Post landfill cleaned up; more work planned
Chris Rasmussen
Leader Staff
A Fort Jackson landfill, deemed by the federal government
to be an environmental hazard, has been cleaned up and the
land restored to its natural state.
The Range 17 Landfill, located near the intersection of
Hartsville Guard and Old Hartsville Guard roads, was closed
in 1989 and used up until that point to dispose of debris from
road construction and barracks demolition.
“We have gone through several phases of investigation for
environmental impact and didn’t find much. Nothing hazardous
has been found. Mostly solid waste,” said Lahiri
Estaba, Fort Jackson Environmental Restoration Program
manager.
The Environmental Protection Agency, however, mandated
Fort Jackson clean up the site as well as clean five other former
landfills.
Debris, which consisted mostly of concrete and metal, was
trucked onto the 15-acre site and dumped on the surface and
into pits.
Removing the debris was no easy task, said Lahiri. To
remove the concrete and metal, several trees had to be cut
“As an environmentalist it is an oxymoron to cut down
trees, but we had to cut them down to take out the waste,” he
said. The trees were turned into mulch.
The concrete removed from the site has been recycled and
was ground up for restoration work at similar sites. Because
the concrete was in a landfill and deemed unusable by the
EPA, the post is unable to use the concrete for other projects
such as road construction.
“Here at Fort Jackson we really strive to restore, conserve
and recycle,” Lahiri said.
Once the debris was removed from the site, workers placed
a two-foot layer of soil cover on the site.
In addition to cleanup, the post is required by the EPA to
monitor the groundwater underneath the former landfill for
possible contamination. A well will be dug on the site this
month and water sampling will be conducted to ensure there
is no contamination.
Lahiri said the post is currently working to clean up the
additional five landfills located across Fort Jackson that total
500 acres.
Utilities
privatizing
Heath Hamacher
Leader Staff
Fort Jackson residents and employees might soon see
various local utility companies providing services such as
water, sewer and electricity.
Because owning and operating utility systems is not a
core function of the Department of Defense, the Utilities
Privatization program looks to turn over Department of
Defense systems to industry experts.
The intent, according to the Defense Energy Support
Center’s 2003 Request for Proposal, is to “obtain safe, reliable
and efficient utility services for Army installations.”
The DoD directed that all service-owned electric, natural
gas, water and wastewater utility systems to be privatized
unless security concerns required federal ownership or if
privatization is not economical. Where not economical,
systems will be recapitalized using traditional funding
sources such as the operations and maintenance and military
construction appropriations.
Fort Jackson has been evaluated and is privatizing two
systems, said Mike Munn, maintenance program manager,
Directorate of Logistics and Engineering.
“We’re in the process of awarding water and wastewater
contracts,” Munn said. “We anticipate a January ‘07 award,
and there’s a 120-day transition period from the notice of
Contributing Writer
My friend, my colleague, one of the
last “old school” journalists died last
week. I first met Harvey Moss, whose
official title was “managing editor, Fort
Jackson Leader,” when I was a private
first class assigned to the Public Affairs
Office in 1995.
Harvey’s official title really didn’t
cover the scope of this job. Most people
saw him as the “advertising guy for the
Leader.” Sure, he was the head of the
advertising sales department, but he was
also the man who watched over the paper
after all the stories and photos were laid
out. He stayed with the paper as it went
from dummy sheets to plates, to film to
newsprint sheets and finally, the finished
product.
By some twist of fate, I became the
Leader editor after less than one year on
staff. For a month, I would wake up in a
state of panic –– “Oh, God did I make
that change on page 3?”
It was during this trial by fire that
Harvey became more than the man “who
put the ads in the paper.” He became my
friend, my colleague, my mentor.
He taught me how space to leave
QWhat AThe is meant by chain of custody of a urinalysis?
chain of custody is the physical possession
of specimen that is kept under direct observation
by an observer or qualified noncommissioned officer
between the photo and the cutline, the
headline and the body of the story. He
refined my copy fitting skills –– tedious
math that was a part of newspapers in the
“dark ages.” I finally understood what
“six down” meant –– the amount of space
filled by an article measured from the top
of the page to the bottom of the last line
of type. He helped me lay out my very
first double truck, the two facing pages in
the center of a newspaper.
