Vain and egotistical, supple and proud – these 

are some of the characteristics of the libertine 

personality discerned by Honoré de Balzac, 

writing forty years on from the publication of Les 

Liaisons dangereuses in 1782. Choderlos de 

Laclos’s novel depicts the progress and destructive 

consequences of a revenge plotted by two of 

literature’s most magnetic aristocratic libertines, the 

dominating Marquise de Merteuil, a widow, and the 

predatory Vicomte de Valmont. 

They were, we learn, formerly lovers. Undeceived, 

and unrestrained, by any of the moral prescriptions 

of society, yet superbly adept at society’s most 

essential accomplishment, suave hypocrisy, they 

are seasoned experts in the arts of seduction. As 

self-conscious and self-congratulatory hypocrites, 

they readily manipulate the instinctive but artless 

hypocrites who are their prey, as if it were a sport 

or game of cards. Herein lies the attraction – a 

dangerous attraction – for readers of the novel 

and audiences of the play. Christopher Hampton’s 

brilliant stage adaptation never lets the spectator 

off this hook. The artistry of vice compels our 

attention and, in some troubling measure, our 

admiration. 

Laclos’s epistolary novel – almost the last hurrah 

of an enormously popular genre that flourished 

in eighteenth-century Europe – purports to 

mirror the depravities of a recent, unspecified 

past. Publication of the letters, we are told, was 

delayed until the death of Mme de Rosemonde, 

the oldest character. Another note by the “Editor” 

(in reality Laclos himself masquerading as 

impartial interpreter), who sets out to guide the

eader’s response, asserts the impossibility that 

people of such evil mores could have lived in the 

philosophical enlightenment of the current age, 

which, as everyone knows, has made all men 

honest and all women modest and reserved. This 

Swiftian irony, implying that licentiousness and 

deceit are, in fact, perennials, flavours a work 

destined for controversy. Hampton’s play sets the 

action in an autumn and winter in the 1780s. The 

direct encounters of characters on stage, in place 

of descriptions of actions in letters, intensifies its 

here-and-now immediacy. 

Happily for Laclos, whose career as an artillery 

officer and fortification expert was making no 

progress and whose literary work was judged 

mediocre, or worse (his comic opera Ernestine, at 

whose opening the ill-fated queen Marie Antoinette 

was present, was booed off the stage at its sole 

performance), his novel was pronounced in the 

literary press a “dazzling success.” But other 

voices condemned it. One contemporary, although 

admiring the artistry, judged it as “very black, 

a veritable pack of horrors and infamy.” Simply 

reading the novel was, according to several critics, 

dangerous for young people. A strikingly contrary 

view was expressed by the Bishop of Pavia, who 

told Laclos that “the work is very moral and very 

good to give to others to read, especially young 

women.” 

Laclos’s military superiors took an unenthusiastic 

view of their comrade’s work. He was recalled to 

boring, routine duty. Yet it was probably not only 

moral outrage that animated Laclos’s commanders. 

More offensive was his pamphlet criticizing the 

French military hero and master of fortification, 

Vauban. Likewise, during the Revolution, when 

Laclos put his literary talents at the service of 

a losing faction (that of the Duc D’Orleans) and 

was imprisoned on orders from Robespierre and 

threatened with the guillotine, his novel was of no 

special account. If it was, as some have thought, a 

satirical attack on the ancien régime, that conferred 

no benefit. His eventual promotion to the rank of 

general in Napoleon’s Revolutionary Army probably 

resulted from his professional expertise (he 

invented a new form of shell used by the navy) and 

lengthy service rather than political zeal, although 

he wrote an essay justifying continual war on 

France’s enemies. 

Attempts to understand Laclos and his one 

literary masterpiece – especially his relationship to

its characters and his intentions (was he a moralist 

or a cynic, or, as has been claimed, a nihilist) – 

have given rise to the “enigma of Laclos.” The 

numerous adaptations of the novel for the stage 

and the screen reveal a range of interpretations. An 

appetite for portrayals of libertine behaviour and 

its extreme manifestations in the sexual pathology 

of such figures as the Earl of Rochester and the 

Marquis de Sade has helped to keep Dangerous 

Liaisons in demand. But our uncertainty about 

just what Valmont and Merteuil, and to a lesser 

degree most of the other characters, are really up 

to – other than manipulation – is the spice of great 

theatre. In particular, the questions of whether 

Valmont really falls in love with Mme de Tourvel, 

whether Merteuil loves or did love Valmont and 

whether he mistakenly overplays his hand are at 

the heart of the mystery that resists being plucked out. 

