Staff Sgt. Ruben Delvalle saved Pvt. Donald
Tharp, Company F, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry
failed to successfully throw a live hand grenade
around 11:30 a.m., Monday.
“The Soldier did everything correctly until he was
told to throw the grenade,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael
Gilpatric, an instructor with Company B, Victory
Support Battalion. “When he threw it, he threw it
straight to the ground instead of out of the bay.”
Delvalle, following his training, instinctively
picked up Tharp and threw him over the bay wall and
followed suit to the other side before the grenade
exploded. There were no injuries.
“Staff Sergeant Delvalle was relaxed as anyone
Hood Street school temporarily back in business
Hood Street Elementary School will not be
closing after all. Delays in construction at C.C.
Pinckney Elementary School have forced
school officials to house students at the school
which closed in May.
“The construction work on C.C. Pinckney
School has had a number of unexpected delays
and setbacks,” said Dr. Joseph Guiendon,
superintendent of Fort Jackson schools. “We
do not expect the school to be operational for
the scheduled beginning of our school year.”
Hood Street will house third through sixth
grades that are assigned to C.C. Pinckney
while Pierce Terrace Elementary School will
house pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, firstand
second-grade students.
“This could last for a while,” Guiendon
said. “We understand it is a burden on our staff
and our parents. We will provide periodic
updates to them.”
Opening day remains as planned for first
through sixth grades on Aug. 20 and prekindergarten
and kindergarten on Aug. 27.
Faculty and staff members will begin on Aug.
13 to set up classrooms and plan for the
upcoming school year.
“As soon as the construction contractors
and the quality assurance teams release the
Pinckney School for habitation, we will make
decisions for relocating the staff and students
from the former Hood Street Elementary
School to the renovated Pinckney facility,”
Guiendon said.
Renovation work at C.C. Pinckney, which
included new air conditioning and heating,
flooring and roof, has been ongoing since last
year and has suffered several delays.
“It has been a mess,” Guiendon said. “In
spite of this issue we have a mission to continue.
We are going to keep getting better no matter
where we are.”
Hood Street, which was built in 1964,
closed in May due to a decline in the number
of families living on the installation and the
resulting decrease in student enrollment.
Respite available for Soldiers with EFMP children
Mike A. Glasch
Leader Staff
Soldiers with children in the Exceptional Family
Member Program can now get some temporary relief
from the stress of everyday life. EFMP, offered through
Army Community Service, has started offering respite
care for qualifying families.
“The Army has just provided all ACS offices with
respite care EFMP funding,” said Cheryl Jackson, EFMP
manager. “Respite care was one of the big AFAP (Army
Family Action Plan) issues a few years ago.”
Families that meet certain requirements, and are
enrolled in EFMP, are eligible for up to 40 hours of
respite care, per child, every month. Currently the service
is only offered at on-post child care centers, but Jackson
said she is working with agencies off post that can provide
in-home skilled nursing for those children requiring
medical supervision such as a premature baby.
“One concern we found with Soldiers and their families
moving from installation to installation, not having
their extended family readily available, is that it was hard
for parents with special needs children to have a night
out,” Jackson said. “We would hear from the parents, ‘Is
Winters (continued from Page 1)
was a tough competition.”
The four-day event tested three NCOs and three Soldiers in overall
fitness, oral and written communication skills, knowledge of warrior
tasks and battle drills, marksmanship and general military subjects.
Staff Sgt. Blake Simms, an Army Ranger from Fort Benning, Ga.,
and Spc. Hubbard Harvey, an armor crewman from Fort Knox, Ky., were
named NCO and Soldier of the Year, respectively.
The most physically challenging aspect of the competition, Winters
said, was the urban orienteering event which began at 5 a.m. and tested
not only their basic knowledge of Soldier skills but how quick they could
think on their feet when faced with an Improvised Explosive Device or
suicide bomber.
“We marched all over Fort Eustis with a rucksack on,” he said. “That
was probably the toughest part. I did pretty well during the board review
and on the M-4 range.”
Winters said he will begin to train soon to serve as TRADOC’s runner-up
at the 2007 Army NCO and Soldier of the Year “Best Warrior”
competition slated for Sept. 30 through Oct. 8 at Fort Lee, Va., and
Washington, D.C.
“I won’t train as intensely, but I will continue to remain as sharp as I
can possibly be,” he said.
Winters, who has been in the Army for four years, has completed the
Warrior Leader Course, the Combat Lifesaver Course and is trained as a
driver on the HMMWV, the five-ton and the two-and-a-half ton. His first
assignment was with the 94th Engineer Battalion (Heavy) in Germany.