We discussed ideas for special editions,
front pages, layout changes ... his
enthusiasm for newspapers was contagious.
We did special inserts for the holidays,
for special events and for post history.
We had the time of our lives and put
out some real good papers.
After more than four years as the editor,
it was my time to move on ... albeit, I
did not go far. I moved a few blocks away
to Morale, Welfare and Recreation and
happily for me, I still got to work with
Harvey –– this time with ads.
Harvey was always smiling, always
willing to do whatever he could to make
everyone happy.
Harvey was physically the most opposite
anyone could be to me — male, tall
(nearly 7 feet) rail thin, conservative and
Commentary
Remembering Harvey –– the last of the great newspaper men
close as we were, I knew so little about
him. He was very private and I never
wanted to pry. I knew his father was not
doing well, and living in Raleigh. I knew
he had brothers and sisters up north. He
had a nephew and niece-in-law who visited
often. They had a labradoodle that was
Harvey’s “grandnephew” and he always
looked forward to the grandnephew’s visits,
which he prepared for with dog
biscuits and squeaky toys. I know he
never married.
I suppose I don’t know the little everyday
things about Harvey, but I know the
important ones. I know he was my true
friend. I know he loved me. I know I love
him and I miss him so much already.
Editor’s note: For 25 years, Harvey
Moss was the liaison between the Fort
Jackson Leader and its contract publisher.
His primary mission was to ensure the
newspaper was published on time, delivered
to the right places and the advertisers
were happy. He was often seen in and
around the community, but to those who
did not know his name, he was “the
Leader guy.” For the Public Affairs Office
and many others around Fort Jackson,
Harvey was part of the family and we will
miss him very much.
The war in Iraq is different from other
campaigns. There are different challenges,
tactics and landscapes that require different
types of equipment.
In the Army’s largest equipment fielding
effort since World War II, the Rapid
Fielding Initiative is dedicated to protecting
Soldiers and enhancing their quality of
life in the field by providing the most upto-date
technological equipment available.
So far, more than 600,000 active and
reserve troops have been equipped, including
Basic Combat Training Soldiers at Fort
Jackson.
The RFI was created in 2003, based on
lessons learned during the deployment of
combat troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
The first RFI kits contained only 14
items. Current RFI kits contain 58 items,
with plans to add additional items in the
future.
Some of the items already included are
improved spotting scopes, ballistics spectacles,
the advanced combat helmet and
Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying
Equipment, which consists of removable
compartments and components. There is
also improved personal equipment such as
socks, boots and moisture-wicking Tshirts.
The RFI operates out of the Program
Executive Office Soldier program at Fort
Belvoir, Va. Since March, RFI kits have
been issued to BCT Soldiers at Fort
Army News Service
SAN ANTONIO, Jan. 7 –– A new traveling exhibit
designed to help connect the American public to the
American Soldier was unveiled amid the pageantry of the
Army’s Fan Fiesta exhibition, culminating with the
Army-sponsored “All-American” Bowl high school allstar
football contest played last Saturday at the
Alamodome.
The U.S. Army Accessions Command, in conjunction
with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office (PEO)
Soldier, took the wraps of their newest interactive recruiting
tool, the American Soldier Adventure Van.
The van highlights the Army’s most technologically
advanced equipment and celebrates the Soldier as the
heart of the Army.
“The van shows the American public how the
American Soldier is outfitted with the best equipment
possible to carry out its missions in the 21st Century,” said
Sgt. Maj. Thomas Coleman with PEO Soldier in Boston,
Mass.
The van will travel throughout the country about 270
days a year, providing interactive demonstrations, video
displays and examples of weapons, clothing and gear of
the future being planned for the Soldier of today.
