will
be showcased throughout the weekend, as well as a live auction featuring Granata’s exquisite photographs of the dancers
and other unique items. All proceeds from the event will benefit FOTM’s educational outreach programs. “This unique
performance embodies everything the ArtWalk represents – world-class artistry at its finest,” Granata said. “We’re so proud
to showcase this unique alliance of extraordinary artists with the unmatched talents of our international musicians.
‘Convergence’ will be an affair to remember.”
Urinetown
Book and Lyrics by Greg Kotis - Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann - Directed by
Brian McDonald - Musical Direction by Miriam Arichea
Winner of three Tony awards and one of the most uproariously funny musicals in
recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight
in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban
on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging
admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a
revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently
humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be,
Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and
sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.
• Oct 10 @ 7:30 pm Exhibition Great Art on Screen “Vermeer”
The National Gallery, London, is offering a major exhibition on one of the most startling and fascinating
artists of all-time, Johannes Vermeer, most popularly known as the painter of “The Girl with a Pearl
Earring.” Vermeer painted little more than 30 works that still exist, and the National Gallery has chosen
to focus on his art in relation to music. The event goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire story of
Vermeer's life and, in doing so, shows in detail many other of the artist's great works. The program will
suit the wide audience who adore Vermeer's work and who want both to see it in detail and to learn
more about this mysterious, fascinating man.
Enter 2013 Water: Take 1 Online Short Film Contest by September 3
Water-focused short films are being accepted immediately at www.watertake1.com
to be entered into the 2013 Water: Take 1 Online Short Film Contest. Presented for
a second year by Ventura Water and partners, Patagonia and iThentic, the film
contest and outreach campaign highlights our relationship with water through
imagination, education and entertainment. The contest will close on September 3,
2013 with ten finalists named. A jury-awarded Grand Prize of $1,500, sponsored by
Patagonia, will be presented to the Grand Prize Winner at an event hosted by
Brooks Institute of Photography later this fall. The jury will also select an entry filmed
in Ventura, California for the new Ventura Vision Award, sponsored by the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach, as well as a
recipient of the special Best Student Short Film Award. Viewers visiting the website will have an opportunity to “vote” for
their favorite entry online and the film with the most votes will receive the Audience Choice Award, sponsored by EJ
Harrison and Sons. The outreach elements connected to Water: Take 1 will encourage people to rethink how water is used,
especially outdoors. Since 40-60% of urban water is used for landscaping, more education will help customers rethink water
use by promoting irrigation system efficiency, management and new technology. Details about how to submit any recent
short film (less than five minutes long) that addresses the topic of water in any genre may be found at www.watertake1.com.
To learn more, watch videos about Water: Take 1 at www.youtube.com/venturawater.
The Santa Paula Art Museum is the repository and exhibition hall for the Santa Paula Art Collection. The valuable
assemblage represents the accumulation of award winning entries in the Santa Paula Art Show, which began in 1937. The
Collection includes works by such plein air artists as Al Dempster, Ralph Homes, Milford Zornes, Robert Clunie, Jessie
Arms and Cornelis Botke, Paul Lauritz and Douglas Shively. The Museum also hosts rotating exhibits, educational
programs, and music events.
• “Old Hands, New Works” exhibit by Michele Chapin & Susan
Petty through July 14 at the Santa Paula Art Museum
An award-winning stone sculptor, teacher and community arts activist,
Chapin finds inspiration from found organic objects such as shells,
flowers, bones, the figure, and mysticism.
Several of her latest pieces were carved by pushing a piece of stone
past what is structurally possible. With photographer Bill Dewey's
"Waves" series as her muse, Petty uses the chaos and motion of
waves as metaphors for changes in her own life. Each artwork is an
expression of a different emotion. And while Petty's new drawings and
paintings are quite distinct from her previous work, her art remains as
breathtaking as it has always been. Enjoy a time-lapse video by John