He was deployed to Iraq for 12 months while serving with that battalion.
A native of Gladewater, Texas, he is married and has two children, a
son and a daughter. He plans to attend Officer Candidate School to continue
his Army career.
“After Wednesday’s board, we (the sergeants major) were discussing
who would probably win this thing and we realized that we would come
out ahead if any one of these competitors were selected,” said Command
Sgt. Maj. John Sparks, TRADOC command sergeant major. “I think that
says something about the quality of Soldiers we see here today. They
don’t know how to quit. In fact, I don’t think they would even associate
with someone who is a quitter.
“Imagine all the levels — company, regiment, brigade, command —
they have already climbed to get here. All of them are winners and I congratulate
them for everything they have accomplished,” he said.
The 2006 TRADOC Soldier of the Year was Sgt. April Johnigan, who
represented Fort Jackson and the U.S. Army Accessions Command.
Johnigan is now assigned to the HHD 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th
Sustainment Brigade at Fort Eustis.
Chris.Rasmussen@jackson.army.mil
there any help for us? Is there any relief for us to leave our
child with a special need with someone we can rely on so
we can have a night out — a date?’ Or maybe mom just
needs to take a nap and needs to be away from that child.”
While the respite program deals with children, the
EFMP aids all family members (children and adult) with
special needs.
Under AR 608-75 (Exceptional Family Member
Program), EFMP is a mandated enrollment Army program
that works with military and civilian agencies to
provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational,
housing, community support and personnel services
to families with special needs. An exceptional family
member is a family member, regardless of age, with
any physical, emotional, developmental or intellectual
disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education,
training or counseling.
“It’s designed for Soldiers, to let the Army know that
they have family members with special needs,” said
Jackson. “Once a Soldier enrolls in EFMP on behalf of
his family member, that information becomes a part of
their permanent record at DA and the Soldier’s record is
flagged.
Job well done
That way, when the Soldier comes up for relocation
the Army knows they need to send that family to an area
where there are appropriate medical or educational services
to assist that family member.”
In addition to respite care, EFMP offers a variety of
programs and services; including a support group which
meets the fourth Tuesday of every month.
“It helps the Soldier realize there are others out there
sharing the same ups and downs, ins and outs, questions
and concerns,” said Jackson. “It also allows the children
to network with other children and play without the stigma
of not quite fitting in.”
Jackson encourages Soldiers enrolled in EFMP to contact
her as soon as they receive permanent change of station
orders.
“What I would like to do is personally get them connected
with their next EFMP manager. That way they can
start putting things in action — arranging for schools,
support groups, medical services and housing special
needs.”
Soldiers to learn about mTBI, PTSD
Mike A. Glasch
Leader Staff
By mid-October every Soldier on Fort Jackson will be
able to identify the symptoms, and know how to seek help
for the two most common conditions that result from combat
— mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD).
Two weeks ago the Army launched a “chain-teaching”
program for mTBI and PTSD with the requirement that
every active-duty and reserve-component Soldier receive
the training by Oct. 18. It is an interactive training system
that uses a series of video sequences, PowerPoint slides
and an accompanying script.
It will be taught from the top of the chain of command
downward. Leaders on Fort Jackson have started their
training and will be passing it down to their Soldiers during
the coming weeks.
It is rare for the Army to use the chain-teaching
method. For Maj. Rodney Villanueva, chief, department
of psychiatry, Moncrief Army Community Hospital, it
shows just how serious the Army leadership is about
changing the attitude about mental health.
“The fact that the Army is taking time to say, ‘Okay
everyone, you need to take the time to learn about this and
you need to learn about it in a specific period of time,’
shows the great importance the Army is putting on the
awareness of these conditions,” he said. “It shows sensitivity
and a commitment to increase awareness and make
leadership understand. There may be leaders who have
certain negative views about these conditions. This is
adding legitimacy, telling the line commanders ‘You need
to take care of your Soldiers, these are real conditions.’”
According to Villanueva, 20 percent to 30 percent of
Soldiers returning from combat will have some type of
psychological symptom. They may not be diagnosed with
full PTSD, but they may be having difficulties in many
areas — depression, marital difficulties and anxiety.
“That’s a significant number,” he said. “It is very
important to understand that anyone who is exposed to
any type of combat action is at risk of suffering from post
traumatic stress. The briefing talks about post combat
stress, a compilation of symptoms that result from combat
action. One of the possible outcomes can be PTSD, but
there can be others — anxiety, depression, substance
abuse, marital difficulties and physical difficulties.”