The van was developed to, not only help generate leads
for recruiting, but to also give the American public an
awareness of the clothing, weapons and equipment being
quickly fielded to help protect Soldiers’ lives in areas of
potential danger.
Visitors taking a sneak peak of the van during the “All-
American” Fan Fiesta exhibitions outside the Alamodome
were able to train like a Soldier with the interactive
Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS),
as well as test their shooting prowess in a marksmanship
training simulator using a replica of the M-4 Carbine and
M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.
familiarize Soldiers with the gear they’ll
be using.
Other items issued here are:
º Desert knee/elbow pads
º Land Operations Goggles
º Hydration System (Navy personnel
only)
º Infrared markers (Navy personnel
only)
“This allows us to train Soldiers as they
have to fight,” said Henry Geathers, logistics
chief, Directorate of Logistics and
Engineering. “By having the RFI here,
they’re used to items such as the combat
helmet and Improved First-Aid Kit when
they get to Iraq –– this won’t be their first
time seeing these.”
New insurance helps with long-term care
Heath Hamacher
Leader Staff
With nursing home and home-care costs expected to rise in the
coming years, it makes sense for Soldiers and other government
employees to plan ahead for long-term care, and to integrate that
planning into their total financial or retirement plan.
Tom Bebbington, public relations manager for the relativelynew
Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program, said most
health insurance programs provide little or no coverage for longterm
care services.
“Planning ahead for these high costs is absolutely critical to
preserving your nest egg, your estate plan and your personal independence,”
Bebbington said.
He said the FLTCIP underscores the importance of early longterm
care planning and gives members the opportunity to apply
for substantial long-term care coverage at favorable group premiums.
Established by an act of Congress in 2000 and overseen by the
U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the FLTCIP is designed to
meet the specific needs of the federal family. It also provides care
coordination services to qualified relatives of enrollees at no cost,
Bebbington said.
“When you need long-term care services, securing the best
type and quality of care can seem daunting,” said Mary Lou
McGuinness, a registered nurse and director of care coordination
and claims for the FLTCIP. “That’s why the care coordination services
provided by the only federally-sponsored long-term care
insurance program are truly one of the hallmarks of the program.”
Bebbington said the best time to consider buying long-term
Munn said the electric system has
been deferred until fiscal year 2008,
and it has been determined that privatizing
gas at this time would be
uneconomical, but that it would be
reviewed again.
He expects better quality from
both water and sewer systems once
they are contracted.
“Privatization is expected to
bring our system up to standards to
meet regulatory requirements,”
Munn said. “It will improve our
quality of water and should mini-
mize disruptions in services. We
have been under- funded for years
and have deferred maintenance.”
Of the Army’s 351 Continental
U.S. systems, 118 have been privatized,
158 have been deemed uneconomical
to privatize and 75 are
under evaluation. Evaluations are
expected to be completed by
September 2011.
The Privatization program does
not include overseas utility systems,
which are generally owned by the
host nation.
“The younger you are when you purchase coverage, the less
Bebbington. “Waiting not only means a larger cash outlay, it
means you’ll be a greater risk of having pre-existing health problems
that may prevent you from qualifying.”
Coverage under the FLTCIP is backed by the John Hancock
consistently earned high ratings for financial strength and
offers the kind of benefits and features that are most valuable ––
now and in the future –– to members of the federal family.
Bebbington said the FLTCIP offers enrollees some distinct
advantages, including comprehensive coverage, competitive and
stable rates, international coverage, and administrative service
standards that are the highest in the long-term care insurance
industry.
“The program’s policies are simple to understand and offer
benefits tailored to federal family members,” Beddington said.
“Policies are sold direct through highly trained, non-commissioned
staff that understands how long-term care insurance works
and how to recommend the right coverage. There are no high
pressure sales tactics, simply sound advice.”
Fort Jackson’s Customer Management Services Action
Council convened Jan. 4. The name of the council was
changed based on the evolution of the three-tiered feedback
process which encompasses individuals, constituent
groups (Soldiers, retirees, veterans, family members and
civilian employees), and mission commanders supported
by the U.S. Army Garrison.