Put this way, they sound like banal questions one 

might ask of a soap opera. But set in counterpoint 

to the libertine’s rejection of sentimentality and 

demeaning emotional commitment, they mark 

stages in a deadly serious war of the sexes waged 

by contestants who prize control of others above all 

else. “You’ll find the shame is like the pain: you only 

feel it once,” Merteuil tells Cécile, who, as Merteuil 

intended, has just lost her virginity to Valmont: “you 

can do it, or not, with as many men as you like. . . . 

Our sex has few enough advantages.” Merteuil’s 

brutally candid instruction of Cécile (who proves 

to be an apt pupil) which concludes, “remember 

what I’ve said and, above all, no more snivelling,” 

anticipates aspects of Laclos’s unfinished essay on 

the education of women. His views underpin the 

character of Merteuil, and arguably of other women 

in the play. Women learn to use desire as a weapon 

against their enslavement in society. As Balzac 

describes libertines, they know how to compromise 

others by a glance or a nudge. 

As collaborators in revenge, Valmont and Merteuil 

forensically dissect the success of the scenes 

they stage for each other. They correct each 

other’s lapses in the code of libertinism, treating 

erotic desire as a mannered game. They know the 

meanings of actions that others misinterpret, such 

as Valmont’s seeming act of charity toward a poor 

family. Understood by virtuous Mme de Tourvel 

as magnanimity, it is, as we know, a prelude to his 

assault. Thus the play is infused with dramatic irony 

and savage humour: we share the conspirators’ 

knowledge of their intentions, which other 

characters, blinded by their own presuppositions, 

are unable to recognize. This is rich comedy, often

presented in witty epigrammatic style. But they also 

know that their conspiracy is rivalry. Inevitably, they 

must confront each other. 

At the climax of their relationship, Valmont, 

claiming his reward, is told “to adopt a less marital 

tone of voice,” for, as Merteuil says, she was 

determined “never again to be ordered around.” 

She flaunts her superiority: “Remember I’m better at 

this than you are.” Valmont must accept this, but “It’s 

always the best swimmers who drown.” Baudelaire, 

commenting on the novel, remarked on all that 

strategy to win a “frivolous prize.” Is it enough to 

have played the game Dangerous Liaisons leaves 

us in radical doubt about our alternatives.

Christopher Hampton 

Playwright 

Christopher Hampton was born in Portugal to 

British parents. His father, an engineer, was posted 

to various overseas locations, so Hampton lived 

in Aden, Egypt and Zanzibar before beginning 

boarding school in England at age 13. 

While at Oxford, where he studied French and 

German, he became interested in the theatre and 

had his play When Did You Last See My Mother 

produced by the Oxford University Dramatic 

Society. He sent the play to an agent who passed 

it on to the Artistic Director of the Royal Court 

Theatre, where it was produced in 1966. That 

production transferred to London’s West End, 

making Hampton the youngest playwright to have 

a play staged there in modern times. 

After his graduation from Oxford in 1968, he 

became the Royal Court Theatre’s resident 

dramatist. His other plays include Total Eclipse 

(1968), The Philanthropist (1970), Savages (1974), 

Treats (1976), Tales from Hollywood (1984), White 

Chameleon (1991) and The Talking Cure (2002). 

He has translated the plays A Doll’s House, Tales 

from the Vienna Woods and Tartuffe for screen 

adaptations and translated several of the plays of 

Yasmina Reza, including Art, for the stage. 

His play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, an 

adaptation of the novel of the same name by 

Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos, 

premièred at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 

1985. Here at Stratford, the play is being presented 

under the same English title, Dangerous Liaisons, 

that was used for the 1988 film version, for which 

Hampton wrote the screenplay and for which he 

won an Academy Award. He was nominated for 

the same award for his screenplay for Atonement 

(2007), based on the novel by Ian McEwan. 

The Story 

Former lovers le Vicomte de Valmont and la 

Marquise de Merteuil maintain an alliance, 

amusing each other by comparing notes on 

their various sexual conquests. 

To avenge herself on a lover who deserted 

her, Merteuil asks Valmont to seduce the 

man’s fiancée, the virginal Cécile Volanges. 

Valmont declines, saying the task is beneath 

him; besides, he is already preoccupied 

with the seduction of a respectable married 

woman, Mme de Tourvel. Valmont, however, 

is also interested in renewing his sexual 

relationship with Merteuil; she suggests to him 

that she will consider this if he provides her 

with written proof of his success with Tourvel. 

While assiduously pursuing Tourvel, Valmont 

decides to undertake the seduction of Cécile 

as well, thus setting in motion a train of events 

that will have unforeseen and disastrous 

consequences.

It’s About Love 

Notes from a conversation with director 

Ethan McSweeny

I must confess a slight aversion to director’s notes, 

which, like so many things, I suppose, originates 

in an adolescent trauma: in high school I had a 

wonderful theatre teacher who, when confronted 

by a baroque explanation of an obtuse acting 

choice, would lower her spectacles and say, in a 

withering tone, “Well, we’ll just have to put a note in 

the program about that!” 