Like post combat stress, mTBI can go undetected since
there may not be any physical evidence of an injury.
“Brain injury can result from a blow to head, or an
indirect blow such as an IED explosion. It can cause you
to have a concussion, a situation where your brain is shaken
within your skull,” explained Villanueva. “Common
symptoms include dizziness, headaches, memory
changes, irritabilities and changes in personality. It needs
to be diagnosed as soon as possible. If a concussion doesn’t
get treated, a second concussion could result in permanent
brain damage.”
In addition to recognizing the symptoms of mTBI and
post combat stress, one of the major intents of the chainteaching
program is to get Soldiers and leaders to understand
that seeking mental-health assistance is not a sign of
weakness, and that a Soldier’s career is endangered not by
treatment, but by allowing a mental-health condition to
worsen without proper care.
“It’s like any medical condition, if you have them you
need to seek help,” said Villanueva. “Your career may be
more in jeopardy if you don’t seek help because it’s likely
the conditions you are suffering from won’t get better
on their own.”
In addition to the initial 90-day window, the commanding
general of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine
Command foresees it being incorporated into initial entry
training so that new Soldiers entering the Army after
October will be exposed to the program.
“My initial thinking is that it should be incorporated
into BCT,” said Gen. William Wallace. “But with the current
POI (program of instruction) we may have to move it
to AIT, but certainly before a Soldier graduates their initial
entry training and reports to their first unit.”
Wallace also said he expects the chain-teaching program
to become an annual training requirement.
That prediction is reinforced with Villanueva’s assessment
that there will be an increase in the number of
Soldiers needing mental health treatment, “With our continued
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan we will be seeing
a greater number of Soldiers returning from combat
who may be having difficulties with post combat stress
and mTBI.”
The chain-teaching program can be downloaded from
the Army Knowledge Online home page. There is also a
separate program for Family Readiness Groups.
What is a focus group? Who attends?
Christina Garza
AFAP Coordinator
A focus group is an open forum for
Soldiers, retirees, veterans, family members,
teens, civilian employees, drill
sergeant spouses and surviving spouses to
voice concerns about life on Fort
Jackson. Any issues or concerns raised
will be written up and briefed to the garrison
commander. Issues are then sent for
review and resolution to the affected
directorate or organization, which will
report back with the issue’s status.
The issue can be active (being
worked), complete (they fixed it) or can
be voted at the quarterly Well Being
Action Council to be forwarded to the
commanding general (issues requiring
higher level approval) or deemed unattainable
(not able to fix it).
Once the issue status has been determined,
we will report it via the Fort
Jackson Web site www.jackson.army.mil,
and updates in the Well Being Corner
weekly article in The Leader newspaper.
This process only works when we have
participation from community members.
The focus groups are a part of the
Community FIRST initiative, which
addresses issues that cannot be solved by
the Interactive Customer Evaluation system.
This quarter there are three focus
groups: retirees, Soldiers and drill
sergeant spouses, and we are seeking participation
for the last two groups.
The first focus group of the quarter —
the Retiree Focus Group — was held July
12. The retiree community responded
well and raised a total of eight issues to
the garrison command.
The Soldier’s Focus Group will be
held Aug. 9, and we are in need of active
duty, Reserve and National Guard
Soldiers of various ranks to attend.
Soldier participation is an integral part of
how well Fort Jackson is working for the
entire community and to improving quality
of life.
On Aug. 23, the first Drill Sergeant
Spouses Focus Group will be held. We
want to hear issues and concerns from
spouses of drill sergeants at Fort Jackson.
We realize being the spouse of a drill
sergeant has its challenges, and we need
to hear about them.
If you would like to attend either of
these focus groups, please call 751-3425.
Both of these focus groups will be held
from 8 a.m. to noon at the Plans, Analysis
and Integration Office, Building 3499.
The Community FIRST/AFAP is an
ongoing process that allows community
members to submit issues that cannot be
fixed by the ICE system. Issues can be
submitted through the Well-Being home
page or Community FIRST/AFAP ICE
link, whether it affects Fort Jackson or the
Army; feedback is important. Help us
Rapid Equipping Force
Army News Service
Fort Belvoir, Va. –– A new surveillance system that
minimizes Soldiers’ exposure to harm while providing
continual observation in operating areas has been fielded
in Iraq after just three weeks of design and manufacturing.