The council convenes on a quarterly basis to discuss
Interactive Customer Evaluation system, Community
FIRST, and corporate assessment feedback submitted by
the community. During this meeting the council discussed
and resolved issues, concerns and recommendations submitted
by the Fort Jackson community during the 2007
fiscal year first quarter.
The Customer Management Services office is responsible
for administering the three feedback mechanisms
designed to gather, analyze and report information that is
essential to improve services provided by the garrison.
The first tier is ICE, which is used for individual feedback
on the 250 service providers on Fort Jackson. The
installation finished with a 93 percent satisfaction level
and more than 4,000 responses during the 2007 fiscal year
first quarter.
The second tier is the Community FIRST Quarterly
Issue Resolution Process used for constituent group feedback
to submit issues that cannot be fixed by ICE. There
were a total of 62 issues submitted during the 2007 fiscal
Congratulations! We have come to
the end of Block Leave, and all members
of the Fort Jackson community
returned safely. This is an excellent
achievement and was only possible
because every one of you did your
part.
Unfortunately, the threat remains
very real. During the 2006 fiscal year,
16 Soldiers died in privately owned
vehicle accidents in the Training and
Doctrine Command. In the 2007 fiscal
year first quarter, TRADOC has lost
eight Soldiers in POV accidents.
Excessive speed and alcohol were
contributing factors in many of the
POV accidents involving TRADOC
Soldiers. Army-wide accident statistics
paint a similar picture.
Safety Tip of the Week
DUIs are on the rise –– six of them
in December. Always remember that
Spotlight
year first quarter (18 submitted from people through their
CMSAC representatives; six submitted through the
Surviving Spouses Focus Group; 21 submitted through
the Civilian Employee Focus Group; and 17 submitted
through the Family Member Focus Group).
The CMSAC reviews all active and completed issues
for the current quarter. Active issues are discussed and
resolved during the council if they are within the control
of the installation. Others may require forwarding to higher
levels. Votes are taken to determine if an issue should
be recommended for forwarding to the commanding general.
The CG makes the final determination on forwarding
issues beyond Fort Jackson.
There were several issues voted to be presented to the
CG for forwarding beyond Fort Jackson. These issues and
all other issues submitted to Community FIRST can be
found on the Fort Jackson Well-Being Web site and will
be discussed in further articles of the “Customer Service
Corner” (formerly known as the Well-Being Corner).
The third tier of feedback is the semi-annual corporate
assessment. This assessment is designed to gather feedback
from mission commander and unit leadership on performance,
importance and priority of services provided.
The ratings are then provided to garrison directorates for
evaluation and development of action plans to improve
services, if required. The CMS Office will be conducting
briefings with the mission commanders and unit leadership
during January and February. The briefings will consist
of 2006 fiscal year assessment results and the details
other options are available.
º All Fort Jackson military organizations
are required to produce a calling
card with numbers that Soldiers
can call in case they have had too
much to drink, or for other emergencies.
If you do not have one, contact
your chain of command.
º If you are using the Fort Jackson
club system, all you need to do is tell
the bar staff that you have had too
much to drink and you will be given a
free cab ride home –– no questions
asked.
º Designated drivers are another
option, and most clubs have some sort
of program. The Fort Jackson clubs
will provide the designated driver with
free non-alcoholic drinks.
Drinking and Driving is simply
unacceptable, so do the right thing.
ICE Appreciation
The garrison would like to congratulate the Fort
Jackson Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, and the
Installation Safety Office. They have maintained a 4.88
and a 4.87 percent rating, respectively, in employee/staff
is an outstanding performance in customer satisfaction.
Keep up the good work.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9, 2007 –– A 22-year-old college
student recently traded her beauty-queen tiara for
the Kevlar helmet she’ll wear when she deploys with her
Minnesota Army National Guard unit to Iraq.