In any case, a substantial portion of directing boils 

down to creative problem solving, and the Festival 

Theatre’s unique space presents some particular 

challenges to staging a work set in a series of 

salons and bedchambers – how to create these 

interiors on a thrust stage while preserving the 

fluid, cinematic pace of the action In raw, practical 

terms, how does one get the Marquise onstage in 

the middle of a card game, say Or Valmont in the 

midst of an amorous encounter 

The decadent aristocracy of Liaisons play their 

games of love and chance poised on the edge of 

an abyss that they don’t see coming, when their 

teetering, untenable ancien régime will finally 

succumb to the Revolution. In the 1980s, when 

Christopher Hampton wrote the play, there were 

wonderful parallels to be drawn between the greed 

and excess of that seminal decade and the greed and 

excess of the 1780s, when the play is set. Interestingly, 

as we approach the story in 2010, the gap between 

rich and poor has, if anything, increased. 

Eventually, designer Santo Loquasto and I located 

an artistic answer to the practical staging problem 

within the social fabric of the play: corroded by 

boredom and numbed by surfeit, these aristocrats 

have lost the ability to do anything for themselves 

and rely on their servants to dress them, to 

feed them and even to literally push them on 

and off the stage. You might observe the casual 

disregard shown the Third Estate, or the careless 

consumption of luxurious foods by a people so 

myopically self-absorbed that they are blind to the 

starvation going on around them. I half believe that 

it is these same servants who, having witnessed the 

moral dissolution of their masters, will rise up to rid 

themselves of a society that has rotted from within. 

As my own ideas about the play continue to 

evolve, I am increasingly aware that beyond the 

politics of class and gender, Liaisons is really all 

about love. Listen for the number of times and 

the variety of ways the word love is batted about 

and how it is compared and contrasted with its 

corollaries happiness (usually meaning spiritual 

contentment) and pleasure (19th-century code for sex). 

“Love,” says the Marquise de Merteuil, is a tool, 

a “lubricant to nature,” and it cannot coexist with 

happiness or pleasure without the presence 

of deceit. “Those who are most worthy of it,” 

contributes Mme de Rosemonde, “are never made 

happy by it.” 

How and when do we know we are in love What 

does it take to believe someone else To believe 

ourselves When does it give us pleasure Or make 

us happy While we thrill to the wilful venality of 

Valmont and Merteuil and revel in their exposure 

of the ever-present social hypocrisies surrounding 

men and women, their story would not have 

endured for more than two centuries in novels, films 

and plays if it didn’t concern itself with a subject 

central to our common experience: love and the 

lies we tell in its pursuit. 

The gap between the servants and their 

increasingly helpless masters haunts the periphery 

of the play and points toward its inevitable 

conclusion. Yet though our protagonists and 

antagonists merrily fiddle on the cusp of their own 

demise, we love them for their human struggles all 

the same.

Thirty-one members of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s 2010 company have come out of our 

professional training program, now known as the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre. 

Founded in 1998, the Conservatory has helped to launch the careers of some of our leading young 

actors, many of whom we have had the great pleasure of directing. Providing opportunities for young 

Canadian artists is part of our mission at the Festival, and we hope you will find it as satisfying as we

Todd Campbell 

Second season: Fight director of King of Thieves and Dangerous Liaisons. 

Elsewhere: Todd is a certified fight director with Fight Directors Canada 

and a founding member of the award winning Riot ACT stunt team. He has 

arranged fights for the Tempest Theatre Group, Theatre in Port, the Sudbury 

Theatre Centre, Repercussion Theatre, the American Renaissance Theatre, 

Birdland Theatre, Absit Omen Theatre, Kawartha Lakes Summer Playhouse, 

Driftwood Theatre, Tribal Productions and Resurgence Theatre, to name a few. In 2007 

Todd produced and directed the hit Fringe show Duel of Ages with his production company, 

True Edge Productions. He also teaches stage combat at the Randolph Academy for the

Maggie has been production stage manager at the Avon and Festival 

theatres for 18 seasons. Stage-management credits include Will Power, 

Henry IV (parts 1 and 2), Iolanthe, The Imaginary Invalid, My Fair Lady, A Man 

for All Seasons, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls, The Government Inspector, 

Coriolanus, The Mikado (national tour, London’s Old Vic) and Twelfth Night 

(U.S. tour). Elsewhere: Maggie apprenticed at Neptune Theatre (1966/67) and worked 

at the St. Lawrence Centre (Toronto Arts Productions), MTC and the Grand Theatre. She 

stage-managed Eugene Onegin (Manitoba Opera), the first Dream in High Park and the first 

Dora Awards. She was publicity director for the NDWT Company, worked for Fountainhead