The Army’s Rapid Equipping Force developed the
Rapid Deployment Integrated Surveillance System, or
RDISS, to improve situational awareness for Soldiers at
joint security stations and combat outposts throughout
Iraq.
“There are a lot of areas, especially obscured areas,
around the combat outposts and we needed a way to cut
down on exposing the troops to this broad danger,” said
Sgt. 1st Class Mark Henderson, REF operations NCO.
The REF partnered with Exponent Inc., an engineering
and scientific consulting firm, to develop the RDISS,
which can be installed quickly and with minimal training.
Army and Air Force Exchange Service
DALLAS –– The competitive prices
Exchange Service operations offer military
shoppers don’t end at work.
In fact, all authorized GSA
SmartPay(r) Card holders can quickly and
easily get the items their unit or office
needs without leaving the installation or,
if making a purchase through the
Exchange Online Store, without even
leaving their desks.
Whether shopping in-store, online at
www.aafes.com or through an Exchange
Catalog, GSA cardholders who procure
items through BX/PX operations save
time as there is no need to carry, show and
explain a state tax exemption letter
because almost everything the exchange
carries is already free of taxation.
Purchases made through AAFES activities
also save Department of Defense
money as exchange operations proactively
survey and review product assortments to
ensure prices are routinely lower than the
competition.
“In this environment, where a potential sniper lurks
around every corner, having the capability to maintain
persistent surveillance while minimizing the risk to the
Soldiers is a must,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Shea, REF team
leader in Iraq.
REF staff trained more than 100 Soldiers, Marines and
civilians from 20 brigades in the last two months to
install, troubleshoot and maintain the system.
“It’s a very simple system to install and monitor, yet
the benefits are priceless. I know of a few occasions in
which using RDISS has averted dangerous situations
downrange. It’s already proven its worth,” Shea said.
REF plans to deploy hundreds of systems to Iraq and
Afghanistan by year’s end.
“RDISS is a definitive asset when it comes to persistent
surveillance, and as long as joint security stations
and combat outposts remain targets of opportunity for
enemy forces, RDISS will be there to help the Soldiers,”
Shea said.
“AAFES is a military command with a
dual mission to provide quality goods and
services at competitively low prices and
generate earnings to support MWR programs,”
said AAFES’ Chief of
Communications Lt. Col. Dean
Thurmond. “This structure ensures that all
unit and office related GSA purchases
made through BX/PX operations not only
are a judicious use of funds, but also a
generous contribution that helps support
critical military quality of life efforts.”
VA’s suicide hot line
begins operations
Army News Service
WASHINGTON — To ensure veterans with
emotional crises have round-the-clock access to
trained professionals, the Department of Veterans
Affairs has opened a national suicide prevention hot
line for veterans.
“Veterans need to know these VA professionals
are literally a phone call away,” said Secretary of
Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson. “All service members
who experience the stresses of combat can have
wounds on their minds as well as their bodies.
Veterans should see mental-health services as another
benefit they have earned, which the men and
women of the VA are honored to provide.”
The toll-free hot line number is 1-800-273-TALK
(8255). VA’s hot line will be staffed by mental health
professionals in Canandaigua, N.Y. They will take
toll-free calls from across the country and work
closely with local VA mental-health providers to
help callers.
To operate the national hot line, VA is partnering
with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration of the Department of
Health and Human Services.
“The hot line will put veterans in touch — any
time of the day or night, any day of the week, from
anywhere in the country — with trained, caring professionals
who can help,” added Nicholson. “This is
another example of the VA’s commitment to provide
world-class health care for our nation’s veterans,
especially combat veterans newly returned from Iraq
and Afghanistan.”
The suicide hot line is among several enhancements
to mental-health care that Nicholson has
announced this year. In mid-July, the department’s
top mental-health professionals convened here to
review the services provided to veterans of the War
on Terror.
VA is the largest provider of mental health care in
the nation. This year, the department will spend
about $3 billion for mental-health. More than 9,000
mental-health professionals, backed up by primarycare
physicians and other health professionals in
every VA medical center and outpatient clinic, provide
mental-health care to about 1 million veterans
each year.
Department of Defense civilians who
are not normally entitled to exchange privileges,
but authorized to make organizational
purchases, need only show their
SmartPay(r) Card and a government ID
card to make official purchases.
In 2006, GSA SmartPay(r) purchases
helped generate more than $200 for muchneeded
Morale, Welfare and Recreation
programs.