For the past six months, Jessica Gaulke’s life has
been about college classes and making appearances as
Minneapolis’ 2007 Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes, but
soon it will focus on helping lead Iraq to a peaceful
democracy.
The Augsburg College senior studying sociology will
be deploying as Spc. Jessica Gaulke with the 2nd
Battalion, 147th Assault Helicopter Battalion. The unit is
scheduled to start training at Fort Hood, Texas, this
spring in advance of a yearlong tour in Iraq.
“I’m feeling strong to go. The training I’ve received
is good training, and I’m prepared,” Gaulke said. But her
military obligation, which she accepted in February 2002
when she joined the National Guard, has ended her rein
as Queen of the Lakes.
Although it was never her lifelong ambition to win a
beauty pageant, she said the abbreviated experience has
been wonderful. So, although she admits it was bittersweet
to hand over her crown
Jan. 4, she said she feels no
resentment.
“I’ve heard this whole time
that, ‘You could go. You never
know when you’re going to go,
but you could go at any time and
they don’t even have to give you
notice,’” Gaulke said. “I’m
thankful for the six months that
I’ve had (as Queen of the Lakes).
Of course, I would have liked to finish the year out, but
what I’ve experienced has been amazing.”
WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 –– The new
governance plan for the military health
care system, which is in its very early
stages, will improve the care given to
troops and their families in today’s joint
environment, the Defense Department’s
top health official said today.
The idea behind the new governance
plan is to have the separate military services
work together even more closely
than they do now in the area of health care.
This will improve the efficiency and effectiveness
of the system, Dr. William
Winkenwerder Jr., assistant secretary of
defense for health affairs, said in an interview
at the Pentagon.
“Our system does work well now; we
have great outcomes in battlefield medicine
and in the care of our wounded –– the
best in history,” Winkenwerder said. “But
“The training I’ve
received is good training,
and I’m prepared.”
During the six months as Aquatennial Queen of the
Lakes, she juggled her National Guard drill duties and
schoolwork with her public appearances, she said.
“I do it pretty well, actually. I’ve had to do a couple
of changes in my car going from drill to parades,”
Gaulke said. “I think maybe this is changing the whole
outlook on the pageant system and scholarship programs
because it’s not all about the glitz and glam.
“It’s really about the person you are,” she said.
“Sometimes I don’t look the best, but people understand.”
Although she’s been dubbed the “Brave Beauty,”
Gaulke said she won her crown based on who she is.
“There’s no swimsuit, there’s no gown or fishbowl questions,
things like that we normally see in Miss America,”
she said. “It’s based on your school, your volunteer
experience, what you’re active in currently.”
Gaulke carries a 3.3 grade point average and volunteers
as a coach for her high school lacrosse team in the
spring. She also works with the Minneapolis-based Open
Arms, an organization that makes and delivers meals for
residents with HIV/AIDS.
For the down-to-earth beauty queen, trading her
crown for cammies is no big deal. “Switching one for
the other ... I signed up for it and I
knew it was a possibility,” Gaulke said.
There’s another major life event on
the near horizon that makes giving up
her crown to head to Iraq seem easy in
comparison. “I’m getting married next
week,” she said, adding that her newlywed
husband, whom she’ll be leaving
behind soon, will take care of their two
dogs and the new home the couple just
purchased.
“I’m excited and I think life is bringing me in the
right direction,” she said. “Things happen for a reason.”
Spc. Jessica Gaulke
Army National Guard
we have a vision, we have a clear set of
ideas that things can work even better.”
The new governance plan was approved
by Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon
England on Nov. 27, 2006. It calls for joint
oversight and leadership of several key
functional areas across the health system,
such as education and training, medical
research, and health care delivery.
Under the new plan, large local markets
that serve more than one branch of the military
will have a unified authority,
Winkenwerder explained. This will allow
for better decision making, increased cost
effectiveness and shared resources, he
said.
The Defense Department will consolidate
medical education and training at a
new center in San Antonio, and it will also
consolidate medical research. Any
research that is unique to a specific service
will be preserved, Winkenwerder added.