These funds are used in support of
Youth Services, Armed Forces Recreation
Centers, post functions and other quality
of life initiatives enjoyed by military families
on installations across the globe.
Army News Feature
TV show recounts military
subsistence history
T. Anthony Bell
Army News Service
FORT LEE, Va. –– While researching the evolution
of military subsistence, producers of the Food Network
show, “The Secret Life Of ...,” looked no further than the
U.S. military to find the world’s best-fed fighting force.
That trail led them to the heart of military subsistence,
the Quartermaster Center and School at Fort Lee,
Va., where service members and civilians have spent the
past 47 years working to keep warriors’ minds off their
stomachs and on the mission.
A five-man production crew visited the center last
month to shoot scenes for a 30-minute show featuring
military subsistence, which is expected to air in
November or December.
“Our show will detail back in the day, ancient times,”
said Philip Brody, the show’s director and writer. “We’ll
go back to the Roman army and kind of trace military
meals to today. This (Fort Lee) is really the pinnacle of
providing quality meals in army-sized quantities and
adhering to what wasn’t done back then.”
On air since 2003, “The Secret Life Of ...” highlights
the history of food and why people eat what they eat.
The production crew shot footage of food service specialists
training in mobile, portable kitchens, and interviewed
some of the Army’s culinary professionals, like
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jack C. Van Zanten.
“I think the show will give our civilian counterparts
an idea of what food service Soldiers have to do and
some of the challenges they face in preparing meals in a
field environment,” said Van Zanten, the Army’s food
service advisor.
George Duran, show host and a Europe-trained culinary
artist, said he and other crewmembers held lessthan-ideal
perceptions of Army food service before their
visit. But those perceptions changed.
“Having gone through culinary school in France, this
is quite similar, actually, to what I’ve been through in
terms of my studies,” he said.
Duran was referring
to the curriculum and
The production crew spent about six hours gathering
content to support the show’s storyline. But more importantly,
they gained a greater understanding of Army food
service and the training that goes into feeding Soldiers.
“I always have expectations of what I’m going to see
from the research I’ve done,” said Brody, “and I’ve got
to say that my expectations have been exceeded.”
Mired in mud
Soldiers train at Fort Jackson’s Mire Pit to learn how to “un-stick” vehicles
Chris Rasmussen
Leader Staff
Only a select few of those going through Fort
Jackson’s Wheel Vehicle Mechanic School, 187th
Ordnance Batallion, are given the opportunity to get
down and dirty in the infamous “mire pit.”
Those chosen for the Additional Skills Identifier
H8 Recovery Course are taught all aspects of recovering
a vehicle to include towing and retrieval of a
mired, nosed or overturned track vehicle.
One of their last challenges before graduation is
to recover an M-1084 cargo truck out of the waistlevel
pit filled with water and mud.
“The principles used to recover a truck from the
mud are the same whether it is stuck in sand, snow
or mud,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey Morin, ASI
noncommissioned officer in charge. “Soldiers will
Ordnance Battalion’s field training exercise site for the Vehicle Recovery Course.
Recovery Course attempt to clean up after emerging from the
mire pit Friday at the 187th Ordnance Battalion’s field training
exercise site.
see the same, or similar, to our mire pit set up when
deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.”
The exercise begins with a truck being driven
straight into the mire pit where it is instantly stuck
in the sticky mud. Soldiers then enter the murky
water and walk around the truck, going underwater
to check the condition of each axle.
“We take the temperature of the water in the
mire pit, and if it is below 40 degrees we don’t do it
because of the risk of hypothermia,” Morin said.
Next, Soldiers estimate the situation and calculate
the mechanical advantage needed and obtain
the resistance of the stuck truck. Once the physics
are figured out, an M-1089 tactical vehicle is called
in to tow the truck out. First, however, the Soldiers
must rig up cables and pulleys to the mired vehicle
and attach them to the tow truck.
If the Soldier’s calculations and cable riggings
are done correctly the vehicle emerges from the
mire pit muddied but still in working condition.
Selection for the ASI H8 Recovery Course is
based on the total Soldier concept, Morin said,
including academic average, Soldierization, physical
fitness, discipline and motivation.
The course trains approximately 500 Soldiers a
year. They are given 85 hours of course instruction
with 12 instructors who have an average of 12 years
of mechanical experience in the Army or civilian
sector. Soldiers are taught vehicle recovery fundamentals,
operating communication equipment and
operation of the hydraulic system of the M-88A1
and M-88A2 to operate all aspects of the recovery
vehicle.
Immunizations are for children and adults
Col. James
QI thought immunizations were
for children. Why do I need to
be immunized?
AImmunizations are the best
way to protect yourself from
vaccine-preventable diseases such as
influenza, pneumococcal disease
(pneumonia) and hepatitis B.
Pneumococcal pneumonia and
QHow often do I need to be immunized?
A Immunizations
for pneumococcal disease,
measles, mumps and rubella usually are administered
once, and may protect you for life.
Those born before 1956 may require a second measles
vaccination. The Influenza vaccine must be administered
yearly due to the appearance of new strains of virus which
are not addressed by previous vaccines.
Restoring
the spirit
after war
Chaplain (Maj.) Stephen W. Austin
U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School
Veterans Affairs psychiatrist Dr. Larry
Dewey, in his book, War and Redemption
(Ashgate, 2004), discusses the bond
between Soldiers in combat –– a bond so
strong that the memory of a buddy lost
can be one of the most difficult experiences
a veteran brings home from war.
He relates the experience of one
Vietnam veteran whom he calls “Larry.”
A Special Forces officer, Larry spent two
and a half years in Southeast Asia, leading
his men in operations where their
lives were often at risk.
Larry was a deeply religious person
who relied on his faith for the wisdom
and courage to lead his troops. Even with
his faith, he found coming home difficult.
One experience in particular continued
to trouble him — toward the end of his
final tour in Vietnam, he and his men
responded to a company that had just
been ambushed.
They filled their “Huey” with casualties
and headed for the nearest field hospital.
On the way, he held a young dying
Soldier in the final minutes of his life -
assuming the guilt for failing to save the
life of this fellow warrior.
With the imprint of this memory and
others, Larry left Vietnam with a great
deal of anger and bitterness.
For some time after his return, he
watched himself cycle downward in selfdestructive
behaviors. Finally –– and fortunately
–– the prospect of losing his wife
and children jolted him enough to give
new insight into himself. He said:
“What I found . . . was that holding on
to that bitterness and hate keeps the
wounds open. You have to give up even
justified bitterness and hate to fully heal
the emotional and spiritual wounds of
war. God can help you do this, but you
have to help yourself too.” (p. 218)
He sought help from the medical community,
and he deliberately committed his
war burden to God –– setting his life on a
different trajectory.
We know that the burden of war continues
past redeployment –– indeed, the
warrior’s greatest challenge may be coming
home. Blessedly, God’s redemptive
power can restore wholeness even to the
brokenness of war. Recall the prayer of
Psalm 80:
Restore us, O God;
make your face shine upon us,
that we may be saved.
Avoiding diploma mills on the Internet
Felix Scott Mason
Legal Intern
Getting a college or graduate degree online can be a
convenient way to learn and grow intellectually while
also having time to work. However, it can also be a path
to disaster. While there are many
legitimate online degree programs,
there are those whose
sole purpose is to make a profit.
These programs are called
“diploma mills.” A diploma mill is
described by Merriam-Webster’s
Online Dictionary as “a usually
unregulated institution of higher
education granting degrees with
few or no academic requirements.”
Diploma mills might look good up front but their
degrees are not legitimate and are even illegal in some
states. Using a bogus degree to get a job or promotion is
illegal in Oregon, New Jersey, Indiana, North Dakota
and Nevada and diploma mills are banned in Tennessee.
Even in states where they are not illegal, getting
caught with a fake degree is bad for your career. Any
employer who does their homework will discover that
the degree is a fake. A bogus degree will not impress
employers and is a waste of your money. The goal is to
avoid getting a degree from a diploma mill.
The following are signs that a program is an unac-
credited diploma mill and not a legitimate school:
1. The degree can be earned in less time than a degree
from an accredited postsecondary institution.
2. Some diploma mills will list accreditation by organizations
that are not recognized by the U.S. Department
of Education or the Council for Higher Education
Accreditation.
3. The school places unrealistic emphasis on offering
college credits for “lifetime” or “real world” experiences.
4. Tuition is paid on a per-degree basis. Accredited
institutions charge by credit hours, course or semester.
5. There is little or no interaction with professors.
6. The name of the school is similar to a reputable
university.
7. The school’s address is a box number or suite.
Remember, the easiest sign is little or no required
academic work to earn a degree. Diploma mills that do
require any real work will require a level of academic
work that is below that of an accredited school. As with
most things in life, “if it sounds too good to be true, it
probably is.” There are many reputable online institutions,
and it is important to remember that you can get a
good education online.