“One of the things that we wanted to do
was to not break anything that works well
today; we don’t think we’re going to do
that at all,” he said.
DoD health care has already consolidated
in one area –– information technology.
Winkenwerder praised the new electronic
medical records system, AHLTA, the
“Armed Forces Health Longitudinal
Technology Application,” which is used
by all services at all military treatment
facilities.
“We have the chance to do that kind of
thing in other areas, and that’s what the
new governance plan is about,” he said.
The new governance plan will not create
a new joint command with one surgeon
general, Winkenwerder explained. The
services will maintain their separate surgeons
general, he said, but major changes
in governance will happen across the
board.
New governance will improve military health care system, official says
The new governance system will
require a transition process,
Winkenwerder said. Details of the plan
still need to be worked out, and a transition
team will be appointed to map the execution
of the plan, which is expected to be
complete by 2009.
Key goals of the new plan are to save
taxpayer dollars and improve the health
care given to troops and their families,
Winkenwerder said.
He praised the services for their cooperation
and compromise in developing the
plan, and expressed optimism about the
success of the plan.
“Ultimately, all of this needs to be
about producing a better product, producing
a better result, all in the interest of our
service members and their families,” he
said. “They deserve the best that we can
provide them, and that’s the goal of all
this.”

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 8 –– U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers archaeologist Dr.
Michael “Sonny” Trimble has been to
Iraq five times in the last two years, for a
total of 17 months.
He hasn’t gone there to shed light on
the ancient history of what many people
call the cradle of civilization. Rather,
he’s gone there to lead an effort to gather
and document accurate evidence and
decisively tell the story of hundreds of
thousands of Iraqis allegedly murdered
by Saddam Hussein and his regime over
the last two decades.
“I want to give his victims their voices,”
Trimble said. “I want them to be
able to tell the world what happened to
them.”
Trimble has led a team of archaeologists,
forensic anthropologists, photographers,collections
managers,
archivists, and a
broad range of
other specialists
to sort, catalog
and preserve
exhumed items
for future applications.
The team also
included a legal
specialist to
ensure the
results would be “air tight” legal records
of events and findings.
Their work, for the Justice
Department’s Regime Crimes Liaison
Office in Baghdad has turned up a lot of
details. Searching in mass graves, the
team found and meticulously documented
more than just skeletons.
Due to the soil’s nature in much of
Iraq, victims’ clothing with its original
colors, toys and even official identity
documents have been preserved and
recovered.
“We’ve gained a great respect for
these people –– not simply as remains,
which we of course, handled with great
care –– but as the people they were when
they lived,” Trimble said.
Trimble journeyed to Iraq one more
time recently. This time, on Nov. 30 he
sat in a witness chair for four hours at
the trial of Saddam Hussein, who was
being tried with several other Baath Party
officials in the Anfal trial.
During Trimble’s testimony, the
deposed dictator, other defendants and
defense attorneys scrutinized him
intensely.
Trimble firmly delivered a detailed
report of findings from investigating
mass graves of Kurdish people from
northern Iraq, who were put to death following
alleged insurrection
there.
The defendants,
including Hussein,
questioned Trimble for
an hour.
The defendants had
long stated these were
legitimate operations of
a government defending
itself against internal
insurrection.
Information from the
studies of Trimble’s
group firmly contradicted those claims.
Detailed evidence, including the chilling
fact that 60 percent of the bodies
exhumed were of children under the age
of 12, demonstrated the untruths of the
defense’s position.
Trimble said his final goal is to have
the remains of the exhumed returned to
their families.
Army Substance Abuse Program
“Is it not the Army’s primary objective
to restore individuals to full productive
performance?”
This question will be posed to Basic
Combat Training and Advanced
Individual Training Soldiers after receiving
notification of testing positive on a
urinalysis test.
In accordance with Army
Regulation 600-85, Army
Substance Abuse
Program, drug abuse will
not be tolerated and
there are serious consequences
for such misbehavior.