There are many ways to find out if a school you are
considering is legitimate. The U.S. Department of
Education has published a list of schools that are accredited
by accrediting agencies recognized by the Secretary
Legal Assistance Office
Fort Jackson’s Legal Assistance Office is located
in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 9475
Kershaw Rd., and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
Mondays through Thursdays. Appointments can be
made by calling 751-4287.
The office accepts walk-ins for living wills, health
care powers of attorney and durable powers of attorney,
1:30-3:30 p.m, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Walk-ins are welcome for general legal questions
and are accepted 1:30-4 p.m., Wednesdays.
of Education.
This list can be found at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation.
Contacting The Better Business Bureau of
Columbia online at www.columbia.bbb.org or by phone
at 254-2525 or contacting the state attorney general’s
office at www.naag.org, is a good way to see if a school
is operating legally in a state or if it has had any complaints
filed against it.
The U.S. Department of Education is a good resource
on the issue of diploma mills and accreditation and can
be found at www.ed.gov/students/prep/college/diplomamills/index.html.
By keeping informed, you can protect
yourself from a bogus degree and earn a degree that
counts.

performance. The EAP is an integral part of the Army
Substance Abuse Program. EAP offers assessments,
short-term counseling and referral services. Sometimes
people experience personal challenges in which the
intensity of their emotions may be more than they can
handle. Seeking services from the EAP is a healthy sign.
QWho is authorized to receive EAP services?
will be duty uniform.
Editor’s Note: The Army Substance Abuse
Program provides prevention/education to the community
on topics pertaining to alcohol and other drug
usage. ASAP maintains a wide selection of pamphlets
and videos that can be used to get a further
understanding of the dynamics of substance abuse
and use. ASAP staff is available to give presentations
on alcohol and drug abuse.
For questions about classes offered or about substance
abuse, call 751-5007.
EAP until the problem is resolved.
QWhat is a supervisory referral?
ASometimes supervisors recommend employees
speak with the EAPC because they’re having
problems at their workplace. At the first meeting, information
will be gathered to gain an understanding of the
problems leading to the supervisory referral. Employees
will be asked to sign a release of information that allows
the EAPC to speak with the supervisor to ensure you
have followed through with the referral. No further
information will be shared by the EAPC about the
employee unless consent by the employee is given.
Water aerobics at Knight Pool ... dive in!
Pamela Greene
Recreation Specialist
Water Aerobics is a great way to bring spice and
variety back to a sluggish workout routine.
Think about exercising every muscle and every joint
in your body — all at the same time. That is what
happens with water aerobics. Not only do you
get a fabulous workout, but you avoid impact
and stress on joints as well. Injury rates go
down and participants are able to focus more on
the workout and less on pain.
There are multiple benefits of water aerobics: it does
not cause any kind of stress or jerk on the joints and is
extremely safe. Usually workouts last about an hour.
You can expect all exercise components to be addressed
Post first sergeant trains athletes, Soldiers
Heath Hamacher
Leader Staff
A Fort Jackson first sergeant is well known in athletic
circles as the go-to person to help train athletes, and his
newest undertaking is getting his long-time friend C.J.
Wallace, who signed with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks
on May 2, back in shape.
When Wallace, a former University of Washington
football standout, stepped off the plane at the Charlotte-
Douglas International Airport, 1st Sgt. Dean Durham,
company first sergeant, Company A, 1st Battalion, 13th
Infantry Regiment, said, “You’re fat.”
“I knew then that I was in for a treat,” said the softspoken
Wallace, smiling.
Durham has known Wallace since the now 22-yearold
defensive back played youth football in Sacramento,
Calif. They attended the same church and often worked
out together. However, Wallace’s trip to Fort Jackson
was not a social visit. He was here to train.
“He is like a son to me, but he’s not here to hang out,
and he’s not here to club,” Durham said. “This is solely a
mission to take care of business. His team is counting on
him to do big things.”
Durham, a 24-year Army veteran and long-time
strength and conditioning coach, has trained numerous
professional athletes throughout the years. He majored in
physical education at California State University —
Sacramento, and his client list has included former
Sacramento Monarch Danielle Viglione and current
Houston Texan, Ephraim Salaam. Former major-league
slugger Greg Vaughn once called Durham for advice on
improving bat speed.
The fact that he agreed to train Wallace speaks volumes
about the rookie’s character.
“If I endorse an athlete, not only is he ready to go
physically, but he’s ready to go mentally, as well,”
Durham said. “I’m not going to deliver you a dysfunctional
piece of garbage.”
Wallace decided to fly all the way from Sacramento
because the Seahawks requested that he report to training
camp — which began Sunday — at 218 pounds. At
224, Wallace wasn’t far from his target weight but was
heavier than he had ever been. He knew just the trick for
dropping the extra pounds.
“The first sergeant always puts me through hard,
demanding workouts,” Wallace said. “They don’t get
much tougher than his. I came here because I know what
I’m going to get. He’s been real successful in my career,
and you can’t shy away from what’s working.”
Durham’s first move was to change Wallace’s eating
habits. The diet that included “pretty much whatever” he
felt like eating now consisted of foods that are more
healthy such as oatmeal, fruit, chicken breasts and salad.
Durham planned 12 days of brutal physical training
that consisted of running, weight lifting and plenty of
position-specific exercises. Much of the cardiovascular
training took place at Coleman’s Gym (affectionately
called “the sweatbox” by the pair) and Patton Field,
while Perez Fitness Center was the preferred location for
weight training.
The two-a-day routines also included plenty of core
exercises geared toward improving Wallace’s explosiveness,
and plenty of homework for Durham.
“I keep journals and take meticulous notes on athletes,”
Durham said. “I’ve spent hours recording them
and watching their motions, because one thing I did in
Sacramento (Durham once owned a state-of-the-art gym
there) was guarantee an improvement in athleticism.”
C.J.Wallace, under the watchful eye of 1st Sgt. Dean Durham, goes through a strenuous leg workout at the Perez
Fitness Center July 23.
Former University of Louisville linebacker, Jeremy
Freitag, has trained with Durham. Freitag made the transition
from football player to professional fighter and
credits Durham with helping him.
“He helped me a lot with understanding how to use
my strength,” Freitag said. “I had strength from playing
football, but he showed me how to use strength and
speed together.”
In addition to Durham’s knowledge, his occupation
plays a role in effective training, according to Wallace.
“He brings that Army mentality and he’s not going to
show you any sympathy,” he said. “If there’s something
seriously wrong, that’s different. But if he thinks you’re
cup caking during a workout, you’ll get no sympathy.”
Accustomed to the Mediterranean-like climate of his
Northern California home and the mild climate of the
Pacific Northwest, Wallace found Fort Jackson’s humid,
subtropical environment unfamiliar but valuable.
“I think it’s been positive for my weight loss because
I’m constantly sweating, you know, getting toxins out,”
he said. “It was hot out in Sacramento, but here you’ve
got the heat and humidity.”
Durham said Wallace is a good person and an exceptional
athlete, and that he saw something special in him a
long time ago.
“I told his dad when he was a 9-year-old that he was
going into the NFL,” Durham said. “I knew if he stayed
on track, worked hard and became a coachable player,
he’d make it.”
Wallace said he was thrilled — but not surprised — at
the news he’d be playing the game he loves at its highest
level. “The game don’t change, it just gets faster,” he
said. “So, I plan on getting faster.”
Thanks to his time at Fort Jackson and Durham’s
wickedly effective training routines, Wallace has already
gotten faster. After less than two weeks here, he reported
to training camp in Kirkland, Wash., July 26 well under
the requested weight.
He said he feels like a new man and can’t wait to
show it off at training camp.
“I just want to be the best, and to do that you’ve got
to work the hardest and be around people who are going
to demand the best out of you,” Wallace said. “Working
with the first sergeant, the facilities here — everything’s
been great. This is the perfect place to train and I wouldn’t
mind coming back.”
Durham feels good about the person and athlete he’s
delivering to the Seattle Seahawks — and said he plans
to continue training athletes in his spare time — but said
he never loses sight of his number one mission.
“My first priority is getting these young warriors
ready to go out there and defend the Constitution of the
United States,” he said.
Durham talked about the possibility of returning to
Sacramento one day, or maybe opening up a gym in
South Carolina to help “bring up” children. High on his
list of priorities is giving something back to “God, to
parents and to the community.”
His phone rings regularly, with agents, athletes and
coaches offering jobs and asking when he plans on coming
back. For now though — at least for a couple more
years — Durham is happy where he is.
“I’m losing money by being here, but it’s for a much
greater cause,” he said. “Athletes will run up and down
the field, hit balls over fences or shoot baskets and make
millions of dollars, but not Soldiers. I want to do my part
to ensure they make it back to their loved ones.”
Making people better than they were when he got
them. That’s what it’s all about.