AR 600-85 doesn’t
mandate discharge.
However, Soldiers, including
Army National Guard and Reserve,
who are identified as drug abusers, without
exception will:
º Be referred to the Army Substance
Abuse Program counseling center for
screening.
º Be considered for disciplinary action
under the UCMJ, as appropriate.
º Be processed for administrative separation
in accordance with Army
Regulation 600-8-24 (for officers and
warrant officers) and Army Regulation
635-200 (for enlisted personnel).
Army Regulation 600-85 states that
one of the objectives of the Army
Substance Abuse Program is to “restore
to duty those substance-impaired Soldiers
who have the potential for continued military
service.”
One of the Army’s principles is that
the abuse of alcohol or illicit drugs by
both military and civilian personnel is
inconsistent with Army values as well
as the standards of performance,
discipline and readiness
necessary to accomplish
this mission.
The separation action
will be initiated and
processed through the
chain of command,
which will exercise discretion
on a case-by-case
basis in directing retention
or discharge of the Soldier.
Every year commanding officers
give BCT and AIT Soldiers going home
for Block Leave this safety briefing:
“Soldiers, you will be tested upon your
return. If you test positive, you can expect
negative personnel actions to be taken
against you. You may be convicted of a
felony, and you ultimately could be discharged.”
When Soldier readiness cannot
happen because of substance abuse, lives
are immediately put in jeopardy.
The standing order not to use illegal
drugs is issued by Army leadership with
Soldier safety in mind.
The Soldier was arrested based upon
As a result of the accident, the vehicle
person(s) removed two bicycles from the
Soldier’s back porch.
The items were left unsecured and
unattended. The estimated cost of loss
was $199. If you have any information,
Leadership
Chaplain (Maj.) Mark Moss
369th Adjutant General Battalion
Everybody in the Army is a leader in
some capacity. You may be a noncommissioned
officer or an officer who leads by
a position of authority. But leadership
isn’t just defined by job status. Parents
are leaders, and so is a private who leads
by example. Almost without exception,
we are all leaders in some capacity or role
that we fill.
One of the biggest jobs as leaders is to
develop ourselves as worthy of the
respect of the Soldiers we serve, train and
lead. H. Gordon Selfridge, who built one
of the world’s largest department stores in
London, shares advice on the subject. He
claims that his success was built by being
a leader and not a boss. Here is his comparison
of the two types of mentalities:
The boss drives his people; the leader
coaches them. The boss depends on
authority; the leader on good will. The
boss inspires fear; the leader inspires
enthusiasm. The boss says “I”; the leader,
“we.” The boss fixes the blame for the
breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.
The boss knows how it is done; the
leader shows how. The boss says “Go”;
the leader says “Let’s go!”
— Sunshine Magazine
A leader takes care of those in his
charge and doesn’t just let things happen.
He doesn’t defer to the wisdom of not
getting involved because it isn’t his lane.
He doesn’t avoid hard decisions or taking
sides because he dislikes conflict and the
messy nature of interpersonal relationships.
He doesn’t let his personal feelings
or perceived injuries to himself affect his
impartiality and judgment. Perhaps the
wisdom contained in Selfridge’s advice is
epitomized in these words of the Bible
about servanthood;
You know that the rulers of the
Gentiles lord it over them, and their high
officials exercise authority over them. Not
so with you. Instead, whoever wants to
become great among you must be your
servant, and whoever wants to be first
must be your slave — Matthew 20:25-27
Inspiration for this model of leadership
can be seen in Jesus’ words and actions
as a leader. Jesus said, “Greater love has
no one than this: that he lay down his life
for his friends.”
This was followed by the action of
Jesus dying for the sins of the world. The
Apostle Paul says of Jesus in Philippians
2: ... in humility consider others better
than yourselves ... look also to the interests
of others. Your attitude should be the
same as Christ Jesus: Who being in the
vary nature of God, did not consider
equality with God something to be
grasped ... And being found in the
appearance of man, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death even on a
cross.
This is the divine example and bench-
